  • "Had a great week on Dartmoor."

We have stayed in the farmhouse about 20 years ago. It hasn't changed. The kitchen needs an oven/hob that caters for 9 people. The 4 ring hob and 1.5 oven is not adequate. The bathroom facilities could also be improved. The owners were attentive and friendly and delivered more firewood when we requested it, but be ... Continue reading

  • "Lovely big farmhouse, situated on the edge of Dartmoor!"

Location was great, situated on a working farm. Staying just before Christmas it was muddy but we're used to that with 3 dogs and we came prepared. Location was great, situated on a working farm. Staying just before Christmas it was muddy but we're used to that with 3 dogs and we came prepared. We could use an enclosed field nearby(one without sheep in it) and the dogs had the time of their lives! The farmhouse is unique in having a traditional dining room but very modern ktichen. Very very spacious, I got lost between rooms and doors at first :) One or two glitches with radiators not working, remote for TV not working etc but owners sorted straight away. Perhaps leave a radiator key handy, as my partner willingly would have 'bled' the relevant radiators? Loved watching the farmer/owner do his work around the farmhouse but sympathised with his 15 hour day! Grandchildren appreciated a bedroom each and the brownies which were eaten straight away, Everything was beautifully clean. Thank you for the stay-we will be back!

  • "The Farmhouse was gorgeous and there was space for us all without feeling on top of each other the pool was a massive hit."

The famer and his wife made us so welcome. The walks, the views, seeing the animals, the lovely gardens, it really was a fabulous holiday. Thank you.

The games room is a real bonus for a wet cold week in Devon! The only thing I would say didn’t meet expectation was the lack of an enclosed garden. The games room is a real bonus for a wet cold week in Devon! The only thing I would say didn’t meet expectation was the lack of an enclosed garden. For some the partial enclosed garden across the yard would be ok but we have one reactive dog so having the farm dogs (albeit friendly farm dogs) wondering around by the back door with no enclosed safe space was stressful. Mr Cunningham was very friendly (without being intrusive) and let us know which fields had cattle/sheep and which ones we were free to wonder so there was plenty of space just not enclosed garden which was disappointing.

.. only negative was the room with the bunk beds in smelt like urine ... one of the beds was damp and I think a child staying previously had wet the bed .... it was also a struggle to sleep 8 Adults we took an air bed as we were aware of the bed situation and was glad we did because of the damp bed .... I would say it sleeps ... Continue reading

  • "The Farmhouse was well equipped and had great facilities all round."

Beautiful quiet location ideal for touring Devon and Cornwall. The owners were amazing and nothing was too much trouble. Definitely a place to book again for a perfect family holiday.

A problem with the shower was resolved promptly by the owner with minimal disruption to our holiday. There was just one point I would like to make - the main description of the house does not make it clear that the pool is shared with other properties. Given the current covid situation a rota was in place for pool usage which allocated 1.5hours per day for its use to each property. Looking at the description of other properties on the farm, the shared nature of this facility is much clearer. I would highly recommend that the description is amended to bring "the Farmhouse" in line with "The Red barn" and "the Coach House".

Burnville Farm Cottages

2 miles south-west of Lydford and 1 from its gorge, 400 yards of private farm-lane end at Burnville Farm, a lovely farmstead. It is on the side of a shallow stream-valley with supreme views of Dartmoor hills and tors and to Brentor’s peak-top church, from almost anywhere on the 250 acre working farm (direct moor access from it). There are sheep, cattle, ponies, pigs, chickens, ornamental pheasants. You can roam the farm and help is most welcome. Pond (picnicking) with mallard, moorhen and usually Canada geese in spring; badgers and foxes about. Stabling/grazing for your own ponies/horses. Clay pigeon shooting and instruction, archery tuition (equipment provided) and mountain bikes (adults’ and children’s) by arrangement. Fenced outdoor heated swimming pool (32' x 16' and 3'6" to 8' deep, available 25 May to 15 September) and hard tennis court shared with owners. Fun badminton and volleyball. Games room (6' pool table, table tennis, skittle alley) and well-equipped gym in a refurbished barn. Lovely walled vegetable garden; fresh veg available in season, and eggs. Spring water. Professional catering available and meals in the owners' house. Golf and gliding, 2 miles. For you to stay in are The Farmhouse, The Coach House about 100 yards up the private lane, or The Red Barn a mile away. The owners live nearby but out of sight and do B&B in their own house a mile away by car or a 10 minute walk across Burnville Farm, is The Red Barn, surrounded by its own enclosed garden with terrace (barbecue) at the back and splendid long views over farmland to the moor.

The property

The Farmhouse is one of the three lovely holiday homes on Burnville Farm, looking like it came from a child's picture book.

It is big and old and stands on the edge of the traditional Devon farmyard.

Leave your boots in the hall and head through to the comfy sitting room with its traditional beams, off which is a bright sun room for fine days.

The kitchen is well equipped for preparing meals to enjoy around the big sociable table beside the open fire in the dining room, where fascinatingly the table is an ancient dough trough.

The four comfortable bedrooms are all upstairs, peaceful places to sleep well after busy days exploring the area and enjoying the farm amenities.

Outside, you will find your own big enclosed pretty garden with lawn, trees, stream and barbecue 20 yards from the house.

Beyond this, there is as much freedom and fun as you could wish for.

You are welcome to wander the 250 acre farm and help when possible, picnic beside the pond, swim in the shared seasonal outdoor swimming pool, play tennis and use the shared games room and gym.

Maybe arrange with the friendly owners to try clay pigeon shooting and archery or hire mountain bikes and head out over the open moorland which surrounds the farm or on the Granite Way cycle trail (small extra charges may apply).

This is brilliant walking country too, or if you have horses you can bring them and ride since stabling and grazing are available.

Golf and gliding can be arranged nearby and Roadford Lake is excellent for water sports.

With so many activities available, yet in such a peaceful spot, The Farmhouse is an ideal location for a fabulous family break.
