“Lovely cottage in peaceful location but some details let it down”

We have just returned from a week's stay at this cottage and thought a review may be useful to others as there are no recent ones on Tripadvisor. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the cottage and the fact that it is pet friendly, the owner kindly permitting us to bring both of our small terriers, was very attractive to us. It was also excellent value. It is literally in the middle of nowhere and if you are looking for peace and quiet, you will certainly find it here. It was so nice to awake each morning to the sound of the farm animals (noisy geese!) and birdsong. The roads around the cottage are single track so there is very little passing traffic. To get to the Shave Cross Inn is a 10 minute walk along the narrow lane, but there are torches supplied so we didn't feel it was too dangerous in the dark. The cottage is equipped with the essentials and it was handy having a washing machine and dryer. We found the beds extremely comfortable and the shower is hot and powerful. The cottage was clean and tidy. It is full of character and has been furnished in keeping with the age and style. There is a lawned area which, although enclosed by hedge, we could not let our small dogs run loose because there were gaps leading onto the road. However, there is an enclosed area at the rear which also has seating. There is a new flat screen TV with integrated DVD player so don't be misled by the photographs on Sykes's website of a rather old fashioned TV. With a few special touches, this cottage could be perfect : Towels - not supplied. We only found out when we contacted the owner direct. Although not a problem, Sykes should state this on their website. Wifi - none available. We had been told there WAS Wifi so this was a little irritating for us as we use the Internet to research local restaurants, points of interest, etc. Hairdryer - None. DVDs/books/games in case of wet weather - none. Welcome pack - none. Not even a tea bag or a jug of milk which after a 5 hour drive and with the nearest shop being 5 miles away would have been a nice touch as the cottage is so remote. It's such a pretty cottage, I longed to add pretty pictures and lamps, a few knick knacks and a cosy fireside rug. The most disappointing thing for us was the lack of contact from the owner. Usually, as a courtesy, owners call round to check everything is okay and whether you need any information. When I ran out of tin foil during the week, and knocked at the owner's farmhouse next door to borrow some, I was asked to purchase a replacement roll at a cost of £1.25 which I thought was very petty and poor customer service. There is cider and honey available to purchase from the farm, but there are no details in the cottage so a sales opportunity is probably being missed there. Overall, our week was very enjoyable; the weather was excellent for September, and we travelled widely throughout East and West Dorset all of which is beautiful. The cottage was a good base to return to after a long day and with a little more attention to detail could be even better.
