“My family and I had a brilliant stay at Whytings and would highly recommend for huge family gatherings for this great price.”

From the views, location and space, we were very happy with what Whytings had to offer. In total there were 18 of us, including 2 small children. The owners were really friendly, welcoming and also very relaxed. As we stayed on the weekend, we really appreciated that we didn't have to leave the property on the Sunday to a little later and did not have a strict check out process. LOCATION: Situated in the most beautiful surroundings withe lovely fields and views. What is great is that its a 5 minute drive to a large Tesco, which came in very handy over the course of the weekend. Lyme Regis main town is about a 10 minute drive, which again is a lovely day out. . We also travelled about 1 hour to Durdle Door and this was a perfect day out (highly recommend). Of course, it is NECESSARY that take cars as nothing is really in walking distance FACILITIES & SPACE: The property had a lot of space and it was great for us as there were en suites to every room bar the one down stairs. The tables were also perfect and fitted all 18 of us around, so this was great for meals. However, our only negative is that although the property sleeps 20 people, the kitchen area really isn't big enough for that many people. The ovens are also not that great, so I think this would be our only thing that would need improving. CLEANLINESS: It was perfect for us as we had young children. Clean bedding and towels were provided, which was great. They could do with some new seating as they look a little old. Apart from that we loved it. Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend for family stays - we had so much fun and would love to return.
“We had a really lovely stay at this cottage.”
It was spacious, clean and fresh. Many thanks. Beautiful views and location.
“First came to Whytings 7 years ago.”
Returned for a family get together. Plenty of room for all 17 of us, three generations ranging in age from 19yrs to 70. The one snag in this modern age was the lack of WiFi which was a problem for the five university students attempting to finish projects, but to be fair, wifi was not mentioned in the blurb. On the whole, very good
“Having read some of the reviews, we were a bit worried as some of them were quite harsh.”
When we got to the place everyone was really positively surprised and complimentary about our choice of venue. As other people have stated the decor is a bit dated, but everyone said how comfortable the sofas and beds were, how good the bathrooms and showers were and we all thought that it was reasonably clean - it just felt homely and was great for our Christmas meet up. All of us (11 adults and a toddler) had a great stay, enjoyed ourselves and are definitely thinking about coming back for our Christmas get together this year.
“Big but.....needs TLC & a good clean”
We were a party of 12 and we stayed for a week in August. Our reception was warm and included fresh eggs from the farm chickens. The linen and towels are of good quality and there is plenty of hot water for showers. The ground floor is dedicated to two large matching tables that seat 14 and a lot of leather settees. Great for a communal night in! The property is great for Lyme Regis and a stones throw from River Cottage (book well ahead if you want to go there). However you do need a car no matter what anyone says as it is just too far and hilly to walk to pubs and shops. The downside is there was no wifi, and it really needs a good clean from top to toe. The upstairs windows were very dirty, some hot water taps did not work (which we reported) and 50% of the showers had no wall fittings so you had to hold the shower yourself. There are no smoke alarms in the kitchen area and the ovens need a really good clean. The front door handle doesn't work. We had a toddler so had to move settees to retrieve things that he threw under them and it was clear from the things we found that they had not been moved in a long time. However overall we enjoyed our stay. It's hard to find properties with lots of ensuite rooms that are pet friendly. With some investment and TLC this could be a super place to stay.
“Difficult to find instructions wrong otherwise we all had a very enjoyable stay.”
“Brilliant family weekend”
We had our wedding party here extending the celebration over the weekend and the living areas, dining area and paddock, were perfect for entertaining. The bedrooms were great sizes for the whole party (there were 18 of us) and everyone was sad to leave. Great place to stay for a large family party in a fantastic location. If you go I'd advise to look out for the sign to Hartgrove Hill Farm on the way in rather than Whytings as a few of our party got lost on the way - but that might just be us.
We arrived after a 8 hour journey from Chester (we did go the long way down tho!) Our friends had already arrived and had put their stuff away / were already cooking the first meal. We found our bedrooms and put our stuff away. The house could be changed and updated but for the price that we paid then it was pretty good value for 14 of us! For example - about how the house is laid out is fine when you walk in as you have the magnificent table in the middle of the room but the sofas are quite old and could have done with being replaced with new ones. The beds in our room were ok but were very creaky and not amazingly comfortable - again could be updated for better ones. Getting to Lyme Regis was very easy - some of us walked and some drove. The walk took about 45 minutes but we did have one wrong turn! Saturday night we went to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's Restaurant in Axminster which I highly recommend! The other reviews for Whytings are wrong - the place is old and a bit battered but its a lot better than what I was expecting to walk into. The place is clean and tidy - the beds are a bit old but the sheets were all ok to sleep on. I recommend taking an extra pillow or two though if you hate sleeping flat! Not sure what else to put as its a place you have to discover for yourself :) Enjoy!
“Fine - very practical, if not particularly well finished”
I agree with most of the comments made by others re The Whytings. In short - it's very practical, has everything a large group needs, and easily accommodates a large group (we were 12 adults (5 couples) and 3 babies, but the property could have fitted more if needed - there are a couple of 'family rooms'). But, it looks tired. Positives: Huge dining table. Huge lounge area. Loads of parking. 8 bedrooms (though one of those is a through-bedroom - so bear that in mind if you are booking for 8 couples thinking you'll each have a private bedroom!). Plenty of pots and pans and crockery. 6x en-suite bedrooms (through-bedroom, plus downstairs bedroom, are not en-suite). Negatives: Lots of little (largely cosmetic) issues - for example the cutlery drawer-front was falling off, one of the toilet-roll holders was hanging off the wall). The outside paddock area is across the (scruffy) parking area. Strange 'old' smell upstairs. Bedroom furniture (other than beds - ie. wardrobes, sofa in family bedroom, etc.) all very old - the kind of stuff you would think not good enough to give to a charity shop. One of the (two) ovens is hopeless. The bin / recycling area is disgusting and really makes the yard look shabby. There was WiFi, but only in one corner of the house, and even then it was patchy for most of us. No bath, Though there is a plastic baby bath provided, I gather the whole baby bathing thing is far harder without an actual bath. Other thoughts: Though in a way the two small kitchens arrangement works well, they're both very enclosed. A nice open kitchen would be much better when the rest of the house is clearly suited to a large group. As of April/May 2014, there are TWO front door keys and ONE back door key. The second front door key is on the same keyring as the back door. We had no issues locking the door. The garden furniture does exist and is in good condition. The external photos are very misleading. The aspect for the main photo must have been taken from the next-door field full which is of sheep, and is actually of the smaller cottage attached to The Whytings. I met the owner, Hugh, who seemed honest and helpful, and quite open to feedback - though he was slow to respond to our original issue. Summary: The Whytings is a good option, especially if you have young children and you wouldn't want to be worrying about brand new carpets etc., but not the 'premium' option that it's price suggests.
“South Coast in the rain”
Our week in Uplyme was alate booking. The proprerty was excellent and accommodated three family groups with ease. The games room and the sorounding farmland was bonus. Great location for the south coast beachs and day trip to Eden Project(get there early and stay the whole day to make the most of it). Found a few vegetrain cafes/restaurants. Unique bakery and pizza restauraent in Lyme Regis. The property owners need to provide more info on local attractions - not knowing the area well meant we awsted alot of time working out what to do. Got in a decent forest walk. Oh by the way, it rained all week!
“Fantastic house for parties”
We had a fantastic time at Whitings - the large dining table was great for meals together, although the kitchens (although 2) were quite small. That said cooking for 18 people was managable. There is a lovely pub approx 3 miles away which makes for a great country walk. There was plenty of space for everyone inside and out and I would recommend to any young group.
