“Monet Cottage could have been a lovely place.”

Unfortunately we had cleanliness issues in certain areas. The worst was the strong smell of dogs in the living room which was so bad that we considered coming home early. After buying spray and candles we made it bearable. We knew it was dog friendly and sometimes we bring our dog but didn't this time. When we do we never allow our dog on sofas etc. and we think this was where most of the smell was coming from (the covers on the sofa needed washing) and the carpet also smelt. ...

There were cobwebs inside and out on the windows, in fact the outside looked neglected with weeds in pots and on paths around the garden and shrubs all overgrown. The 'Monet Garden' was nothing like the picture on line. As I say it could be such a lovely place with just a small amount of effort. We tried not to let this spoil our break and did enjoy going out and about.

The owners thank you for your feedback. They were a little disappointed that the didn't get the opportunity to address any of your comments during your stay to make your time there more enjoyable. Their contact details are in the chalet and they were only too happy to assist during your stay where they could. The property does accept pets and although guests are requested to keep their animals off the soft furnishings they do not always follow this rule. Cleanliness levels are usually very high at this property and since your comments were left in the guest book the cleaners have carried out a deep clean. The owners thank you for your constructive comments and hope you enjoyed your stay at Chalet Monet. - Sykes owner relations

The property

This lovely single-storey timber lodge with its Monet inspired garden is an ideal location for a romantic getaway or for those who love natural history.

Chalet Monet sits within in its own secluded garden in a countryside setting in the grounds of the owner’s home, adjacent to an orchard and a Conservation Area, in the village of Bothenhampton, one mile from Bridport.

The area is rich in wildlife and there are numerous walking trails nearby, along with a pub in easy walking distance.

The lodge itself accepts pets and off road parking is provided.

You enter this holiday home via a private gateway, cross the garden by a paved path, and then ascend a few steps onto a decked patio with outdoor furniture, which is a great place to sit and admire the garden while enjoying a cool drink in the evening sunlight.

Entering the accommodation through the glazed double door you will find an open plan living area with a well-equipped kitchen, dining area and a cosy sitting area.

To the right of the living area is a double bedroom, which is light and airy and has a modern en-suite shower room.

The garden is a haven for plant lovers and includes roses, peonies, irises, many climbing plants and water lilies in two unfenced ponds.

Also tucked away in a secret corner of the garden is a love-seat.

One mile away the market town of Bridport which has many restaurants and pubs offering offer meals, as well as shops selling locally-farmed produce.

The town is famous for its history of making ropes and nets for British shipping.

The ‘port’ of Bridport is now a harbour known as West Bay.

Although surrounded nowadays by many amusements and eating establishments, it remains a working harbour where fish and scallops are landed and from where cruises can be taken.

The spectacular Jurassic Coast, which extends for some fifty miles from Exeter in the west to Portland Bill in the east, encompasses Lyme Bay and includes the famous Chesil Beach.

The rolling countryside of West Dorset, made famous by Thomas Hardy, has been the setting for many films and for the TV series Broadchurch.

There are many other interesting places to visit nearby including the villages of Abbotsbury, Burton Bradstock and Lyme Regis.

Chalet Monet is a charming romantic base from which to explore all that Dorset has to offer.

About the location

BOTHENHAMPTON

West Bay Harbour and beach 1 mile; Bridport 1 mile; Charmouth, 5 miles; Lyme Regis 9 miles; Weymouth 18 miles.

Close to the sea, the village of Bothenhampton is within easy walking distance of the centre of Bridport, a market town which grew up around the Rivers Brit and Asker and was shaped by its extensive history of supplying ropes and nets for British shipping. The wide streets and long alleyways between the houses were once where flax strands were twisted into rope. In today's Bridport those same streets are filled with a wide variety of interesting shops, restaurants and inns, while in the back-streets are many small businesses selling antiques and collectables. Bridport is a lively town with three theatres, street entertainment, and many civic events that take place in the public arena throughout the summer months. The twice-weekly street market is often featured on the River Cottage TV programme. One mile to the south is the working harbour of West Bay at the centre of the Jurassic coast which is a World Heritage Site and a rich source of fossils. The dramatic coastline includes Golden Cap and the famous Chesil Beach and has formed the back-drop to TV's Harbour Lights and the setting for the popular detective series, Broadchurch. Bothenhampton is a superb base for exploring wonderful West Dorset. Many quaint farming villages are to be discovered inland, while eastward along the coast are the pretty villages of Burton Bradstock (4 miles) and Abbotsbury with its famous sub-tropical gardens and Swannery (7 miles). To the west are the picturesque seaside resorts of Charmouth (5 miles) and Lyme Regis (9 miles). Nearby are Dorchester (15 miles), Axminster (16 miles) and Portland (17 miles) where high-grade facing stone is still extracted. To the east of the Portland peninsula is the resort town of Weymouth with a huge sandy beach and all the traditional seaside attractions. Further east are Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove and Purbeck.
