  • "Barley cottage was a great place to stay, the cottage had everything you need to settle in quickly so nothing to rush out and buy as the cottage had it all, the BBQ hut in the garden was a great addition that I’ve not seen before, really great to see that the owners have gone the extra mile to make sure anyone that stays there has a great experience."

  • "Beautiful cottage."

    Lovingly maintained. In a very convenient location for Lyme Regis, Seaton and Sidmouth, Dorset and East Devon coast. Would return BUT While we were there (14th to 21st August) the property was covered in tiny flies. One evening, the flies entered one bedroom. We literally had to remove them by hoovering them up. We couldn’t manage to remove all of them and the bedroom could not be used. We managed to remove the remainder the following morning. I phoned the help line but operative took notes but wasn’t particularly sympathetic. The following evening after dark we momentarily opened the front door only to find hundreds of flies entering the property. Again we spent a considerable amount of time hoovering them up. At that point we decided to leave on the Thursday instead of the Friday, Again I rang the help line, as I was concerned that any new holidaymakers would encounter the same problem. IN THE CIRCUMSTANCES I WOULD EXPECT SOME SORT OF RESPONSE AND AN APOLOGY FROM SYKES COTTAGES. I AM AFRAID WITH OUR EXPERIENCE OF SYKES COTTAGES, I WILL NOT BE USING THEM AGAIN. I NEED TO REPEAT THAT BARLEY COTTAGE IS A LOVELY PROPERTY AND THE SITUATION WAS PROBABLY CAUSED BY UNUSUAL WEATHER CONDITIONS. O

  • "We really enjoyed our stay at this house."

    It had everything we needed. The owners haven’t scrimped on quality. Everything is solid and works. Our neighbours were friendly and welcoming. (the other houses are residential) The garden is huge and well maintained. The shared driveway separating house and garden isn’t a problem if you take care with kids and dogs. The stream at the bottom of the garden is a lovely bonus. We had a couple of barbecues in the brilliant hut. This is a perfect location for exploring Devon and Dorset. We would like to return some time.

  • "Barley cottage, is everything and more the garden, BQ."

    Grest. so quite and peaceful. We will be back and recommend it to others. ( the only thing I have to say is the TV in the lounge needs replacing. Pictures quality bad and sometimes unable to watch. if you have a wet evening i would like to watch a film) .

  • "Barley cottage is amazing and the pictures don't do it justice."

    The cottage itself was very clean on arrival and the welcome hamper was lovely to. The garden and BBQ hut are amazing and we definitely made the best of them. The only slight down fall is the beds and the settees, they could do with replacing. But other than that, lovely cottage and we had a great time.

  • "Barley cottage is a very comfy homely base for your holiday."

    We found it very well equipped, better than most rentals. The cottage is in a small development of an old mill so there are neighbours and the garden is not actually attached to the house but we didn’t find this a problem. A lovely welcome hamper and note from the owners was a very thoughtful touch. I would highly recommend this spotless cosy cottage. We left a pair of good wellies there so are hoping we can get them back. Thank you Lisa and family

  • "Best welcome pack ever, really enjoyable bbq hut (we managed to top up our charcoal supplies at Tesco even though it was December too)."

    Very clear recycling instructions, which some properties don't provide. The only downsides were the beds and sofas. Springs could be felt on one of the single beds, and the main double felt like it had a hump in the middle which made us afraid we would roll out in the night

    Comfortable and everything you could wish for in the home. A welcome basket was a lovely surprise. As ex-South Africans we loved the BBQ room. Definitely one of the best cottages we've stayed in. Thank you.

  • "The property itself was a home from home."

    Everything provided that you could want. The only thing I would mention is that the fabulous garden is not attached to the property. It is across a small pathway/road. You cannot change this but people need to be aware with children and dogs that they just cannot open the garden doors and let them out in the garden on their own.

  • "A lovely fortnight spent in a beautiful house."

    We had everything we needed and the house was very clean and well spec’d. Barbecue hut was good fun! House was well positioned for exploring Dorset & Devon with good access (by car) to supermarkets a couple of miles away or a 15 minute footpath walk into Axminster town centre for cafes and restaurants.

  • "Lovely property, very comfortable and well-maintained."

    Great location, wonderful garden. One suggestion for improvement would be providing clearer instructions for managing the boiler. We couldn't find any information in the user manual, and it took us some time to get hot water in the radiators throughout the house (this Easter was quite chilly). Otherwise, we had a very enjoyable stay.

  • "A lovely cottage in a great location for visiting the Dorset coast."

    The house was very clean and had everything that we needed. The garden is lovely and would be amazing to sit out in the summer (we visited in February). Really comfy beds too.

  • "A warm, welcoming and cosy cottage in a really well connected area."

    The cottage and garden are very well looked after. The garden has an amazing bbq hut, which we didn't have time to use, but next time... I have only marked down the accuracy of listing because the way garden is photographed and mentioned doesn't fully explain the reality. The garden is separated from the house by the public driveway that gives access to the other houses. While on the surface this doesn't seem an issue, if you have a dog you can't just open a door and let it out into the garden. You need to leave the house, cross the driveway, unlock the gate and then you are in. Unfortunately for us it was pouring with rain, so it just made it a little more of hassle than ideally you would want. Not a deal breaker, just good to be aware.

  • "A truly superb, relaxing holiday in an amazing cottage."

    The 'welcome' hamper on the table was a lovely surprise and we enjoyed cooking eggs and bacon in the very well-equipped kitchen. The cottage is well located for Charmouth, Lyme Regis, River Cottage Headquarters and more! Miller's Farm shop is full of great produce, ideal for cooking in the BBQ hut which is another great experience at Barley Cottage.

  • "The property was perfect, the only complaint I have was there are 3 washbowls in the property and not one of the plugs any good, two of them wasn’t working properly and one hadn’t even got a plug at all, just an open drain."

  • "We were happy with the property and it was clean and as described."

    Feedback is only helpful if it can improve others experience, so I will mention the following. We saw a reference by someone else who stayed about a welcome hamper. Just to be sure, we checked with yourselves and had an email back from Michaela-Jayne on 18th April that this was the case "owner does supply a hamper" We appreciate it is at the discretion of the owner but as we arrived late on a Sunday afternoon when shops were shut, we were disappointed at what we found. The hamper consisted of a pint of milk and a lemon drizzle cake. I hope you would agree that this was hardly welcoming. We left all sorts of basics at home like bread and butter etc. It did spoil our first day.

  • "A beautiful holiday cottage, plenty of space and good surroundings."

    There was a fab welcome pack which was a lovely touch. What was so good and helpful was that everything was set up, ready to use (things like bins and lots of spare bin bags, tea, coffee, sugar etc) which made it so easy to just arrive and get cracking, esp with two young children. If you weren't aware, the upstairs bathroom cold tap doesn't work and therefore running a bath for the kids had to be done through the shower (as the hot tap was scolding hot v v quickly), or we used a jug to tip cold into for speed. The BBQ lodge was a lovely alternative place to hang out and the children loved the ducks on the stream. Was a lovely week, a well set up and appointed cottage. Perfect, thank you.
