  • "We had a lovely week visiting family and friends in a beautiful area of Devon."

We did some nice walks too and really enjoyed being in Wiggington. We had a very busy week as it turned out but the weather was kind the rain was mainly at night. The only problem we encountered was the Wi-Fi didn’t let my husband attend a meeting on line one weekday evening but it worked mostly okay the rest of our week. We really enjoyed our week.

  • "You will love Charlston; a very comfortable apartment adjoining the owners home, with your own planted garden and sunny paved sitting-out area."

The property is clear and tidy, as well as being fully equipped. The perfect place to relax in. Annie and Terry are friendly but do not encroach on your holiday experience. Having used holiday lets for nearly two decades, Charlston would rated in our top ten.

  • "The cottage is very nice."

It is attached to the owner's property. Has a nice lounge/kitchen area, main bedroom is lovely, second bedroom has bunkbeds, and a lovely garden. It is conveniently located and close to Sidmouth and other local places in south Devon. Our only slight negative with this property is that it is not possible to control the central heating from within the property; it can only be switched on by the owner. Hence if the weather is a little cool, or as in our case in September we had a very wet spell of rainy weather although the cottage was warm enough, we found it difficult to dry our towels. The owner was helpful in providing extra towels and drying frames but refused to switch on the central heating. We would suggest the owner fits an electrically heated towel rail in the bathroom, and an extractor fan.

  • "This is a lovely well maintained and spotlessly clean property."

The lovely welcome gift of tea, coffee, sugar, milk, juice and biscuits were a great surprise on arrival as it allowed us to have a drink after our long journey. Annie came to introduce herself to us, which was lovely. We used this as a base to explore the area and had a great week away. Would highly recommend this property for anyone with young children.

  • "As a family of 4,we highly recommend this property!"

It has a huge driveway, beautiful garden- half grass & a patio with table & chairs, a little barbecue & loads of lovely lavender & flowers. The property is all on 1 floor, the owners live on one side of it & use the upstairs. Annie popped round to see is the 1st evening just to say hello & we saw her on the last day. She was very friendly and helpful & very much left us to come & go as we please. It was nice for us as we like our privacy and are quite happy to be left alone but we knew they were there to help us with anything. We had no issues with anything in the property and were very sad to go! The area surrounding was absolutely perfect for us. Loads of nature reserves, walks, beaches all so close by car. The village of ottery St Mary was brilliant, it had a lovely play park that we went to every day. It had a sainsbury's, bakery, takeaways & a wonderful fruit & veg shop that we loved! We cooked every day and had everything we needed. Comfortable beds & good shower & bath. Couldn't recommend enough!

  • "We had a lovely week at Charlston, the property was everything we could have wanted and was so homely, relaxing and cool, which was nice as we were lucky to have an amazing week weatherwise and were able to eat every meal on the quiet patio."

Annie and Terry were lovely hosts, always there but we were left to ourselves unless we approached them, even Meg their delightful Springer spaniel was trained not to come over to the guest's side of the property unless approached!! Would certainly recommend for a couple, or young family, plenty of space inside and the garden.

Excellent accommodation - would recomend it to any couple desiring a peaceful stay away from the maddening crowds - relatively easy to locate - friendly owners who made our stay so enjoyable (just wish the friends who live closeby had purchased this place when they were considering moving into the area some thirty years ago - would stress it is ideal for a couple, even pensioners like ourselves, and those with two young children, facilities ideal and owners put themselves out by providing all that was necessary for our stay - even including freshly laid eggs - the friendly woofie greeted us with a wag from his tail -

  • "We enjoyed a three night stay with our two children and 3 and 1."

The weather was very autumnal, blustery and wet and the accommodation was a warm and cosy place to return to after exploring the local beaches. It is only a ten minute drive from coast so perfect if travelling with small ones! Although described as a ‘cottage’ the accommodation is more like a flat. (My 3 year old was mystified by the lack of stairs) The garden is very pretty, as is the view of thatched roofs but if you’re looking for cottage charm inside you may be disappointed. We did not see the owners but a sweet little pack of tea biscuits and juice for the children was left and they were quick to respond to text message regarding arrival time. All in all it was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed for a few days.

There was a private sunny patio as well as lawn surrounded by flowers. Inside was clean, spacious and cosy, rather than contemporary. Beds very comfortable including the bunk bed for an adult. Board games and books available but preferred to relax on the patio listening to the bird song and looking at the pretty surroundings.

  • "Lovely quiet place to stay."

Central heating is controlled by the owner's main house and comes on 1 hour 7.30am to 8.30am, and 6.00pm to 7.00pm. This is a good arrangement unless, like us, you get soaking wet and cold and arrive back to the house around 4.30pm and the heating is off. There is a free standing electric fire which we used once, and a wall mounted electric fire which we also used on the same occasion. But Sykes rep. had informed us that the central heating control was in the holiday let and therefore controlled by us, but it wasn't. For my own convenience with a handicapped daughter who could not be left alone whilst loading and unloading the car, it was important to get the car close to the entrance door. I was told this was possible, but this is not possible as the car is parked on stone chippings, in front of the house, but about 30 metres from the entrance door and round the corner, out of sight of the entrance door. This would not be a problem for most people.

The property

Set in the little hamlet of Wiggaton, amid rolling farmland and lush woods is Charlston, a nicely presented ground floor apartment, attached to the friendly owners home and next to the local church.

One mile away, the popular market town of Ottery St Mary, famed for its annual November 5th 'Tar Barrels' celebration, sits beside the River Otter - home to a newly populated resident beaver colony.

Here you'll find interesting shops, cafes, and a large garden nursery.

Charlston is within easy reach of the stunning Jurassic Coast and just a short drive to the cathedral city of Exeter, making it the perfect base for exploring the beautiful East Devon countryside.

All on one level the apartment has a large, sunny, open plan lounge/kitchen/diner with glazed doors looking over your own pristine flower filled garden and the adjacent church.

The large master double bedroom also enjoys views over the garden and is adjacent to the newly fitted, smart family bathroom.

The smaller bunk room with en- suite shower room is ideal for youngsters or those who are young at heart.
