  • “I cannot praise Seacombe cottage enough but will try and describe our experience as succinct as possible.”

The location, to begin with, is as picturesque as you can get, nestled in between a few similar cottages with a working farm across the road, a 5-minute walk takes you to Hallsands beach with its lovely cliff walk. The location to sum it up is as tranquil as you can get but yet close to wonderful restaurants, beaches, villages and Kingbridge for shopping. The cottage itself is quite cosy and comfortable and cleaned to a very high standard and with all needed facilities, i.e., electric cooker, fridge, wash/dry machine, with plenty of utensils, pots and pans, etc. The bedrooms, bathroom were clean, comfortable and functional. The small deck garden was perfect for morning coffee and a bit of sun worshipping including a view of the sea, priceless. We were welcomed with a lovely touch by the host who supplied us with some provision, eggs, bread, butter and a bottle of wine. We love our stay so much, especially our granddaughter that we try to extend our stay, but, unfortunately, it was prebooked. We recommend this lovely cottage to all and sundry and we hope to be back in the near future for another adventure in Devon and our stay in Seacombe Cottage...

The property

In the little rural hamlet of Bickerton, 400 yards from Hallsands beach and the Coast Path which takes you to an excellent pub and seafood restaurant, is this Victorian cottage in a row of three.

Traditional in style and in a wonderfully peaceful setting, it is excellent accommodation for anyone who loves walking or the sea.

Head up a few steps from the little road and through stable doors into the open plan living space, all smart and comfortable with charming traces of the 19th century origins.

Snuggle up beside the warming wood burning stove, watch TV or enjoy leisurely meals around the dining table.

Head on upstairs to the two bedrooms, with doors from the bunk bedroom to the outdoor terrace.

This is a lovely, relaxing space to sit out in, with its table and chairs for alfresco meals and long views as far as the sea.

With the South West Coast Path so close, lace up your boots and head out for fabulous scenery and places where the path dips down into little coves and villages.

Marvel from the viewing platform at the cliffside ruins where the original village of Hallsands was washed into the waves on a stormy night in 1917.

Or go further to Beesands and some of the freshest and best fish and chips in the county from the beachside café or a drink at the pub where Mick Jagger gave his first public performance as a teenager.

Kingsbridge and Salcombe are both busy little towns to wander and indulge in some satisfying retail therapy.

Seacombe is a dear little base for immersing yourself in the delights of this lovely coastline.

About the location

HALLSANDS

Start Point 1.5 miles; Beesands 3 miles; East Portlemouth 5.5 miles; Kingsbridge 8 miles.

Hallsands is a small village near Start Point, one of the most southerly points on Devon’s coastline, near Salcombe in the beautiful South Hams area. The sheltered South Hams Peninsula is in 'deepest Devon', a pastoral landscape of flowering hedgerows and ancient sunken lanes, carved into by the richly wooded Avon and Dart Valleys. This quiet fishing village, with its dog-friendly, unspoilt beach, is situated next to the historic ‘old village’ of South Hallsands, just three miles from the popular Beesands Beach which has its own gastro pub and shop. This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is decorated with white, pink and ochre thatched cottages, picturesque fishing ports such as Dartmouth, and is renowned for its stunning coastline, popular with yachting enthusiasts. Much of the clifftop land has been acquired by the National Trust, a haven for bird watchers and walkers who take advantage of the South West Coast Path, peppered with perfect picnic spots. Nearby, uncover the beauty of Blackpool Sands and Torcross, a historic site where the Normandy landings were practiced; explore the nature reserve at Slapton Ley, and stroll along Slapton Beach, feeling the soft sand between your toes. Park at East Portlemouth and catch the ferry across to the beautiful seaside town of Salcombe with its renowned estuary, or visit the Start Point Lighthouse, less than a mile away. Hallsands is a wonderful base for uncovering the unspoilt beauty of Devon and the South Hams, all year round.
