  • "There were many good aspects of this house: It's in a lovely, secluded position with great sea views, it is well appointed with good beds, linen and furniture; the appliances are all of a high standard and worked well."

The house was ready and clean when we arrived, though there were many cobwebs, which made me think it hadn't been occupied in a while. What lets this house down is thoughtlessness and a lack of professionalism. Both Helpful Holidays and the management company Second2None are responsible for this - though I think the owners too need to work harder to make the house welcoming and useable for visitors. Firstly, there is no welcome pack, no instructions for these high quality appliances and no information about the house or area. We have stayed in dozens of rental houses in the area over the years and have never come across this - it felt sterile and unwelcoming. It also meant we struggled to work the oven... When we contacted Helpful Holidays, they passed it on to Second2None, who left a brief, pencil-written note which was no help at all. This was accompanied by a hamper to apologise but - nice as this was - it didn't help with the fundamental problem. We never did receive any instructions for any of the appliances and had to work it out as best we could. Most critically of all, there were no outdoor dustbins and no arrangements for rubbish collection or recycling. We had to contact Second2None who did bring bins but had to be reminded to come and take it all away, as presumably the owners haven't paid the council for collection arrangements. It's really not acceptable to have no recycling arrangements these days, especially in a beautiful area like Salcombe where the holiday population puts enormous strain on the environment and infrastructure. The linen was changed halfway through our week but the used linen was left outside for another member of staff from Second2None to collect; we had to remind them twice about this and they did come after three days to remove it. Naturally, I contacted Helpful Holidays again about all this but all that happened was I received a feedback request to which I had no response. Another woman I spoke to promised to call me back and never did. I was left with the impression that the complaints and feedback process is a tickbox exercise and not taken seriously. In short, we felt we did not get the full value for the very expensive rental cost. It's a lovely house let down by lack of professionalism and carelessness.

Thank you very much for taking the time to leave us your feedback. We’re pleased that overall you liked White Horses and we very much hope you enjoyed your holiday. We’d like to thank you for the couple of issues you’ve highlighted and we’d like to let you know that the owners will be putting together a welcome/information pack to let guests know more about the property and of course, how to operate all the appliances. This information pack will of course also include clear information on refuse and recycling arrangements (which as a holiday let, is done through a private company as opposed to the council). We hope very much this will help people in future and we hope that we’ll see you again soon! Property Owner

  • "Very comfortable, spacious, well equipped property."

We particularly enjoyed the comfy garden furniture and sunny patio with sea view. Be warned its a 30 minute strenuous walk to Salcombe, good for burning off dinner!

  • "Excellent accommodation."

The house is a great size and very nicely furnished. Enjoyed everything about the house - including the bats in the garden at dusk! It was our first visit to Salcombe. The roads are very small and I would say we have preferred other places we’ve been (more to do for youngsters nearby). Would be great if the owners printed a simple welcome sheet.

  • "We had a lovely stay at White Horses."

We were surprised that there were not any bins outside, so we called the local number and were told to leave the rubbish in big black plastic bags by the main gate. Also, there was no vacuum cleaner in the house, nor a hairdryer. The house provided us with everything we needed for a great break.

  • "This is a beautiful house in a wonderful setting."

There are a few pointers that would elevate this house to a higher standard; - It was advertised as having a snug/office for use. However, this room had the owners personal belongings in it and was untidy and had an ‘unfinished’ feel with no furniture. It would be a great asset to the house to have this as a little snug/TV room for use. - There is no welcome pack or information on arrival. - There are no recycling facilities or information about bin collections. This really is poor in this day and age - Hairdryers would be a welcome addition - A clothes horse/dryer would also be useful - A vegetable peeler that actually peels would also be good! Other than the above, the house was clean, spacious and we had a lovely holiday.

  • "The house was lovely, beautifully done inside, wonderful views, fabulous garden, one of the best houses we have stayed in."

Would definitely stay there again. We had a fabulous week. Two tiny points, it would be great if there was a full length mirror somewhere in the house, maybe on the inside of a wardrobe door. It would be useful if there was a book with a few instructions for the washing machine, where to find the WiFi code etc. Other than those 2 small points, perfect. Thank you
