Spacious, clean and modern, with twists of history. Sarah and Barry were brilliant hosts and all our wants and needs were met at all times. The location and setting are beautiful and we would recommend butterdon barn to anyone. We all thoroughly enjoyed the hot tub as well! 5* all day long! We will be back!!

Hosts are welcoming, friendly and nearby if needed but are not obtrusive. Cottage is well equipped and comfortable, in a good location for exploring Devon. Cottage is located along a very quiet but narrow country lane, a perfect setting for getting away from it all. WiFi not working on arrival but hosts were on the case and it was back working a few days later.

  • "This was our 2nd time staying at butterdon barn and it delivered just as well as the first time!"

We stayed for a week with our dog and our friends joined us for the bank holiday. The cottage is spacious and has everything you need. Lots of walks right from the doorstep which was perfect for us. Most of the walks are a little cross country but lots of fun and the scenery is just amazing! The lanes are fairly quiet and you can walk down to moretonhampstead. We were all exhausted each day after our long walks so a dip in the hot tub was well needed and appreciated. The grounds are very dog friendly and secure. We have just booked to stay for another week next year and can't wait to return. Thank you Sarah and Barry, see you next year!

Barry and Sarah very welcoming. It was a bonus to have such a big garden, weather for dogs or young children . It’s always quite exciting when you turn up at your holiday cottage, even tho you read the description, it’s always great to actually see it. And this did not disappoint at all, in fact was better than envisaged. Big thanks to Sykes ( as this was our 3rd year with yourselves, at 3 different locations ) and to Barry and Sarah for making our stay so memorable

The barn is superbly presented, well equipped and the lovely touches on arrival were most welcome. The garden is completely secure for dogs. ( Even more so now that Sarah and Barry have installed a side gate so you don’t need to close the front gates.) The weather wasn’t particularly good to us this time so we didn’t use the hot tub but with several walks straight from the door we managed not only to walk locally but to get out onto the moors every day. Finally, Sarah and Barry are wonderful hosts but not at all intrusive.I can thoroughly recommend Butterdon Barn. Thank you Sarah and Barry.

  • "Having just spent a week in the Barn we are back home fully re charged after such a relaxing week of being out and about in the Devon fresh air."

The barn is in such a peaceful spot surrounded by open land ideal for walking our dog. We were met on arrival by Sarah and Barry who straight away showed us how to operate the hot tub, inside Sarah had left eggs, tea and coffee facilities , jam , cake and biscuits all very mush appreciated. The barn was spotlessly clean and comfortable, outside is a very large secure garden which is surrounded by fields with wildlife all around . After a days walking it is nice to get into the hot tub and relax looking up at the stars which are so bright and visible due to the complete darkness which surrounds the barn when the sun goes down. Every evening we could sit outside on the patio area listening to the owl calls and other wildlife. Would we return or recommend to others YES to both . Both Barry and Sarah are on hand nearby if needed. Barry supplied us with a fresh chicken for tea one evening and it was the best chicken we have had. We had ordered all our required meat for xmas from barry which he delivered the day of departure, lamb, goose, beef , chops, ribeye and a couple of pheasants thrown in to. Now home again to noisy town living but fully recharged, a massive thank you to both Sarah and Barry for making our stay go so smoothly. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • "We just had the most relaxing stay at Butterdon Barn."

On arrival, we had a wonderful welcome by Sarah and Barry with their tray of tea, jam, flapjacks, farm eggs and milk. Our two kids and very active puppy found the garden perfect for playing in - safe and securely enclosed. We loved the location in the heart of Dartmoor National Park and really enjoyed the fact that Sarah and Barry's farm surrounded us from all sides. Cows, sheep, horses, chickens, cats, dogs, foxes, many rabbits and lots of birdlife were a real treat. Apparently, there's a resident grass snake who lives somewhere near the hot tub but we didn't meet her! The barn itself is so well equipped and everything has been carefully thought out. If you want to cook a roast or bake some cakes, the utensils are all there in the kitchen cupboards. No need to bring anything from home. If you are looking for a place to work on your laptop as you rest on the farm, then this is not for you! There is no Wifi BUT we loved that! It was so lovely to switch off from the internet for a week. The kids had no screen time, which was so refreshing and being together as a family over a game of cards on the patio was perfect! The only improvement we would comment on is the water situation in the showers. It can change suddenly from hot to freezing cold but that is not a deal-breaker by any means. This place is great not only for a family of four but also two couples or four friends, as both double beds can be made into twins and both bedrooms are ensuite. We will do our very best to return here again one day! Thank you Sarah and Barry :+)

Sarah and Barry were very welcoming and the provisions (jam, biscuits, milk etc) and flowers on the table were much appreciated. The property is in super condition and everything was just as it should be. The only thing we had forgotten was the lack of WiFi (we knew we’d get almost no phone signal). Whilst this can be a blessing, we did need to stay in touch with the outside world, so lots of trips to the top right hand corner of the garden were required. A really beautiful, quiet property in a stunning Dartmoor location.

  • "The photos of the barn really don't do it justice."

So spacious too, more space than we have ever had on holiday, both in the house and in the garden. I don't think that we have ever been anywhere so peaceful either - when we got home our street sounded so noisy - it took us a few days to adjust! Thank you for taking such good care of us whilst we were at Butterdon Barn, and also for sending us back the many items we somehow managed to leave behind. I had been looking for my book mark, and received it in the post before I even realised it was actually missing :)

It’s a half hour walk from Mortonhampstead where there are at least three great pubs for evening meals - all of which are dog friendly. The cottage is set in a completely enclosed paddock so we didn’t worry about the dog wandering off at all. At night the view of the stars is amazing and we saw a wide variety of wildlife while we were there as well. The lack of Wi-Fi and mobile phone connection only served to make a relaxing week Sven more restful. The cottage is tastefully decorated and the welcome drinks tray with delicious shortbread and homemade jam and freshly laid eggs was a lovely touch. Each bedroom has its own en-suite and the kitchen is well stocked with enough utensils to help you cater for your holiday if you need it. And the hot tub made a lovely holiday a luxurious break! One minor issue was one of the bedrooms had no wardrobes to hang clothes however; there were coat hangers on the back of the door so we used the clothes airer that was downstairs to hang other clothes on, maybe a thought to consider putting a wardrobe in for future use. Everything else you would need was available and a nice touch was to have milk, eggs and flowers upon arrival. The owner was very helpful and said at the start if we needed anything to contact her. No signal on phones until you reached the bottom of the road and did not like the single lane road again however, if you wanted a complete rest and peaceful week this is definitely the place to stay, plenty of space inside as well as outside, would recommend this property and enjoyed our stay there.

We do not feel this will be the case with Sykes. This is no detriment to Butterdon, which is a wonderful place to stay, it just means for other holidays in the future we will be looking at smaller companies with good property/area knowledge, who are happy to answer questions before booking.
