  • "Overall the property was as expected and suitable for our needs."

The central heating kept the cottage cosy and the lounge and kitchen are spacious and well equipped. We did find the oven and hob to be quite difficult to operate. The old fashioned solid rings are slow to respond but we got used to them. Maybe something to consider for upgrading? The cottage is well positioned for walks straight from the door or more widely across the east of Dartmoor.

The host had provided a range of goodies for us to enjoy which was fantastic! They had even provided some Xmas essentials like a roasting tin and table cloth with napkins etc. - it was such a nice touch! We have stayed there before so knew what to expect with the accommodation - it didn't disappoint - we felt so much at home! Would definitely recommend and will be returning :)

  • "We have stayed here before, so knew it was lovely."

Only two observations, internet & wifi are weak, not the owners issue obviously , it’s the area. We can all do without being online for a while, but unfortunately most trips out involve booking online, so that can be tricky. Also a few more coffee cups would be handy, as you need at least 12 when you have 4-6 people using them and then trying to only use the dishwasher once a day. These small issues certainly did not impact our enjoyment though. It’s a lovely cottage.

  • "A very well appointed and comfortable cottage situated close to the Dartmoor National Park boundary."

The cottage is found at the end of a quiet country lane and is very peaceful and relaxing as a result. There are great views and walks immediately from the door and the park proper is easily reached from here by car. The nearest shops are in the town of Bovey Tracey. There is a well stocked Co-op and a Tesco Express here but you may want to find a larger supermarket en route if you are completely self catering or if you have specific dietary needs. There is a pub nearby called the Kestor Inn which we didn't try but gets good reviews as well as a few Asian restaurants back in Bovey. The kitchen has everything you need to cook and washer and dryer available if you need to clean clothing. The beds are very comfortable and these rooms are on the ground floor. There are a few steps so this needs to be borne in mind if you have mobility issues. There is also a lovely sheltered garden area to the side of the property. Great when the sun was out to sit and listen to the birds or at night to view the stars. There was a small issue with the wifi at the start of the trip but this was quickly resolved and bear in mind, mobile reception appears limited here. That said, would highly recommend this cottage.

  • "Beautiful little cottage set in an idyllic part of Devon."

When we arrived we were very pleased to see how clean everything was and that the littlest things had been considered; including bread, milk, butter, jam, marmalade, and jammy wagon-wheels waiting for us. The kitchen had everything we needed, including some washing liquid, dishwasher tablets, and laundry detergent. On the Monday we were even provided with a tall standing fan to help stave off the brunt of the British summertime. Hand delivered in the morning by our host. My only negative was that there was a definite issue with damp in the bedrooms. But I guess this is to be expected in a cottage such as this. All in all, the five of us thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Thank you!

  • "Four of us (two adults, 8 year old, 10 year old) visited."

We are regular visitors to Devon due to family links, so are fairly seasoned in the Dartmoor way of life. There were no nasty surprises to greet us when we arrived. Yes, it's on a farm, but it's safe what with barely any agricultural vehicles on site. There aren't any animals on site, for those who were wondering. The house is upside-down, but that makes for lovely views of Manaton rocks from the lounge and kitchen. The upstairs (living area) is well-insulated, never getting cold. The downstairs is cooler. The kitchen is well-stocked and the hosts left the necessary bits and pieces for our arrival. For the observant prospective customer, there is a Tassimo machine, but there are no pods, so make sure to bring some yourself, if you're that way inclined. The upstairs is very roomy and at no point did we feel on top of eachother. The WiFi coverage, for those who rely on their phones, is very good. 4G and phone coverage is non-existent however, but a landline phone is provided to receive incoming calls. There had been an advert on another site advertising the fact that there was a bath, but there was a shower only. This is a power shower which provides hot water immediately, which is good for a Dartmoor property. There is a little outside area where the bench catches the sun during most of the other day. This is on the outskirts of the hamlet of Manaton. There are numerous fields containing sheep (and lambs!) and cattle. Manaton is around 10-15 minutes away from the small town of Bovey Tracey, which is worth a visit for a leisurely trip to the cafes/bakeries/restaurants and the park by the river. The kooky House Of Marbles is also in Bovey Tracey and is free admission. If you have children, you will undoubtedly come home with a bag of marbles from the well-priced gift shop. Moretonhampstead is further afield where there are two places of note - The Miniature Pony Centre (a family favourite, well worth visiting if you like Horses and Ponies) and Berto's (a truly authentic Italian restaurant, but be sure to book up. It's a gem of a place with reasonably-priced, but lovely Pizzas and Pastas). It ought to be mentioned that Wingstone Farm Cottage is located well into the countryside and as such, one has to navigate the narrow roads typical of Dartmoor. This was not an issue for us, but just consider this if you are particularly precious about your Chelsea tractor having the hedges brushing up against your metallic paperwork. In summary, this really provided a typically Dartmoor, quiet and lovely place for us to wind down from our respective hectic work and school commitments.

Whilst the fridge provided was small, the owner had taken on board previous feedback and was very apologetic They had ordered a new one which arrived during our stay. The barbecue was great and looked new or otherwise was very clean with a nice secluded outdoor space to use. The owners were very nice and accommodating allowing us to walk our dog in an adjacent field they own. The was a new toilet upstairs which was handy. We can suggest putting a small lock on the door as an improvement.. The kitchen was upstairs and quite well equipped with things you would expect. A mixing bowl would be a helpful addition. It was really good to have a welcome pack including milk as there are no shops nearby The lounge was comfortable and well laid out. Due to COVID restrictions we were told there were no dvds or games so we brought our own. There was a great little rechargeable fan which we made use of in the hot weather. Towels and bedding were provided and there was a clothing rack beneath the stairs and pegs in the kitchen to use.

It had everything we needed and was furnished to a really high standard. I spoke to the owner before we arrived as the self-catering industry had only just reopened after the lockdown and we were all a bit nervous. When we arrived the cottage was absolutely spotless and had obviously been thoroughly cleaned so we felt perfectly safe. We never met the owners in person but they did drop off a local map and some walks which were really helpful. It was so lovely to get away to wide open spaces after being cooped up for months and the moors were beautiful. Wish we could have stayed longer as a week wasn't enough.

BOVEY TRACEY

Newton Abbott 6.5 miles; Teigmouth 10 miles; Exeter 15 miles

Nestled in the valley of the River Bovey is this stunning little town known as "The Gateway to the Moor". Bovey Tracey got its name from the meandering river that flows through it, with 'Tracey' representing the family that were the lords of the manor after the Norman Conquest. It has a great history with heavy involvement in the English Civil War which resulted in the name of the town's pub "The Cromwell Arms" which serves real ale and good food. The history of the town can be discovered in the Heritage Centre, with the Dartmoor National Park Authority also nearby. Bovey Tracey offers a selection of shops and cafés along with the stunning Mill Marsh Park and the Dartmoor Whisky Distillery which offers guided tours. The town comes just outside of the Dartmoor National Park which provides seemingly endless walking and cycling paths along with incredible scenery. The market town of Newton Abbot sits nearby, offering a fantastic day out with charming buildings and a good range of amenities. The beautiful city of Exeter is also within driving distance, and if a day at the seaside is what you're after then take a trip to Teignmouth.
