  • "WOW, what a great place."

.. The owners (Bob & Izzy) greeted us on arrival and went through everything... Milk and eggs in the fridge waiting for us. The cottage was kitted out with everything you need and quality of utensils / crockery etc... was superb. The whole place was spotless. Lovely, quiet location with a nice pub circa 1 mile away. I would definitely recommend if you are looking for a relaxing and peaceful retreat...

  • "Lovely and comfortable, well furnished and equipped holiday home - suited us perfectly as a family with 2 teenage boys."

Very peaceful with no passing traffic, so a good retreat at the end of days out. The Woodshed overlooked owners’ garden (which you can use too - benches, washing line, bbq area) and countryside. Easy access with car to East Devon area and more. Friendly owners on hand to help with places to go.

  • "The woodshed is an amazing place, so peaceful and tranquil with heavenly views across the rolling Devonshire hills and patchwork fields ."

The property is small but incredibly well equipped, very comfortable beds, cosy lounge and all beautifully handcrafted. The only problem we had seems to be a little misunderstanding with the garden which I was told was dog friendly and fully enclosed, not quite the case if you have a dog with a tendency to squeeze through hedges after rabbits or likes to chase chickens!! A fabulous place for a couple, not much in the village but Exeter only a few miles away. Second bedroom very small but probably well suited to younger children. Local pub was closed when we visited but looked beautiful, and Bob and Issy have put together a fantastic and comprehensive guide to Devon, pubs, beaches, attractions for walkers, children etc. Absolutely idyllic.

The only sounds are birdsong and clucking chickens in the garden. Our hosts were very kind, helpful and welcoming, leaving us milk, flowers and a bottle of wine. All were much appreciated and our week was was a great, success. We can thoroughly recommend this cottage to get away from it all and relax.

It overlooks gorgeous countryside and you can go for walks direct from the front door. The balcony is lovely and inside is very clean and cosy. It's hard to believe you're only a few miles from Exeter because it's so peaceful. Pretty garden to sit out in and friendly owners. Loads to do in the area.

The property

This cottage has been converted from the end of the owner's oak-framed barn at the end of a no through lane on the edge of Upton Pyne.

With lovely views over the Exe Valley as far as the Killerton estate, this is a great base for anyone in need of some rest and relaxation in beautiful surroundings.

Take a couple of steps up into the spacious kitchen, well equipped with a dining area, then head on upstairs to your fabulous airy sitting room under the eaves with its elm floor and cosy wood burning stove.

On a sunny day, open the French windows to the balcony where you can admire those views over Devon countryside.

A couple of steps take you down to the two bedrooms sharing a smart family shower room.

Wander down the gravel path to your outdoor seating area where you can eat alfresco, or you are welcome to enjoy the owners’ garden where hens and cats roam free.

For a refreshing drink, a footpath will lead you to a good pub in less than a mile.

The National Trust house and garden at Killerton are spectacular, or head to Dartmoor to admire some natural beauty.

The coast is within easy reach at Exmouth or Dawlish, as well as the bright lights of the cathedral city of Exeter.

The Woodshed is in a brilliant central location for coast, countryside and city or for simply chilling out.

About the location

UPTON PYNE

Exeter is a lively city in south Devon with a magnificent cathedral, historic quayside area with artisan shops and cafes, guided tours of the maze of underground passages and a wealth of bars, shops and restaurants. There is a good choice of excellent museums tracing the city’s lengthy history including an interesting medieval building The Tucker’s Hall, built for the Company of Weavers, Tuckers and Shearman which houses exceptional carved panelling, rare silver and a 4 feet long pair of fulling shears. Nearby Parliament Street claims to be the world’s narrowest street – less than 25 inches at its narrowest. The gatehouse and tower of Rougemont castle still stand in the city, surrounded by Rougemont gardens with a backdrop of Roman wall ruins - a tranquil haven. Exeter’s one time importance as a port is reflected in the Custom House, now the centrepiece of the Quayside, a fascinating complex of antique shops and cafes. Within a 15 minute drive of the city, there are some fabulous beaches at Sidmouth and Exmouth, and the start of the 95 mile stretch of Jurassic Coast, all of which provide ample opportunities for relaxation, sport and exploration. Exeter is an ideal south Devon base from which to explore pretty countryside and Heritage Coast.
