“The cottage is comfortable and spacious.”

Although there is no central heating, the gas fire in the lounge is very effective and makes for a pleasantly warm property, even in the cold weather which we encountered. The kitchen is well-equipped and practical. Tea, coffee, sugar, milk and a nice cake were kindly provided. The location is very quiet and we slept well in the wide bed. An electric heater was provided for the bedroom but we never found the need for it as the small heater on the nearby hall wall provides adequate warmth and the duvet is a heavy, warm one. The shower is excellent: consistently hot and powerful. WiFi worked well, was reasonably fast and never dropped the connection. The only minor issues were that the DVD player and the heated towel rail didn’t work and the toaster seemed to be faulty in that, even on its minimum setting, the toast was burnt on the first occasion; after that, we left bread in only a very short time and it was toasted right. The well-sheltered veranda faces south and, surprisingly, on a sunny, calm day we found it warm enough to sit outside without coats around lunchtime. We had lunch at the Church House Inn and Ye Olde Smokey House, both within easy walking distance and both excellent. The former is more sophisticated and expensive whereas the latter offers large portions and good value. There are plenty of walking opportunities on quiet lanes and footpaths and we never used the car. Paignton is an easy walk down but it’s a long climb back! The walk to Cockington village via Scadson Woods is very pleasant. In short we had a very pleasant time and were lucky with the weather; we would recommend the property.
