  • "Great location with fab views, very confortable inside with everything needed for a relaxing break."

Second time have visited porthole and will definitely look to come back at some point.

  • "Our families had a very comfortable stay at The Porthole and the facilities and location worked perfectly for all of us."

We would recommend this property to others. A few points that may need attention. On arrival there was a bad smell of sick in the downstairs double bunk room necessitating stripping of the beds and washing all the sheets and pillow cases. The family bathroom door upstairs became stuck as the handle did not work and trapped the occupant. This had to be jammed and taped. The internal stairs are steep and one of our party slipped and fell hitting the stairgate at the bottom. The outside steps are narrow and steep and poorly lit. Cutting back the side hedge further and installing steps lighting would improve safety enormously. The motion activated light at the base of the steps is inadequate. Parking outside can be a problem. No cot was provided as requested. Delayed final payment date was agreed but payment was still taken on original date.

  • "We had a wonderful stay at The Pothole and felt right at home in this beautiful property as there was plenty of space for us and our friends dogs and would highly recommend staying here."

The kitchen has everything you would need as well as a dishwasher. Couple of niggly things that can easily be rectified by the owner - Lack of fire wood/ fire lighters on our arrival on our first night. Pillows need replacing in the main bedroom as they have had there day. Door stuck closed on the twin room upstairs which is is due to a faulty handle but I managed to open by using credit card. It's is dangerous as someone could be trapped inside the room. The balcony door on the twin room is hard to open as well. Rain shower head in main bathroom needs to be thoroughly cleaned and descaled. The stairs are steep going down to the property from the main room and as we arriving at night and had to use the torches on our phones whilst carrying luggage. As it's had been raining I slipped on the manhole cover outside the front door so a larger rubber mat is needed to make this safe and the property would benefit from a motion sensors light on the outside. If these items could be sorted out by the owner then it would make the accommodation 5 star plus.

We are glad you enjoyed your stay at The Porthole. Firelighters are normally left for guests and apologies these were missed on this occasion; and we have made sure there is now adequate firewood for the first night's stay. Both doors you mentioned have now been fixed. Thank you for the suggestion of a large rubber mat covering the manhole cover - this has now been put in place. There is a motion sensor activating a light by the front door and steps leading to it, but unfortunately someone had accidentally switched this off on the day of your arrival. Property Owner

  • "We loved the Porthole and have already booked to stay next year!"

The views from the bedroom are stunning and we found it generally very comfortable with nice bedding and lovely powerful showers. We appreciated the milk/butter etc. that was left and the house was very well provisioned. Wi-Fi is good as is the TV set up with an Amazon Firestick. The location is also extremely convenient. Just a few points that could possibly be improved- the house wasn’t particularly clean when we arrived, there was a LOT of dust particularly in places like lampshades, side tables etc. as well as some mould on the bathroom tiles. My partner suffers from asthma so I went round and did a clean before settling in. Also the master ensuite door handle was very loose and fell off which meant you couldn’t shut the door properly and a lot of other handles seemed like they might fall off so those could do with fixing. Some seat cushions for the outside and inside dining chairs would be nice too.

We are delighted you loved The Porthole. We had a busy summer but as soon as we had a break in bookings we did a major deep clean. The en-suite door handle has been fixed, and all other ones were checked and fixed where required. There are seat cushions for the outside loungers. Property Owner

Everything provided that we needed. Nice and comfortable. New white goods that worked fine. Great outside seating. Small problems experienced :- a. hadn't realised the en-suite shower was restricted so much by the sloping ceiling. b. Some of the paintwork was dusty - especially in the en-suite c. No plug available to use in twin room unless you moved the bed out. d. The shower tray in the bathroom didn't drain so well. e. Not enough knives for use when using dishwasher.

Probably our favourite holiday home and we’ve been to a few. The Porthole manages to be practical, comfortable and well equipped whilst having the wow factor that you want on holiday - the views from the balconies ! The owners have got the balance just right, not so personal that you feel like you are sat in someone’s living room but still homely and with character. May break the habit of a lifetime and return a third time next year !

  • "This property was a delight to enter."

The location is breathtaking. Being situated on the estuary is an experience in itself. Beautiful! The top floor bedrooms are stunning, beautifully open and airy with the two balconies and the views. I would however state that the third bedroom downstairs is a little confining. Looking out into a wall, it’s naturally dark. However in the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t deter from the good vibes of the house. The bedding was wonderful. Clean and fresh. I would suggest that perhaps when stating teenagers staying, that they are given towels that are given to adults. All 4 of the teenagers I took had tiny towels and tower over me. This is a very small thing but would make the world of difference with regards to added comfort. I highly recommend this property and it will forever be a sacred part of our memories. And we all said that we would definitely revisit. Not only the area but the house. Thank you.

From the moment we stepped through the door, not only were we impressed with the cleanliness (you could smell the freshness in the air), but we were blown away by the cottage itself: it was so adorable. The gorgeous belongings really made it feel like home. We had more than we needed (towels, bath and shower gel, blankets, outside space) and was just so impressed. We will definitely be returning. The house is well equipped and spacious. We are so grateful that we found this gem a few years ago. It is a home from home and the area is just beautiful! We are now considered one of the 'locals' at the friendly Dolphin Pub, which does excellent food and drinks. We wanted to return later in the year but unfortunately the property will be having works done to it, but we cannot wait to see all the alterations when we can finally return again next year.

I had booked this house as a surprise family get together for my dad's 70th and it did not disappoint. The house is so beautiful, extremely clean and so well equipped. The view from the balcony is gorgeous and put a smile on my face when waking up. We were very lucky with the weather and so we sat were sat outside on the terrace by 8.30 a.m. every morning drinking coffee and enjoying our breakfast. On the Saturday the weather was warm enough to have a BBQ and again, the house was supplied with a BBQ, coals etc and all the utensils needed for it. We even made use of the sun loungers which was very relaxing. Newton Ferrers is idyllic to walk around and when the tide is out, you can use the walkway to walk over to Noss Mayo, which is just as lovely. We will definitely be returning to this house and Newton Ferrers again soon! Thank you so much to Skyes Holiday Cottages for an unforgettable stay!

The property

The Porthole is a stylish semi detached house 150 yards from the centre of Newton Ferrers.

Facing south across the river, it is excellent spacious accommodation for relaxing and enjoying the popular village.

Head down the 18 steep steps (handrail) from the road and through your gate and leave your coats and boots in the porch.

The kitchen is smart and bright with its granite worktops and little breakfast area for a morning croissant and the papers.

With its soothing colours and polished wood floor, you can curl up and chill out beside the wood burning stove in the sitting room or open the French windows to the sunny terrace on a fine day.

On this level is a bunk bedroom for the youngsters, or head up the steep narrow stairs to two more bedrooms, both with light flooding in from balconies where you can step outside and observe life on the river.

As well as the two balconies, you have the little terrace for sitting out or barbecuing, peacefully sheltered by a pretty wisteria.

Wander into the heart of the village to buy essentials and to eat out at the charming waterside inns, or walk further to National Trust woodland and the scenic cliff top Coast Path.

If you feel like getting more active, take part in wakeboarding or paddle boarding trips, play tennis or go riding.

Beaches at Mothecombe and Wembury are not to be missed, both gems on this South Devon coast.

And for the city bright lights head to Plymouth for interesting history and all sorts of attractions, shops and restaurants.

The Porthole is a great cottage for recharging your energy levels over a fabulous view or exploring the area.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £100.

About the location

NEWTON FERRERS

Plymouth 8 miles.

A tranquil, picturesque village in the South Hams area of Devon, on a bend of the River Yealm leading up from the South Devon coast (1 mile). The perfect haven for sailors, for those who love messing about near water and for those who appreciate stunning and civilised countryside. There is a local butcher, chemist, post office and grocer in Newton Ferrers and an organic farm shop just two miles away. The village pub, with fantastic views across the water towards Noss Mayo and the creek, serves good food and drink. The area is blessed with many walks that meander along the waterside and across the fields, while to the north Dartmoor's high tors and open spaces beckon those who love wild country. The city of Plymouth with its shops, Marine Aquarium and Barbican quayside area is just 8 miles away while beautiful Totnes with its 'alternative' view on life is a must. If the beach rather than boats is what you seek, you won't do better than the beautiful sands at Mothecombe and Bigbury just a few miles down the road. Both are accessible by road or boat from Newton Ferrers. There are a number of excellent golf courses nearby.

Note: Neighbouring house has right of access through the garden (rarely used)

Note: Dogs are NOT allowed upstairs. Stairgates are available to help, as required.
