  • "We paid a large sum of money for our 4 night 3 day holiday and sadly the service we received from Sykes Cottages and Dream Cottages did not reflect the amount of money paid or the level of customer service expected."

We have a number of complaints to register: 1. On entering the cottage we were hit by an overwhelming stench of dog. This heavy, dense stench permeated throughout the cottage but mainly downstairs. We have hired holiday houses many times that advertised that dogs could stay but we have never experienced such an unpleasant dog smell before in a property. 2. On unpacking our food we discovered that the fridge had been turned off and the internal light did not work. We have no idea why the cleaners turned the fridge off and why they did not realise that the fridge was turned off when they put the welcome pint of milk into the fridge. Dave, the property manager, brought a temporary fridge over to store our food whilst we waited to see if the original fridge would work. On our departure day we received a phone call from 01305 789000 with a message from a woman who did not leave her name asking us how we wanted our tabletop fridge returned to us. The woman did not leave her name or the company name. We wonder if your staff communicate to each other. 3. On using the cottage china and cooking utensils we encountered a large number of plates, bowls, cutlery, glasses, mugs and saucepans that were absolutely filthy. They were covered in encrusted food matter. They were unusable. We rang Sykes and spoke with Anna about the cleaning situation and agreed that the cleaners would return the following day between 11am/4pm to clean these utensils. The keys were left for them in the key safe. At no time did Anna give us an apology. The cleaners never appeared. We have photos of some of the filthy items. 4. On making our booking with Sykes I saw there were pictures of a log burner in the cottage and I asked the agent if logs were provided and she told me that I had to bring my own. I bought several bags of logs and fire lighters etc to use and on arrival discovered that the wood burner is in fact a gas fire. I was given incorrect advice which left me out of pocket. The Sykes employee did not check the details of the property. 5. There were no instructions on how to use the cooker or microwave. The cottage file stated " Full instruction manuals can be found in the cabinet under the TV, located in the sitting room". This was not the case, there were no instructions provided. 6. We found various items left behind down the sides of the chairs and the sofa eg. comb and wrappers. We loved the cottage but feel sorry for the owners who have a great cottage but are let down by the booking company Sykes and the cleaning company Dreams.

  • "No banisters ( I could only climb stairs on hands and knees) and could not access bath or shower with high sides, no grab rail or slip mat."

Owner, on request, provided mat which was then safer for wife to use. Gas fire problematic. Owner, on request, provided instructions and Susy visited and she and my wife developed expertise to work it. No light in little fridge or over magnificent gas hob. Bottle of milk a welcome and some nice china and utensils but but a bit short on domestic items, eg soap, kitchen paper, fly whisk. Central heating did not come on but Susy brought over an electric blow heater. No instructions for microwave. Susy very responsive and concerned over over cries of distress and did what she could. Particular thanks to her for lending me a walking stick. Poppet our poodle enjoyed her treats and dog friendly reception.

  • "As a state registered nurse I was surprised to be told not to remove pillow and mattress covers on leaving as I am sure in the current cleaning process to guard against COVID-19 these should surely be changed after each change over."

Please reply to my concern regarding this matter.

  • "This delightful cottage didn’t disappoint, situated down a quiet road of similar properties."

It is well equipped for all your holiday needs, comfortable and surprisingly spacious for a two bed property. A lovely welcome basket of milk, biscuits, jam and Elderflower drink on arrival. The bedrooms had plenty of storage room, with very comfy beds. The kitchen/diner has everything required for self catering. The lounge is centred around a wood burner (not required on this holiday), with a TV. The accommodation was spotless, as was the bedding and towels. There is as small outside area to eat out. The Hostess was amazing, the hot water didn’t work on arrival and a plumber was arranged within hours, we even received two bottles of wine from Suzy for our inconvenience. The location of the cottage is perfect for exploring Weymouth and the surrounding places of interest. The Wishing Well Cafe just two minutes down the road serves wonderful food, well worth a visit. Highly recommend Suzy and the Wishing Well Cottage.

  • "Cottage exactly as described, and completely met with our expectations based on the description of the property."

Information provided at the cottage was useful and the welcome kitchen items on arrival were very well received. We did have a slight issue with the wifi connection on our last day but it had worked with no issues leading up to it. I suspect it was due to the poor weather experienced in the night before.

Perfect for three plus dog. Very well equipped. Good location to be able to explore the Dorset coast without getting caught up in too much traffic. Plenty of lovely places to eat - especially the Wishing Well tea rooms a few yards down the road. Hoping to Redbook for next year.

  • "The cottage was absolutely beautiful and in a lovely setting with lots of walks nearby."

The kitchen could do with some larger pans as cooking was difficult at times with what was available. Comfortable garden chairs/deck chairs would be an added bonus too for chilling in the garden. The only criticism is the shower, not very hot and no power to it but this did not ruin our holiday.

  • "Lovely spot."

Peaceful and pretty village with good walking routes from the cottage. The Wishing Well Tearooms (just up the lane) had gorgeous gardens to sit in and they serve a lovely brunch and have an amazing selection of cakes. Great location for getting to the coast and to Weymouth. The cottage provided all that we needed. A bunch of fresh flowers and biscuits on arrival with provisions of tea and coffee in the kitchen were nice touches and appreciated. We had troubles with the heating (it was on a timer that we were unable change), and the heating wouldn't come on in the morning when adjusting the thermostat. Had to wait until going out for a walk and getting a signal on the phone (no phone signal at the cottage) to call Sykes Cottages and have an engineer come out to fix the problem. We were then able to turn the heating on when we wanted to, first thing in the morning. No instructions or bin for recycling rubbish- so we ended up bringing some of our recycling home with us but felt bad about putting other recyclable rubbish into the general waste.

About the location

UPWEY

Dorchester 4.5 miles; Weymouth 4 miles.

The picturesque village of Upwey lies just four miles north of Weymouth, nestling beneath the Dorset Ridgeway, and takes its name from the shallow chalk stream, the River Wey, which bubbles up here from an underground spring. Upwey is well-known for its Wishing Well, where George III once sought the benefits of the natural spring water. It is now a delightful tea room, serving lunches and traditional cream teas. There are a number of footpaths leading directly from the village to miles of unspoilt countryside, and close by is the market town of Dorchester, Thomas Hardy’s ’Casterbridge’. An easy drive or bus ride takes you to the popular seaside resort of Weymouth offering visitors glorious golden sandy beaches, excellent watersports facilities and a bustling harbour. An attractive village location and an ideal place to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
