    “There were many good aspects of this house: It's in a lovely, secluded position with great sea views, it is well appointed with good beds, linen and furniture; the appliances are all of a high standard and worked well.”

    The house was ready and clean when we arrived, though there were many cobwebs, which made me think it hadn't been occupied in a while. ...

    The house was ready and clean when we arrived, though there were many cobwebs, which made me think it hadn't been occupied in a while. What lets this house down is thoughtlessness and a lack of professionalism. Both Helpful Holidays and the management company Second2None are responsible for this - though I think the owners too need to work harder to make the house welcoming and useable for visitors. Firstly, there is no welcome pack, no instructions for these high quality appliances and no information about the house or area. We have stayed in dozens of rental houses in the area over the years and have never come across this - it felt sterile and unwelcoming. It also meant we struggled to work the oven... When we contacted Helpful Holidays, they passed it on to Second2None, who left a brief, pencil-written note which was no help at all. This was accompanied by a hamper to apologise but - nice as this was - it didn't help with the fundamental problem. We never did receive any instructions for any of the appliances and had to work it out as best we could. Most critically of all, there were no outdoor dustbins and no arrangements for rubbish collection or recycling. We had to contact Second2None who did bring bins but had to be reminded to come and take it all away, as presumably the owners haven't paid the council for collection arrangements. It's really not acceptable to have no recycling arrangements these days, especially in a beautiful area like Salcombe where the holiday population puts enormous strain on the environment and infrastructure. The linen was changed halfway through our week but the used linen was left outside for another member of staff from Second2None to collect; we had to remind them twice about this and they did come after three days to remove it. Naturally, I contacted Helpful Holidays again about all this but all that happened was I received a feedback request to which I had no response. Another woman I spoke to promised to call me back and never did. I was left with the impression that the complaints and feedback process is a tickbox exercise and not taken seriously. In short, we felt we did not get the full value for the very expensive rental cost. It's a lovely house let down by lack of professionalism and carelessness.

The property

White Horses is a big detached house privately set at the end of a no-through lane above South Sands and North Sands beaches in Salcombe.

With fantastic sea views and beautifully styled rooms, this is wonderful accommodation for spending quality time with family or friends.

From the hall, head into the L-shaped open-plan hub of the house where your eye will be drawn to the views to Prawle Point from the big bay window.

This is a room for relaxing, with its wood floors, smart furniture, cosy wood burning stove and bespoke kitchen area.

On sunny days, you can open the French windows to the terrace.

For anyone who prefers a ground floor bedroom, there is a handy en suite double which enjoys those great sea views, or head upstairs to three more bedrooms, also looking out to sea with even a little balcony off one of the en suite doubles.

The garden rambles all around the house, making it brilliantly secluded.

You've a choice of eating alfresco at the picnic table on the lawn or at the table on the terrace.

Wander down into Salcombe to enjoy the picturesque beaches, to explore the boutique shops and to eat out at a range of excellent restaurants and waterside pubs.

You can work it all off with the variety of activities available in this yachty location, including kayaking, paddleboarding, surfing and boat hire.

To keep your feet dry, walk the Coast Path, play golf at Bigbury or stroll around stunning NT gardens.

With its spacious and stylish interior and location in a popular area, White Horses is a fabulous place to stay.

About the location

SALCOMBE

Kingsbridge 7 miles; Dartmouth 21 miles; Plymouth 24 miles; Paignton 26 miles.

Salcombe is a popular destination for walkers and families looking for a holiday by the sea and was once a major port. There are two pretty beaches within a short distance, North Sands and South Sands and further on is the National Trust property Overbeck’s where you can wander through the subtropical gardens. Why not have a more adventurous day and try out the watersports available on the estuary including surfing, kayaking or a more leisurely boat trip? Whilst staying in Salcombe you must take advantage of the locally sourced seafood which is served in many of the restaurants, pubs, cafés and delicatessens. The southern tip of Devon provides some spectacular scenery and picturesque vistas with a number of sandy beaches, lovely villages with thatched cottages and some fantastic opportunities for walking, including the South West Coast path.
