Thank you very much to hosts Mike and Ruth for the warm welcome which included yummy chocolate cake and home grown flowers.

The property

Winscombe 1.8 miles.

Cheddar 5 miles.

This wonderful Grade II listed detached cottage with charm and character is located amongst two acres of grounds in the peaceful hamlet of Barton, surrounded by the Mendip Hill, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, less than two miles from the large village of Winscombe.

Originally the farmhouse kitchen, The Bakehouse offers a real romantic retreat with a beamed first floor bedroom leading to an en-suite shower room.

Downstairs, prepare dinner in the modern kitchen before you sit back and relax in front of the woodburning stove which is housed in a stone inglenook fireplace.

Outside a private decked area allows you to enjoy a morning coffee or an early evening bottle of wine whilst looking out over the beautiful Loxton Valley.

You get the best of both worlds here with an abundance of tranquil countryside on your doorstep and a number of attractions within easy reach.

Winscombe is a convenient starting point for exploring the area with its independent shops, tea rooms and pub, with the sandy beach at Burnham-on-Sea, the stunning Cheddar gorge and caves and the cities of Bath, Wells and Bristol all being within driving distance.

A welcoming romantic retreat for exploring all that Somerset has to offer.

About the location

Cheddar 4 miles; Burnham-on-Sea 10 miles.

Winscombe is a large village in North Somerset and makes a superb base for exploring the surrounding countryside and coastline. The village is located in the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is well-served by a selection of shops and cafes. Head to the coast and discover Burnham-on-Sea with its seven miles of unspoilt sandy beaches, sailing, fishing and donkey rides, as well as Burnham and Barrow Championship Golf Course. The nearby traditional seaside town of Weston-super-Mare offers awarding-winning sandy beaches, restaurants and shops, as well as the Playhouse, Winter Gardens and the Grand Pier offering a year-round programme of shows, musicals and fairs. Drive five miles inland to Cheddar, on the edge of the Mendip Hills and renowned for Cheddar Gorge, the largest gorge in Britain, which includes several show caves such as Gough’s Cave, through which Britain’s biggest underground river runs. Cyclists will enjoy the picturesque paths that cross the Somerset Levels, while Wells, the country’s smallest city, with its beautiful cathedral, and Glastonbury Tor, with its connections to King Arthur are both nearby. A great holiday destination for those wishing to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
