    “The property was very comfortable and the log burner made the property really cosy.”

    Plenty of storage. It was lovely to be welcomed by the owners on our arrival. The only thing we could have done with was a potato masher, but we managed without.

The property

Settled in the glorious woodlands of Dartmoor National Park, is this stone-built dwelling, Old School House, boasting fantastic walking trails from the foot of the door.

The grand, detached property sits back from the road with a lengthy driveway to leave your vehicles on and is within easy reach of cascading waterfalls and a sandy beach, making this the idyllic abode for a family getaway.

Take in the quaint surroundings before entering the welcoming home, with a charming sitting room to unwind in after an action-packed day; here you can admire the warmth of the woodburning stove as you lay back and sink into the sumptuous sofa.

Prepare tasty dishes in the capacious kitchen/diner, hosting a plethora of useful appliances, as well as a handy utility room to wash your holiday attire.

When dinner is ready, gather around the oak dining table, break open a bottle of champagne and make a toast to your rural retreat.

Carry the conversation to the rear garden before the sun sets to relish the countryside air on the outdoor furniture.

As the evening draws to a close, head back inside, climb up to the first floor to discover three excellent double bedrooms, all beautifully laid out with ample storage to house your belongings.

In the morning, wake-up with an invigorating rinse in the family bathroom or opt for a leisurely soak in the tub to prepare for the exciting day ahead.

This lovely dwelling is an excellent base for exploring a splendour of nature; lace up your walking boots and embark on a walk across the National Trust Shaugh Bridge, where you can begin your journey up to Dewerstone for incomparable views over the moors or head to the charming Cadover Bridge, where you can settle down to enjoy a picnic with loved ones or visit the 12th-century stone cross nearby.

Next stop is Yelverton which can be accessed via the Cadover Bridge, where you will find a good selection of pubs and restaurants, perfect for grabbing a tasty bit to eat and cold drink after a long walk, as well as a well-stocked convenience store, hairdressers, butchers and an excellent golf club for those who have brought their clubs.

Just a short drive away is the remarkable Buckland Abbey, a historic National Trust property which boasts and museum, beautifully manicured gardens and expansive woodlands with walking trails to be explored.

Just a little further is the historic market town of Tavistock, where you can delve into the town’s heritage at the Tavistock Museum, visit the the award-winning Pannier Market which has been taking place since the 11th century.

Be sure to visit one of the many delightful cafes and tea rooms each serving Tavistocks heritage cream tea, a delicious treat whilst on your travels.

For a fun-filled family day, pack up the car and head to the glorious sands of Wembury, where you can paddle the shores, build sandcastles and discover the rockpools that speckle the beach.

About the location

The ancient town of Plympton, previously a stannary town, was a vital trading port, due to its locally mined tin and is perched on the trackway leading to Dartmoor, 'The Ridgeway'. In 1086, Plympton was controlled by William the Conqueror, as recorded in the Doomsday Book. Due to the rapid growth of Plypmton, which began in the early 2000s, the town has been divided into Yealmpstone, Plympton-St Maurice, Colebrook, Underwood, Woodford and Chaddlewood. The town hosts 'The Lamb Feast' each year at the Castle Green, which is devised by the Plympton Civic Association. Many friendly pubs and restaurants can be found in the town, serving food and cask ales, as well as a plethora of retail shops and independent cafes. Just 6 miles away is the cobbled streets of Plymouth and slightly further afield is the peaceful village of Newton Ferrers, settled in South Devon's Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
