  • "We really enjoyed staying at this cottage."

Clean, all amenities included, spacious, lovely standard throughout. Amazing views of the beach and sea from most windows. We had one minor issue which was resolved immediately with professionalism. One improvement to consider would be to add the cottage name at the front of the gate to make it visible from the road at night. Had to drive up and down a few times before we figured it out :) Would definately return again.

Hello, and thank you for laving your feedback after your stay at Coach House Cottage. I am delighted that you really enjoyed your stay, we will look into clearer signage for the cottage. With best wishes, Patrick Property Owner

  • "This is just as described, a beautiful cottage looking out to sea over the stunning coastline."

It has been furnished and equipped with great style and elegance, to a very high standard, while still feeling like a comfortable home. Winter is a good time to stay here, as the one of bedroom windows and an upper room window look due east and the sun rises at around normal breakfast time, so if like us, you are lucky with the weather you are in for a treat. And the minor roads are quieter! With short drives to the Dartmouth and Salcombe estuaries, Start Point, Prawle Point etc, the stretches of the coast path are wonderful. Observations for winter visits. When the arrival time is given as 4pm it would be good to find the cottage warmed up by then. When we arrived around 5.30pm the heating was only just coming on and was set low. It quickly warmed up upstairs however and the radiators are very good but it made for a chilly start. This is obviously more so if the cottage has been empty for a while previously. A,curtain/blind over the glazed external door would help to keep the cold out in the evenings. If you come in winter, hot water bottles/wheat bags are useful here as bedwarmers, and a few extra throws come in handy.

Hello, and thank you for your feedback about your stay at Coach House Cottage. We have tried to create a home from home feel to the cottage and are happy to hear that you rated the standard as high whilst retaining the feel of a comfortable home. Your point about having a warm cottage to walk in to is noted and we will adjust the heating accordingly for winter visits. Your suggestion regarding hot water bottle is useful and we will purchase a couple for the cottage. We will explore options for the behind the front door. Throws are trickier as they can become 'grimy' looking, but will think on regarding this point. Thank you for your thoughtful and considered feedback. Best wishes, Patrick Property Owner

  • "The cottage is set in a pretty garden with fabulous views."

The upstairs living room is well set out. The kitchen area has plenty of cutlery, crockery and pans. The fridge is a standard under the counter size with a small freezer box. The only thing missing appears to be a serated bread knife, the delicious local sourdough bread was a bit of a challenge to cut with the knives available. And the salt grinder was empty. The back right hand hob control is a little loose and the temperature is therefore a bit vague. There are no instructions for the oven which took a bit of trail and error before I got it working correctly. The two bedrooms are small but adequate. The bedding is of high quality, the duvets are lovely and warm. The shower is excellent and towels soft. The whole cottage has been furnished to a high standard with comfortable sofa, chairs and beds. The driveway is shared by two other properties. It is a bit awkward to drive into the parking space so may take a couple of manoeuvres. Exiting the property in either direction must be taken with care as there is a wall which restricts the road view slightly. I had looked at google maps before our visit and found excellent road views from Strete of the siting of the cottage. We took the road from Halwell direct to Dartmouth and then down the A379 to Strete, which we found to be a slightly better route for us, with a few single track squeeze points, even though it was longer than the directions given. There was only one thing we found not pleasant about the cottage. The were several reed scent diffusers in the cottage which were quite strong scented. These we had to put away in a cupboard as they made us cough. However, the smell of cold damp was obvious in the single bedroom without the diffuser. So we put one in the bedroom in the day when we were out, and removed it on our return. I appreciate that this is an old stone property and everything has been done to make the cottage as warm and comfortable as possible, but a previous reviewer had also mentioned the damp smell. This might be because in the colder months windows are not opened and the cottage is shaded by large trees.I would still recommend the cottage as it is a lovely property but maybe better in the warmer weather next time.

Thank you very much for taking the time to give such thorough feedback on your stay at Coach House Cottage. Kitchen wise, apologies about the bread knife, there always has been one at the cottage as it is an essential item - the missing one has now been replaced. The cooker has now been fixed and oven instructions will be left in the kitchen area for visitors. Care does need to be taken when exiting the property onto the main road as it is quite a tight turn with limited vision. Thank you for your comments about the reed diffusers. We have changed these to a mildly scented aroma. We encourage visitors to open the windows in clement weather, leaving internal doors open also helps good airflow throughout the cottage, and using the central heating as appropriate. I hope that overall your stay at Coach House Cottage was enjoyable. With best wishes, Patrick Property Owner

  • "Fantastic views and great garden."

More local info on walks etc would have been helpful & a turning mirror. The beds were too small for us.

Hello and thank you for taking the time to feedback on your stay at The Coach House Cottage. There were a couple of books at the cottage on local walks etc so I will ask the changeover team to see if they have put put in an 'odd' place, or have 'walked' out of the cottage. We will ensue they are found or replaced. The turning is tricky, but manageable with patience and care! The size of the beds is stated on the cottage details, I hope this inconvenience did not detract from you stay at the cottage. With best wishes, Patrick Property Owner

  • "Overall, a lovely property in a breathtaking setting."

Unseasonal weather was a bonus. Facilities good (except for slightly dodgy on-off on one cooker ring). Bedrooms just a little cramped - not the end of the world! Furniture comfortable, and garden extremely pleasant. Peaceful despite being on a main road, but exiting the property going northwards is mildly nerve-wracking. Good value for money.

Hello and thank you taking the time to feedback on you stay at The Coach House Cottage. So glad you had some unseasonable good weather! Apologies about the cooker ring not working, and thank you for letting us know, this has now been repaired. The bedrooms are 'tight' due to the configuration of the cottage, but hope this did not lessen the enjoyment of your stay. So glad you were able to enjoy the garden. Hello and thank you for your super feedback. I'm so glad that you had such a good stay for your birthday treat. • "We had a wonderful stay at the coach house."

There were a few possibilities for improvement (see below) but none of these detracted significantly enough from the stay for us to rate any less than 5 star! Would definitely stay here again and highly recommend Positive - lovely little property with a calming interior and beautiful views and very close to Strete Gate Beach (2 min drive) - 15 min drive from Dartmouth town - mostly clean - well stocked kitchen - matches, salt, pepper, coffee, tea, sugar and milk provided - plenty of dishwasher tabs provided. One washing machine tab provided. Also handy that there is a clothes dryer that we could use! - kitchen roll provided - tea towels provided (ignore Sykes cottages on this one!) - great garden space! Well kempt and beautiful - our daughter loved running around the space! - clever use of some space down stairs e.g coat rack and washing machine in toilet room! So whilst it is small, they have made good use of the space (just low on storage - see below( - random, but I love the seashell handle on the upstairs cupboard! Sweet little touch /. - Patrick responded helpfully and when a couple of items broke (not our fault) he kindly said he would fix Negative: - small fridge - but we made it work so it's not awful. Small freezer compartment was handy also - cobwebs on bed. And quite a few spiders/daddy long legs around! - lack of adequate storage space in bedrooms - not a lot can be done about this but helpful to make people aware - it would be helpful to have a safety mirror across road as it can be quite tricky coming out of the driveway, particularly when turning right Personal choices that would have made it a bit better - but I totally understand these are not everyone's requirements (I'm also writing this here so others know what they might need to pack!): - provide oil & butter - extra towels. I need one for body and one for hair - the hand towel just doesn't cut it for my hair - not enough toilet roll for 2 days - not sure if they are meant to provide but obviously this would be helpful - smal bowls (for snacks) and a bottle stopper (for fizz). Realise most people will not care about this, just would have been helpful for us and possibly some others? - Ice cube tray would have been nice Be aware, smoke alarm goes off if you have shower & door is open! Overall, this was a fantastic, truly memorable stay and we would encourage you to book if you are considering it!!

Hello and thank you for taking the time to give some feedback after your stay at Coach House Cottage. I am delighted that you had a wonderful stay ! Regarding your comments, the starter pack provided in the cottage is just that - so that people can make a cup of tea or coffee with milk and sugar when they arrive. Good to know that there were plentiful dishwashing tablets, we will ensure there are a couple of washing machine tablets as well. One new toilet roll will be provided. There are now 2 ice cube trays in the freezer compartment. With reference to towels, we find that one large bath sheet and a good sized hand towel is generally sufficient, it's hard to keep more towels dry for continued use. Regarding the cobwebs on beds, this is extraordinary to hear as we have excellent cleaners who go in on the day of arrival to clean and ensure everything is in order. Overall, we are you had a truly memorable stay and thank you for recommending a stay at Coach House Cottage. Best wishes - Patrick Property Owner

  • "Beautifully appointed cottage Quality fixtures, fittings and interior design Lovely extra thoughtful touches such as washing machine tablets, dish washing tablets, tea/coffee & sugar provided."

The upstairs living area is fantastic, gorgeous kitchen, good dining area & very comfy lounge area making good use of the stunning views, even though the property stands on the costal “A road” at night there is so little noise and you can hear the sea. Everything you possibly need & plenty of kitchen storage cupboards if you like cooking/eating in. (Which we do) the fridge is just an under counter one with only a small ice box so if you have done a full weeks/big shop (which we had) & want to have drinks in the fridge it’s quite a squash but we kept a cool box on the go by rotating freezer blocks & kept drinks in there so easily managed. The Garden is very private & beautifully maintained & a lovely place to sit in the late afternoon sun (slightly dabbled due to trees) The only reason given 4 stars & not 5 for comfort is the size of the goths floor, specifically the double bedroom. It does explain in the description that the bed is a recess but hadn’t appreciated quite how small it was with no room for bedside table/draws ……there is a very small thin table at one side & a very small corner shelf on the wall and then only a tiny closet for hanging a few clothes, there are no drawers at all. It is however decorated beautifully & has a wonderful/pretty full length window so very pretty. We didn’t have a 3rd person so we were able to use the chest & closet in the single bedroom, which was also very pretty. The bathroom is stunning & has a really good sized separate shower and a small stand alone bath. There is a good sized separate WC and wash basin, with a washing machine under the stair recess. Getting in & out of the property with the car (despite it being straight onto the A379) is easy due to the way the drive (that also serves the main house) has been configured if you manoeuvre it correctly, you can see on coming traffic whichever way you are going. Great central location for visiting/exploring the Start Bay Area, Kingsbridge & Dartmouth areas. We also thought we’d feel frustrated not being able to just walk down to Strete Gate beach across the field & below the property (no public path & you would not want to walk/cross the A379) however soon realised that we weren’t missing out (it would have been a hard steel climb back up) it’s a 2 minute drive down & no hassle at all, plenty of parking spaces & the parking is only £1 per hour. Overall this property is stunning & the only compromise is the bedroom space. We had a fabulous week despite mixed weather.

Thank you for your positive feedback on Coach House Cottage. I am delighted that you had such a great stay and enjoyed all that the cottage and the local area has to offer. Regarding the bedrooms, they are small! We hoped the photos show a fair representation of both bedrooms, including the absence of 'proper' bedside tables in the double bedroom. I hope this didn't detract from your stay at all. Regarding the storage of clothes that would be put in a chest of drawers, thank you for flagging this. We will have a think about the option of some shelving in the wardrobe in this bedroom which would help guests. With best wishes, Patrick Property Owner

Comfy mattress and furnishings. Everything we needed in the kitchen was provided. Excellent bathrooms. Superb enclosed sun trap garden and even though it was a windy there was always a sheltered spot to relax. Even though the house is next to a road we were surprised how little we could actually hear the traffic. The sea was the background sound and was lovely to hear. We enjoyed our week and wouldn’t hesitate to return.

  • "The accommodation was immaculate with quality furnishings and housewares, and top notch bathroom fittings and underfloor heating."

Good job we brought our own garden chairs as the ones provided had never seen wood preserver since their construction so didn’t want to risk any accidental damage. The garden itself was well-appointed if a little breezy which was ideal being way up on a hill overlooking the shingle beach. The road was much busier during our stay due to the fact that we did not receive updated information about main road closures from Totnes which made our journey two hours longer having to go via Plymouth then back up towards Kingsbridge. The closures were permanent for three weeks and our week was in the middle week. So we went as far as Salcombe and Kingsbridge going west and Dartmouth going east. Was hoping to meet relatives in Paignton but because of the key road closures it would have cost far too much to get the park and ride in Dartmouth then take the ferry and steam train to Paignton with the last train coming back around 4 o’clock, than going the long way round by car. The closure of an important main road was unfortunate and unavoidable but it would have been really helpful to have had some guidance instead of the usual road directions supplied in the email. We asked for help as we approached the surprise road closure sign but the exceedingly unpleasant garage assistant was quite rude and surly, making no eye contact and snarled at us, even though I bought petrol from her. The break itself was well enjoyed and the highlights included sitting on the very quiet beach at Strete, under perfect skies with the gentle sound of the waves lapping against the shingles. The pace was relaxed as an antidote to stress at work and we were also welcomed by a pint of milk thoughtfully left in the fridge. The log stove must be a source of comfort during the cold weather but we didn’t use it, although logs and kindling were provided. The log stove is located at the opposite end of the room to the comfy seats and tv but would appeal to those wanting a fire in winter. The central heating system was excellent and we used it chiefly for an hour or so in the evening The bedrooms are a bit confined for space but this didn’t impede any enjoyment and comfort. Slept very well on a comfortable bed with quality bed linen as well as the provision of thick fluffy towels. All in all I would recommend staying here if you want peace and quiet and are willing to travel to Kingsbridge or Dartmouth for quality restaurants. There are a few recommendations from other people who have stayed in the Coach House but alas the roads were closed to them. Be prepared to pay £28 for a basic fish and veg dish, £11 - £16 for luscious fish and chips (Codfather in Kingsbridge and the Wheel House in Dartmouth) and £18 for a burger, £3.80 for a single cone ice cream (recommend Salcombe dairy ice cream especially the chocolate honeycomb). Suitable for a couple or a couple and one other person.

Some more items would be helpful and (additional) comfortable, for example seat cushions for the seats outside, a CD-Player or DVD-Player for entertainment, logs provided for the woodburner would be more comfortable, even against separate payment. All the rest was very nice! Especially views, facilities, really good wifi!

Thank you very much for your review, we are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Coach House Cottage. It is always helpful to have comments about possible additional items for the property: there are now cushions for the outdoor furniture! We have considered a CD player and DVD player but feedback was that most folk use online streaming services . A starter basket of logs is provided and additional bags of logs can be purchased at the local shop in Strete, which is a little bit of hassle for guests but a good opportunity to visit the local shop! Delighted to hear that the wifi was up to scratch! Property Owner

The Coach House is lovely but very tired and in need of some love and care and attention. It was advertised: “Exceptionally well refurbished, it is romantic and elegant. Very special place to stay” In reality this was not the case. Please find constructive feedback below: - Arrived in darkness as the outside lights were not on / operable. Not a good welcome. - Key safe not secured and opened without the use of the code. - Mystery PJs left on back of bathroom door which at first look unnerved us thinking the place had not been made ready to occupy. - kettle did not work effectively due to element is on its way out. - on first view at night, every room looked nice and as presented in the pictures of the property. In daylight however, it became apparent that there was a lack attention to detail in regards to cleaning. I.e layer of dust behind beds, behind and under the bath, lamp shades had cobwebs. -Evidence of damp and mould was present by smell and visual in bathroom and main bedroom. -Towels and bed linen were not of a high quality, especially the bedding as it did not fit the mattress and had to be refitted every day.Towels were worn and harsh on use and all was very disappointing considering the expense related to the booking. Location is amazing, sea views and local amenities was fabulous. Overall, a very disappointing stay as we feel it was not value for money. We would have expected for a romantic break, a welcome pack / hamper of local produce as opposed to a Sainsbury’s Christmas pudding and mince pies and a net of cheap chocolate Brussels sprouts. Photographs can be sent to support.

Thank you for your feedback which we always welcome and for bringing the linen and towels to our attention. We have booked the next few weeks out to review and improve the presentation of the cottage and have since purchased a new kettle as well as sorting out the outside lights. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed the amazing sea views and location. Property Owner

The only thing I found a little difficult was getting on and off the drive as it is rather tight As the drive goes to other property and you need to pull right round the wall the road outside is quite busy and not very wide so if you want to come off your drive and turn right it can be difficult I have no idea but apart from that it was beautiful I can highly recommend a stay at thisBeautiful cottage I can highly recommend a trip to Kingsbridge it is a beautiful place at the end of an estuary and also SalcombeBut my advice is to do the park-and-ride bus parking there is quite difficult also if you going to Dartmouth use the park-and-ride for there as well

  • "Fabulous cottage that benefits from being in an idyllic location, with lots to see, explore and experience in the beautiful Devon countryside."

The only slight downside to our stay in order offer an opportunity for improvement to the cottage owners would be to equal the classy fixtures and fittings, a more modern entertainment system that would benefit the requirements of clientele that now desire/need in this internet age i.e. large screen SMART TV with iplayer / Netflix / NOW TV / Amazon Prime connectivity, rather than a small screen TV with just freeview that was provided. Thankfully, the adequate internet connection provided enabled our laptop to be connected to the TV to act as the medium to watch our favourite programmes and box sets.

  • "The perfect getaway to regroup the mind."

A very well presented property with excellent decor that is close to the beach and SW Coast Path. Strete is a mile or so walk to spend that lazy, Sunday Roast afternoon in the local pub. A local artist, (K. Lightfoot), exhibits her brilliant works there. Failing that, Slapton is equal in distance in the opposite direction. Dartmouth is a bus ride away to explore further, or Kingsbridge might take your fancy. With peace and tranquillity in abundance, you had best be quick to book as we intend to repeat our booking! • "The cottage was hidden by a stone wall with no gates but a difficult parking area, having to be clear of the main drive but not block the entry into cottage."

The garden was untidy and in need of attention. The cottage was not clean, soap scum on both wash basins from previous tablet soap. Dust everywhere, so deep on the rim of the bath you could write in it. My husband dropped a pill and when we saw the dust under all the furniture finding it we were disgusted. I self cater because I have a compromised immune system due to medication, so we thoroughly cleaned the kitchen and bathrooms before we could use them. This wasn’t the holiday I hoped for. Sorry I know it’s actually with another cottage company but for your reputation I feel you should check things more. They even state that if you are not out of the cottage by 10:00 there is a charge as the time is needed to clean for the next tenant, I ask clean! One other point no recycling tou have to find a local recycling centre, need I say more, Sykes you let me down. ***Owner Response*** We were upset to read your feedback as we usually receive such positive reviews. We had noticed the grass in the garden was looking over grown, the gardener will now trim it shorter so it lasts longer between visits. Thank you for taking the time to leave us this feedback, we will take all of your comments on board.

The garden was enchanting. We had our breakfast there everyday. The house was clean but there were quite a lot spiders but they were harmless. Everything was nicely decorated. Over the bridleway we reached the beach in 20 Minuten where the Lime Coffee is. Great coffee and cake.

  • "It's a lovely cottage in a beautiful location and we enjoyed our stay there - though it isn't really convenient for shopping for groceries as the nearest supermarket is some miles away in Totnes or Kingsbridge; nor is it particularly suited as a centre for touring the area generally due to the distance to major roads."

The facilities were good, though one practical suggestion would be to provide a better fridge (one with a freezing compartment and more shelves would have been helpful given the journey required to a supermarket for groceries).

  • "We enjoyed a wonderful and relaxing week in Coach House Cottage."

The property is beautifully furnished and equipped and very comfortable and cosy. So much attention to detail and the provision of flowers, biscuits and milk was a welcome surprise. We arrived on a lovelyl sunny afternoon but by Sunday evening the snow and gales cut off access for a few of days. However the cottage is so cosy it was not a problem, we loved sitting and looking out over the sea and listening to the waves. Enjoyed walks along the beaches at Strete Gate and Blackpool Sands, and also walks across to Slapton and Torcross. Everyone is so friendly. The local shop was useful for emergency supplies and,we really enjoyed the food and the friendliness of the staff at Venus Cafe at Blackpool Sands, and at The Laughing Monk. A beautiful property in a stunning part of the country and we will definitely consider returning. Many thanks to everyone at Helpful Holidays.

The property

This beautiful Grade II listed cottage converted from a 19th century coach house, half a mile from the centre of Strete, set above the A379 between Slapton and Dartmouth.

Exceptionally well refurbished by an experienced designer, it is romantic and elegant accommodation on a stunning coastline.

From the front door, head upstairs to the open plan living space, all light and calm with natural fabrics and views to Start Point and the River Dart estuary.

Due to the age and character of the property please note that the staircase is quite narrow with a curve at the top leading into the sitting room.

The seating area is cosy with a wood burning stove, a lovely place to sit and chat to the cook in the gently curving kitchen area.

The two comfortable bedrooms are downstairs, each individually designed.

You can enjoy the same fabulous views from the garden, which is good sized and enclosed and has a lawn for sunbathing and a patio where you can eat outdoor meals.

Stroll down into Strete to eat out at the restaurant or head into Dartmouth for a choice of seafood eateries and a cinema and trips on boats and the steam railway.

Whether you are a serious hiker or a stroller, the coastal vistas along the South West Coast Path are not to be missed, with blue and golden Blackpool Sands, a secret cove and the crescent of beach and nature reserve at Slapton Sands.

Coach House Cottage is a very special place to stay.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £100.

STRETE

Dartmouth 4.8 miles

Strete is a village looking over Start Bay just south of Dartmouth. The hills and countryside that encircle the village to the west converge on the memorable coastline forming one of the most visually striking images in the South Hams. There is a post office and general store in the village along with a lovely church plus the well renowned Laughing Monk restaurant. There is a small community area where you can picnic and walk your dog with its wildlife section and notable views of Start Bay. A few short miles in either direction brings you to the magical crescent shaped family beach at Blackpool Sands and the three mile stretch of Slapton Sands. Dartmouth lies on the banks of the beautiful River Dart estuary in the popular and picturesque South Hams area of South Devon.
