We were all very happy there and made some amazing family memories. We all felt very at home. There are lots of lovely places to sit, inside and out. The bedrooms are all fabulous and spacious with great views. Sitting room, kitchen, dining area, patio are wonderful too as well as the games room and sun room. We’ll be back for sure!

We just love hearing our guests, had a wonderful and memorable holiday. Sandsgate has been in our family for decades and we all love it too! We look forward to welcoming you back. Thank you Property Owner

  • "A truly fabulous property set in lovely grounds and with views to die for."

Extremely well equipped with everything we could possibly need. We were a 3-generation party of 11, comprising 6 adults and 5 children with ages ranging from 20 months through to 9 yrs.The property was perfect for our needs, extremely spacious with lots of areas for people to spread out although we tended to congregate in the kitchen/living/dining area. The children, especially the younger ones, loved the toy box which was a very welcome surprise and the older ones made very good use of the games room. We really did feel very privileged to have use of the property and would not hesitate to recommend to anyone.

Thank you so much for your kind words - Sandsgate is a very special home for us. I do hope we will be welcoming you back again soon. Property Owner

  • "Superbly equipped house with stupendous views in a wonderful setting."

We were a family of 8 adults and five children aged from15 months to 6 years. Huge selection of games and toys was most welcome and helpful. The stair-gates were a little wobbly and a helpful addition would be some kind of barrier or gate at the bottom of the main stairs. The choice and number of kitchen utensils and cookware was amazing but perhaps more space could be made available for groceries. We all loved our stay at Sandsgate and the house really made our holiday a truly wonderful experience enjoyed by all of us, especially the children. Thank you for providing such excellent accommodation, gardens and views. We cannot recommend Sandsgate highly enough as a destination for a family holiday and/or reunion.

I am so pleased you had a great holiday and thank you for the feedback - we will check the stair-gates and replace if necessary. We can also provide a stair-gate at the bottom of the stairs if requested. I hope we will welcome you back to Sandsgate Property Owner

  • "This is a lovely property and we had a great week's family holiday."

The furnishings and equipment (particularly kitchen) were all there in abundance, and there is a lot to see and do in the area (which we already knew quite well having lived near Teignmouth some years ago). We could have done with a stout hand rail on the main stairs, and a scale site plan would have been useful. Otherwise really good, and it all went so well that we may try it again.

Thank you for your feedback - we have actioned your request for maps and they are now in place. Thank you for your kind words. Property Owner

Beautiful house, well equipped, spotlessly clean, comfortable beds and the utility room with a washing machine and dryer is a great help when 3 families are staying for a week. There were 12 of us staying and the house was big enough to still feel spacious. The garden is wonderful, beautiful views. We will be booking again for sure.

  • "Spectacular location with great views towards Castle Drogo."

Very comfortable well appointed house. Beautiful garden spaces - terrace, woodland, fire pit area. Lots of parking, big fridges, professional Ringmaster cooker, games room, lots of sparkling clean bathrooms. (We hesitate to raise our only niggle - but we all would have preferred king sized beds rather than the slightly unusual pairs of small doubles in 3 out of 5 of the bedrooms, but accept that others might like this arrangement.) All in all highly recommended for a lovely luxurious stay in a beautiful large house in an exceptional location. We loved it.

Hi I am delighted you had such a lovely holiday and enjoyed your stay at Sandsgate. Thank you for your kind words. We use 4 foot beds instead of king-size beds purely because it is more flexible for the majority of guests who come and stay with us. We have quite a few multigenerational families or groups of walkers or friends and we find that they prefer to have a bed each. However I fully understand your comment and I hope it didn't detract from your experience too much . Nickie (owner) Property Owner

We were blessed with good weather on our stay and made the most of the garden as a result. The beds were really comfortable, as was all of the house. The star of the show however were the views. On a clear sunny day the view of Castle Drogo and the countryside was beautiful. It was a bit tricky to find the house but was worth the trip!

  • "A lovely comfortable property with magnificent views and grounds, although a little TLC outside would not be amiss, for example it was a pity the water feature was not working which was disappointing."

Thank you for your feedback. We are happy to hear you found Sandsgate to be a comfortable and lovely property with beautiful gardens. The water feature in the garden is working but it turned off for the safety of the little guests. There is an on/off switch that allows the guests to control the fountain and the explanation on how to operate it is found in the welcome book. We hope you will visit Sandsgate again in the future. We had a lovely week, there were 10 of us and the house was spacious enough for us all. The beds were super comfy, all bedrooms were delightfully decorated. A great size kitchen/diner with the most amazing views over Dartmoor. The main sitting room had a huge TV and access to Netflix which the kids loved in the evenings. All in all a beautiful and comfortable house. We would definitely recommend Sandsgate and will be booking again soon.

The views are beautiful but of course showers and rain are frequent and as there is no cover it means sitting outside is disrupted or sometimes not possible. Could a gazebo or awning or similar be erected to take advantage, don't think it needs heat personally but power might be an idea.

  • "This property is a hidden gem in a fantastic location just as you enter the Dartmoor National Park."

The views are out of this world and you truly feel like you are completely isolated from the rest of the world which is exactly what we had hoped for. There was bags of space for our group with all bedrooms being more than sufficient in size, a games room, a large lounge area and the enormous kitchen was suitably well equipped. The gardens were fantastic for our young people to explore aged 6-8. There it's lots to do and see locally and we enjoyed walks to Chagford and Sandy Park, a walk from Castle Drogo to Dewsteignton and Fingle Bridge. A little further afield we travelled to Dartmeet and Spitchwick for a picnic and kayaking, Dartmouth for some crab fishing and Saunton Sands Beach on separate days. There is so much to do from Sandsgate and we look forward to hopefully returning again one day.

  • "We had to book half term as my son is a teacher, but on arriving the area didn't have anything open and we still had paid half term prices."

Anywhere we had to go we had to travel out of the area. We thought Chagford would be more accessible but the road in is very narrow and not suitable to drive at night time as if you meet traffic at times you would need to reverse to let other cars past and this was difficult in the dark. Nearest decent supermarket is in Oakhampton which is quite a drive away. (Co-op and Waitrose) As for the house it was perfect for our large family and as the weather was against us we spent a lot of time entertaining.

We are sorry to hear that you had difficulty getting to the nearby stannary town of Chagford. Our Devon country lanes, can be quite narrow in places. There are several different routes into Chagford, one of them along the A382 to Easton Court, where the roads into Chagford are wider with passing places. Chagford has a wide variety of shops which include a Spar, hardware store, butchers, florists and a delicatessen. Okehampton a 20-minute drive away along the A30, has three supermarkets, a Coop, Lidls and Waitrose. Property Owner

The property

In a splendid location down a driveway on a hillside three miles from the Dartmoor town of Chagford is this wonderful detached house.

With a terrace stretching the entire width of the house for views across the Teign Valley to Castle Drogo, this is a splendid house for big families or groups of friends to enjoy.

The big sitting room has French windows to that terrace, as well as comfy sofas and an open fire.

You will enjoy spending time in the kitchen, which is another magnificent room where you can dine around the huge table, chill out in the seating area over the Dartmoor views, watch TV, or rustle up a meal whilst the children play with the toys provided.

A study also opens to those time wasting vistas.

Take the stairs up to a games room on the first floor, where you can enjoy a game of pool or table football or watch TV.

All the bedrooms are smart, with those views and TV, but the pièce de résistance is the big master bedroom, complete with its own sunroom which leads you through to a balcony where you can gaze over Castle Drogo with an evening drink.

There are three other bedrooms, plus a shower room and beautiful bathroom on this floor, then follow more stairs up two large bedrooms under the eaves, sharing a bathroom.

Outside there are 18 vast acres of lovely peaceful natural grounds, with lawns, ancient woodland and even a prehistoric stone circle, so there’s plenty of room for your four legged friend to roam!

Dartmoor’s vast open spaces are within easy reach and waiting exploration, whether you’re an avid rambler or you are simply seeking to explore the beauty of this fantastic area of Devon, there’s lots of activity to be found.

Castle Drogo rests high above the Teign Valley is a National Trust gem and well worth a visit, or spend some time in the local town of Chagford, though small in size there are a variety of things to do, with shops, pubs and an open air swimming pool.

Whisk away to the beautiful cathedral city of Exeter, home to a vibrant range of landmarks and attractions.

Nestled in a beautiful region with easy access to the Dartmoor National Park, choose Sandgate as your next abode in Devon.
