We have used Sykes cottages many many times over the years and been very satisfied, however this was our flagship stay. From the farm tour and cup of tea on arrival, the fantastic elevated balcony near the tree tops, the beautifully decorated and furnished rooms and the excellent equipment and fitments throughout. We certainly plan to return, mark,Jo, ady and ang.

It’s even better than it looks in the photos and our grandchildren really appreciated Martin spending time to tell them all about the farm animals. It was in the perfect location for us- in the countryside but easy access to Yeovil. Hopefully we will be back!

We found the holiday property after shopping locally at the convenient Tesco's. Parking is right by the front door. The keypad was easy to use, and we settled in quickly. It was, clean, spacious and very comfortable. Great showers. We found lots of things to do locally, like the nice walk to Yeovil Country park and enjoyed many of the NT properties. Lovely old samplers at Montecue, fantastic day at Brownsea Island and the steep walk-up Glastonbury Tor. The views are fantastic. A memorable week, thank you so much. :) Reviewed by Sally October 2022

  • "Lovely property, very tastefully renovated."

Great place for relaxing. Lovely log burner for cosy nights in. Very comfy pocket sprung beds. Lovely outlook from the deck with lots of wildlife to watch. Very helpfull hosts gave us eggs from their chickens. Parking right by front door. No steps and very accessible to anyone who has mobility issues. Only slight downside was the TV as it has no aerial so you need netfix/iPlayer etc accounts and can't just watch normal live tv, so, I think this should be made clear in the description. I guess not really an issue for younger people as they watch everything online now anyway. We just watched films in the evening. Will be recommending the Milking Barn to others and maybe return one day.

  • "We had a lovely week at The Milking Barn."

The property was clean and well equipped, with a spacious and airy living/dining space, and the decking area is private and relaxing. We cooked a lot and found the kitchen very user friendly. The only slight negative about the barn, for us, was that the master bedroom is a 4'6" double and therefore on the small side for two adults in the heatwave conditions, so my husband and I had the twin room, which whilst adequate, is very small and has no storage. However it didn't spoil our holiday in any way. Although we didn't see the owners they were very quick to respond by text to my enquiries and very helpful. The barn is in a very convenient spot close to Yeovil and the main routes into Dorset, yet in a pleasant and quiet location. Friendly farm cats too! All in all we really enjoyed the stay.

There is a part of the Sykes website that gives the opportunity to request a change of dates. We asked to move our holiday to later on in the year. This was denied. Yes,Insurance would have solved this problem. We are so incredibly grateful to the donor’s family, for the skills of surgeons and the kind and caring nursing staff.

The country park is a short walk away over fields. We booked the Milking Barn for the two of us and found it very spacious and comfortable. Parking right by the door. Ashley was a great host, always available for queries but never intrusive. We sampled the farms eggs and beef, both excellent. The barn is nicely furnished, clean and comfortable with a pleasant outlook and private decking, patio and lawn area. Lots to do and see in the area close by, the Fleet air museum is well worth a visit. Numerous National Trust properties also. Highly recommend this property and would be happy to return. Thank you Ashley for making our stay relaxing.

Easy parking, secluded garden decking, birds singing and in the evening very quiet. The accomodation was comfortable and well appointed, Although we did not cook it looked as though there was everything needed in the kitchen. The owner who was on site was very helpful, literally went the extra mile by taking my wife to the train station on the morning of our departure.

But we felt we had been really looked after, when we needed wood for the fire, even though the owner was at the hospital with his wife, as she gave birth to their first child, he gave his Fathers mobile number to us and we received the wood that day without charge. Very clean and well presented. We were pleased to find that we could walk across the fields on a public footpath to the Yeovil Country Park. The surrounding countryside is attractive. We stayed as a family group of three adults and we used the second bedroom as a twin room. We felt that the second bedroom would be more suitable for children than adults (no storage or a mirror). The accommodation is spotless, has everything you need for a perfect staycation and the host Ashley couldn’t have done more to make us feel welcome and comfortable and if ever we needed anything he would provide it straight away. There are only 2 other holiday lets onsite, so it is quiet and very peaceful- we actually only ever saw Ashley coming and going about his day. On the last day be bought some steak from his farm and had a BBQ, it was delicious! Ashley also provided us with a large basket of wood and every night we would light a fire and play card games. Placed on a working farm, there are plenty of fields and walks within the area to explore. The nearest supermarkets are a 5 minute drive in each direction and the High St and local town centre with shops & restaurants are also very close by, there are also Cider and a Buffalo farm a short drive away where you can purchase local produce. There are many beaches and sightseeing spots all within a 45 minute drive. We visited, The Tor at Glastonbury, The Cheddar Gorge and went shopping at Clark’s village. We also went to West Bay, Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Weymouth Bay, Portland Bill as well as Durdle Door and Ludworth Cove beaches where the boys were able to hire kayaks, paddle boards and pedalos. Again these were all with 45 minutes drive from the accommodation. I can’t recommend the Milking barn enough, the location is perfect to feel you are away from the hustle and bustle of the city but it is close enough to seek adventure! Thank you Ashley!

  • "Unfortunately this property had inadequate heating for the time of year the guests had no control over the timing which would come on early in the morning and afternoon for very short period."

Admittedly it had a log burner but fuel was at an extra cost and not everyone wants or knows how to deal with one. The second bedroom had no storage facilities and the bed was against the wall with no room around it, this room was only suitable for a single or bunk beds this would have enabled the room to accommodate some storage. On a positive note the property was clean with a good supply of hot water.

Dear Mrs Pendleton We are sorry to hear that the property failed to meet expectations. We apologise that the heating was not working properly during your stay, unfortunately with any holiday let there can be small day to day issues. The heating is of major importance to anyone's stay at any holiday let, one of our selling points is offering underfloor heating and we again apologise that you were not able to get to the use these benefits. In regards to one of your comments, yes it is true that the heating system is in a locked cupboard we think that it is completely reasonable to have the controls and boiler system locked away from guests, this insures that the system stays constant for every guest. With the boiler issue after you had left we went in and found a fault, this does happen and is not in our control. This issue was a 30 second fix that could and would have been resolved if we had have known there was an issue, unfortunately we can not help resolve issues if the issues are not made known to us. I have personally taken a stance that I allow guests to enjoy a their stay, free from interruption and most guest appreciate this. When this property is booked, every guest calls us before arrival to get the key code, this in turn allows us the greet you over the phone, where during this phone call I stress that we live on site and we are available 24 hour hours a day to help with any issues that may occur. We also leave contact information in the Milking Barn for both myself and my father which would easily be found if needed. After your arrival we did not have any correspondence from you about your stay, we were working close by on a number of occasions when you were either departing or arriving back to the Milking Barn in which case your concerns could have been easily raised with us in person and dealt with accordingly. This did not happen which led us to believe that everything was fine with your stay. The second bedroom is as advertised on Sykes, we appreciate your comment but the layout of the room is clearly advertised. Property Owner

Owners had thought of everything. The speck was very high for a self catering ‘cottage’. Owners were on sight but not intrusive, they were very helpful. Weather while we were there was almost constant rain but coming back to the Milking Barn was a treat, it was always warm and cosy from the underfloor heating and it had the added bonus of a wood burning stove, it was not really needed for the heat but was so relaxing. Great location for exploring. We loved it so much we had booked the Milking Barn again before our holiday had even ended. I could not recommend more highly. Certainly as someone who is used to self catering, I believe we have found a little ‘gem’ here.
