The property

Sheafhayne Manor is a spectacular Grade II listed Elizabethan manor house a mile from Yarcombe.

Once a medieval hall house and Francis Drake's shooting lodge, it is full of history and comfort and makes a remarkable destination for groups of friends and family.

From the moment you step through the ancient oak door into the panelled hall, you will be struck by the character of the house.

The drawing room, with its wood burning stove, is a cosy place to gather, or chat around the breakfast table in the well equipped kitchen in true country style whilst the children have fun in the playroom next door.

This is true Downton style living, with a larder and butler's pantry off the kitchen and a huge long table for 24 in the banqueting dining room where dinners will be sociable and leisurely.

After dinner, head through to the massive billiard room with its William Morris wallpaper, huge fireplace and full size billiard table.

You will find one handy downstairs twin bedroom, with the other ten bedrooms accessed up four staircases, all en suite except two which share a shower room.

All have individual style and interesting features.

This is a place to have fun and find freedom, with a 2,500 estate which you are welcome to visit and its own big garden with an orchard, a stream, a croquet lawn and a sheltered sunken garden, as well as an enclosed courtyard with barbecue and children's toys.

Whatever the weather, there is entertainment to be found in the vast games room where you can play pool, table tennis, air hockey and table football.

You will probably not want to venture far from this idyll, but if you do you will find the pub at nearby Howley is excellent, and nearby Chard and the historic old lace town of Honiton of Honiton have all the usual amenities.

There are pretty golden villages and National Trust houses and gardens to visit and the Jurassic Coast is within 20 miles at picturesque spots such as Lyme Regis, Seaton, Beer and Sidmouth.

Sheafhayne Manor is a unique and very special place for a memorable gathering.

About the location

Situated in the heart of the Blackdown Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Devon/Somerset border lies the village of Yarcombe, just 7 miles from Honiton. Yarcombe's village centre is small with its historical Norman church, old inn with monastical roots, village hall and cluster of houses, but its many outlying farms and hamlets make Yarcombe a large parish with a very active community. in Devon . With wonderful fields, hedgerows, woodlands and isolated farmsteads this is rural living at its best.
