  • "A very good stay and ideal size so we could invite family over for a meal."

Great location for access to the town and surrounding areas of interest and property very warm for an older type building. No major issues noted - just a very good place and would recommend it to others.

  • "A lovely property, spacious, comfortable and well equipped."

Alison was a delightful host and we particularly appreciated her guiding us round the castle. We would have no hesitation in recommending Castle Barton to visitors to Tiverton looking for a central base. Light sleepers might find the bells from the neighbouring church tower a little disturbing if they are accustomed to nighttime silence but for others they will simply add to the charm of the location.

  • "Met by a lovely lady Alison who warmly greeted us when we arrived ."

We were shown around the delightful house which was well equipped with washing machine, dishwasher T.V etc and comfortable but had been emptied of books and other furnishings due to Covid. This we fully understood and didn`t really detract from the property. We were warned about the church bells which went on for about an hour on Sunday and the practice evening on Tuesday and the 24 hour clock chimes. Wasn`t a problem to us....very much enjoyed them. Not to everybody`s taste. The location is well placed in the middle of Tiverton and close to The Great Western Canal. A short distance from the M5 will serve both Somerset and the South Coast with ease. Would recommend this property but we found the SAT NAV unhelpful for getting around

  • "Was made to feel very welcome on arrival."

Lovely house and gardens. Very spacious, clean and not cluttered. The house is situated within easy access to local amenities and yet is set in peaceful surroundings next to the castle grounds and river. Would definitely return.

  • "This historic house was a pleasure to visit."

The let down is the poor quality garden furnishings and lack of a sun umbrella in 30 degrees of sun. But overall the quaint house and beautiful gardens were a lovely experience. The owner was a charming lady who was very attentive, we were offered free produce from the kitchen garden. Over all we enjoyed it very much and would visit again.

  • "Beautiful spacious period house and very private garden within the castle walls, it has the wow factor."

Alison the owner is a very nice lady, lovely touches ie fresh flowers and cake, she gave us access to the castle and estate gardens which were magnificent, we went in every day. The TV in the living room is small but we got used to it, all in all a fabulous house in an amazing setting and not too far from North or South coast

  • "The house was superb, great location and setting, beautiful view of the church and castle from the house."

Having access to the castle gardens and the river was a wonderful bonus. All the bedrooms are large with large on suite bathrooms. We were a part of 6 and there was plenty of room. The lockable shed was really useful to store all our bikes in. Tiverton is ideally situated in the centre of Devon to explore both the north and south coasts. The owners were excellent. The only improvement I would suggest is that the outdoor table and plastic chairs could more match the beauty of the house. We would love to come back and would happily encourage our friends to book this house.

About the location

Crediton 12 miles; Exeter 14 miles; Taunton 21 miles.

The largest town in Mid Devon, visit Tiverton for echoes of the past including a romantic castle, and horse-drawn barge trips on the idyllic Grand Western Canal. Occupying a strategic position on two rivers, the Exe and the Lowman, brought Tiverton wealth as a flourishing textile town, resulting in many fine buildings. These include the Jacobean Great House of St. George, three medieval almshouses, and the fantastic parish church of St. Peter with its remarkable frieze of merchant vessels with billowing sails. Another famous building is Old Blundells, immortalised by former pupil R.D. Blackmore in his classic Lorna Doone. However, the town's most famous building is beautiful Tiverton Castle, a royal fortress commissioned in 1106 by Henry I. Find out more about Tiverton's rich heritage at award-winning Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life, with 14 galleries of exhibits including the Tivvy Bumper GWR locomotive.
