About the location
Shepton Mallet 2.5 miles; Wells 3 miles.
The charming village of Croscombe lies more or less equidistant between Wells and Shepton Mallet, surrounded by pretty Somerset countryside. Nestling beneath the Mendip Hills in the valley of the River Sheppey, the village offers a thriving local shop and pub. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Croscombe was the centre of the woollen trade, and subsequently, many of the attractive cottages which now adorn the conservation area were constructed during those prosperous years. The nearby historic town of Shepton Mallet offers a delightful mixture of old and new, with some wonderful ancient architecture and a weekly market, plus a variety of shops, pubs and eateries. The town is also home to the Royal Bath and West Showground; one of Britain's leading agricultural shows held every May/June, with many other events held throughout the year. Wells, England’s smallest city, is named after the springs which still bubble up today in the grounds of the splendid Bishop’s Palace, situated next to the beautiful 12th century cathedral, while the quaint market square offers an array of interesting boutiques and restaurants, and a colourful twice-weekly market. The surrounding Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty provides a wealth of scenic footpaths and rugged landscapes, a superb centre for caving and rock climbing, whilst nearby Cheddar Gorge, Wookey Hole Caves and several outstanding National Trust properties offer great days out. Alternatively, take in a visit to the picturesque Somerset levels, or mystical Glastonbury. With a wealth of attractions within very easy reach, this pretty village offers visitors a convenient and ideal touring base.
