  • "This was a beautifully peaceful place to be."

The cottage is well appointed with a very efficient and easy to use central heating system. Walked upto Dunkery Beacon and explored Dunster Castle. The village shop sells delicious quiches. Minehead is only 10 minutes away if you need more provisions.

Thank you very much for your feedback. We love the location of the cosy cottage in this peaceful village, and yet it is very accessible with a car to the amenities of Dunster, Minehead, with all of the Exmoor National Park area on the doorstep Property Owner

  • "The location and garden are lovely."

Any guests need to be aware of lots of steep steps in the cottage. Also be aware of very narrow lanes to the cottage as we had bike on back of car. Very remote no pub and little local shop only opens in the morning. Otherwise idyllic with big dining kitchen and very modern bathrooms. When we contacted the hosts they were very quick to respond.

Thank you for your helpful feedback. The village shop also runs a bar on a Friday 5pm - 9pm, and Saturdays in the Summer. The nearest pubs are the Lion Inn at Timberscombe, and several in Dunster including the Luttrell Arms which has a commanding view of Dunster Castle from the garden. Castle Coffee House is highly recommended Property Owner

  • "We very much enjoyed our stay here; Wootton Courtenay was ideally situated for exploring both town and country, and the cottage itself was well-appointed and comfortable with a large, bright kitchen looking on to a well kept and private garden."

As you would expect in an older property there are steps and low ceilings which may not suit every situation, but at 6' 5" I still managed to shower and manoeuvre, and we also noted that a downstairs bedroom had been added. A beautiful spot!

Thank you for your feedback and helpful comments. We appreciate your comments about suitability for all, and are delighted you share our enthusiasm for the cottage and the surrounding area! The garden bedroom downstairs is not currently part of the offering to guests , however in the future with further improvements to bathroom facilities we may be able to include this. Property Owner

  • "We have stayed in many cottages and will always give a positive review and recommend the cottage, if deserved."

This cottage should be advertised as unsuitable for anyone with the slightest mobility issue. Every room is accessed via steps. The garden is particularly difficult, with several steps from the kitchen and more to reach the garden. The stairs are unsafe, when decending,. There are inadequate rails to enable a safe decent. My friend fell from the steps into the upstairs bathroom, and could have been seriously injured. There was no information regarding when the bins would be collected, WiFi was also not left for us to access. We had to email the owner. Also, there wasn't a visitors book for us to record our issues. We were relieved to leave the cottage, without an injury. I am of working age and walk in the Lake District regularly and I was cautious of the number of levels in this property. I do not write this review with any malice, merely to deter those who might, like us, find this property unsuitable.

Dear Lesley Thank you for your review. We agree with your thoughts about the unsuitability of our cottage for elderly people or people with significant mobility problems. It is a very old cottage and, although modernised, the levels of most of the rooms necessitate a couple of steps up or down, which are visible in the photos posted on the booking website. We have made this more explicit in the booking description. Unfortunately, we were only made aware that your friend was aged 90yrs the evening before your arrival. As you know, we are happy for our guests to contact us, and did offer you to let us know if your friend found the staircase a major problem when you arrived as another solution could have been found either by us or through the Sykes office. We are sorry to hear that your friend fell on the two steps into the bathroom and pleased there was no serious injury. We did notice that the bracket to the safety glass of the shower had been dislodged, and needed to be rectified. It is always helpful for those that follow if guests report any losses or breakages. Although the council collects recycling on a Tuesday, we have a private arrangement so that guests arrive and depart with a ‘clean slate’. It is appreciated if the recycling can be separated as indicated on the label on the recycling boxes. The wi-fi password is on the rear of the router in the kitchen, and we have added this to the house manual 2023, and will consider your suggestion of a visitors book in the cottage. Kind regards Property Owner

  • "A beautiful cottage, but due to the wet weather I left earlier than planed."

Unfortunately I couldn't get the heating on to the towel rail or the radiators so my shower towel and my clothes remained wet. Sorry but I did follow the instructions. Sorry but I did leave my loaf of bread in the bread container. Thanks Alan Casey

Dear Alan Thank you for the 94% ! Sorry to hear you had one of the wetter weeks. The central heating and towel rail are very efficient, and we would have been pleased to have guided you through the switching programmes through contacting us by phone or email. Unfortunately we were not aware of your plight. I hope this will not deter you from coming again, and we would be happy to help.I will review the instructions in the house manual. Contacting the Sykes Cottages office is another way to contact us if there is a problem. Property Owner
