Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, only negative bring very noisy fans on toilets/bathrooms but appreciate it's a very old building

  • "We loved this cottage."

Quirky, interesting and comfortable. Such a shame the weather didn’t allow us to enjoy your beautiful garden. This would be a great place to stay in the winter with the aga warming and fires roaring! Took a while to get used to the water, being so hard. I even descaled the kettle. The Dorset water makes good beer though. :) The back door key was a little tricky. Had to really pull the door to turn the key. We also could have done with a spare front door key as all guests were adults and wanted to do different things. The beds were very comfortable and it was great having 2 areas to chill out. A real gem in a beautiful, friendly village. Thank you.

Julie, thank you for your valued feedback. We have taken on board your comments regarding aspects that require immediate action and will ensure that a second key is available in future, where appropriate. All feedback is appreciated especially comments regarding our lovely village. Apologies that the weather was not as good as it should have been for this time of the year. Andrew & Margery. Lovely kitchen diner and plenty of space to relax and sit in the pretty bright conservatory area. Great to be able to bring our little dog who enjoyed exploring the garden. This is very much a home and not just a featureless holiday rental. Every kitchen utensil you could wish for is there, so a great place to cook a proper family meal. Also a good base point for day trips etc and a friendly village pub just across the road for times when you don’t want to cook. Parking was easy too. Highly recommend.

It is 25 mins from the coast but the village has reasonable amenities. It was well equipped and the secret garden and patio would have been a great asset had it not rained on and off all week!

  • "We've had a great week at King Charles Cottage, despite the mixed weather."

The kitchen is very well equipped, and the dining room/kitchen/conservatory is a lovely space. Comfortable beds, a good shower upstairs, and many decorative touches throughout the cottage. The courtyard garden is totally secure - we have a small dog who is an escape artist but had no worries there. We went on day trips to Charmouth (found some fossils!), Hive Beach and Chesil Beach, all of which are dog-friendly in parts, just check online. Bridport market is worth a look. The White Lion pub across the road is very friendly and the food is good, can recommend the Friday night ribs. The Tuesday evening fish and chip van is great, worth ordering beforehand. The village store is friendly and well stocked. Thank you!

Thank you Jackie, Russ and Rosie for your lovely feedback. We delighted that the cottage met your expectations and that you had a great week and found the amenities we have in the village were to your liking as well. • "We had an amazing holiday in this delightfully quirky cottage in Broadwindsor."

The cottage was well equipped, spacious and comfortable. We spent all our evenings in the conservatory overlooking the courtyard garden, it was so peaceful and relaxing. The secret garden is charming and an extra space for al fresco dining. The village as a whole made us feel very welcome. The community shop is very well stocked and we enjoyed the meals we had in the White Lion served by friendly staff. We were lucky enough to partake of a delicious afternoon tea in the Stableyard Restaurant at the Craft Centre as a treat for my birthday. Dorset is a beautiful county with its rolling hillsides, it’s enchanting woodlands and heathlands and of course the Jurassic coast.

Thank you Jan, Tammy and Monty, so much for your lovely feedback as well the review you left at the cottage. So pleased the weather was good and you had an opportunity to explore the beautiful county of Dorset. We are particularly pleased that our historic cottage was everything you expected, and that you enjoyed its courtyard and secret gardens. We are blessed in Broadwindsor to have the facilities you refer to, and delighted that you were made to feel welcome by our community. Thank you. Andrew and Margery. Property Owner

The cottage was very comfortable and spotlessly clean. We loved the kitchen/conservatory and the courtyard. The cottage is very attractive and the description of it was very accurate. It totally lived up to our expectations. We found the village very friendly. The community shop is well stocked, the artisan baker is an asset and we had a delicious pizza from the van that parks in the square. The chef comes from Naples and it was very authentic. The White Lion is a great pub. It was resurrected and reopened by the villagers and has just had its first anniversary. The food is good and the Sunday lunch excellent. We and our two dogs were made very welcome by the lovely landlady, Kerry. Broadwindsor is an excellent base for visiting some really lovely places and there is plenty to do. We stayed for a month and it flew by. We would definitely go again. Thank you.

The house was spotless, very quirky and lovely touches such as the housekeeper leaving a pint of milk, tea, coffee, sugar for our arrival. The gardens & surrounding area were beautiful, a great pub and local shop across the way and everyone was very friendly. Unfortunately due to the one track roads we weren’t able to safely walk with our children but not a problem in the car; we visited Lyme Regis a number of times and the beaches were very clean. It’s a shame the parking was quite expensive; especially when we had 2 cars to pay for but we made the most of spending the whole day there when we visited. All in all, was a lovely break and would definitely go back.

Stacey, we are delighted that you had a wonderful holiday in the cottage, the village and Dorset. We are so fortunate in rural Dorset to have a thriving community pub, and village shop within two minutes walk. So pleased that you found everything in the cottage and gardens to your liking, especially the little touches offered by our housekeeper. We look forward to welcoming you back sometime soon. The sunny family room kitchen and gardens are the highlight of the cottage. Location perfect and a great village atmosphere with welcoming local people pub and general store. We parked close outside with no problem. The double glazing kept out most road noise. Good local dog walk fairly level. Would like an ordnance survey map please to help find footpaths. The downstairs bathroom and shower facilities were preferred. We would return if the twin or a 6 foot bed was in a bigger bedroom but that is purely a personal issue so would very much recommend the cottage and location.

The cottage was exactly as described, well equipped, clean and had a very homely feel. The only drawback was the parking, although you could park outside the cottage this was a very busy junction with tractors going past but we did manage to park across the road when a space became available. All in all a very relaxing, enjoyable stay and I must thank Andrew for sorting out the issue with the washing machine promptly and for the wine and chocolates.

Simon, many thanks for your feedback and we are delighted that you enjoyed your holiday at our historic cottage. Locals very friendly. Plenty of space to spread out downstairs. Spent most time when in the cottage in the conservatory and courtyard garden as had a lively toddler in the party. Very well equipped. Just missing a hair dryer. We enjoyed visits to West Bay, Lyme Regis and Hive beach. Recommend The Parlour for stone baked pizza on a working farm and milk from the vending machine at Waggon farm. The local shop is well stocked and the fish and chip van visits Tuesdays. The craft centre is nice to walk to. Only had coffee and cake but delicious and seems very popular. Some of the roads are very narrow in places and take a bit of getting used to.

The garden is absolutely amazing. So lovely to eat outside on the secret terrace. The kitchen has everything that you need and we welcomed having a dishwasher and washing machine. The wifi was fine - which we needed with two teenagers. We loved the location - it is utterly beautiful countryside, with lots of amazing local walks. It's not too far from the sea and we swam most days. There are many houses and beautiful gardens not too far away and no shortage of things to do. We loved the local shop and stocked up on basics, but there are large supermarkets not too far away. The second downstairs bathroom was really useful, especially after coming in from the beach. I would very much recommend the New Inn in Stoke Abbott and The Anchor in Burton Bradstock to eat. Both lovely food. We had a lovely evening in the garden at the New Inn, bathed in the lovely golden Dorset light. A lovely holiday.

The gardens were stunning with gorgeous flowers and herbs making it a haven for bees which is truly needed with their declining numbers. The local store has friendly staff and any essentials you may need to purchase. The pub was friendly and all the locals made us feel welcome. Broadwindsor was a great location for easy access to the coast and local villages/towns. The Lewesdon Hill NatTrust site was a nice walk from the cottage with access via the nearby fields which had wonderful views of the countryside. We found two dog friendly beaches nearby, Monmouth and Hive. We also liked the novelty of the local milk vending machines where we purchased milk shakes and snacks. I would highly recommend this cottage for families or couples and was dog friendly. We would like to thank Andrew and Margery for letting us use this wonderful house.

Yes, there are low beams, a steep staircase and uneven floors upstairs but that is part of its charm. You do learn and get used to it and we found it very cozy and welcoming. The owners went out of their way to make sure that everything was ok for us, which it was and they were so helpful and friendly. The 'Secret Garden' was a big surprise. We thought it was the courtyard garden at first not realizing the door at the bottom led into a much larger garden where we actually ended up spending a lot of time just chilling out. We knew that we would be restricted visiting pubs, historic houses, museums etc. but still found plenty to see and do. The Community Shop is a credit to the village, it caters for almost anything you may need; the local sausages were really tasty and there is so much more besides. It would be nice to return when hopefully all restrictions have been lifted and we can fully enjoy all the attractions of the area. More importantly we can restock on the ciders from Isaacs Cider Farm, just a few miles down on Bridport Road but they sell it in the shop as well !!

Beds really comfy and quality bedding. We have stayrd in this village before, and its really friendly, lovely pub , award winning local shop, fish n chip van on Tuesdays, excellent! Beaminster short drive away, for lots of small shops and Bridport about 15min drive for 2 x weekly markets, lots of shops, restaurants and supermarkets. Dog friendly. The coastal drive starts here to Weymouth. Abbotsbury is beautiful , pubs and tea rooms and swannery. ( no dogs). West Bay is a must! and close to Lyme Regis for day by the Sea. This cottage is so relaxing. Loved tge conservatory. spent most of our time here, watching the clouds and stars. Lots of birds to watch in garden, saw Blackbirds and Robins, with many others. The open fire in lounge was a delight in the evening ( use the smokeless fire logs) can get them in the discount shop in Bridport. Tv is a smart tv, best we have had in any of the cottages we stayed in. Take your netflix log in to watch, but plenty of channels as well. Cant wait to go back! Had to call owner once as We were unsure how to use central heating, but he responded instantly, on a Sunday too! soon lovely and warm. 5* from us and Banjo the dog. Took my 88 yr mum. The village of Broadwindsor had all we needed with an excellent very friendly local Pub run by Vicki and Spike also a well stocked Community shop. The local craft centre restaurant is also a lovely place for a meal or coffee. The village square has weekly visits from a fish and chip van and and a fresh fishmonger. All the main Dorset attractions are easily reached by car and there’s a local bus service as a bonus. The upstairs bathroom was largely unusable due to shape of room; the sink was too small to brush teeth, the shower enclosure was too small and the ceiling above the toilet too low. The location of the cottage was very isolated with a hours drive to reach amenities. Pub had very limited open hours which we would have like to be informed about before booking as this was a major selling point for us. Our welcome pack wasn’t welcoming at all and more like a list of restrictions.

Thank you for your feedback and we are saddened and perplexed to read your comments. We know the unseasonal weather during your stay was not kind to you and that the village and several others locally suffered a power cut which prevented you from cooking a meal. Our housekeeper offered to cook for you but then the electricity came back on. Heating is available to all clients and nowhere in the welcome pack does it state that it is not. There are also two log fires available. We have used the beds and found them very comfortable. The upstairs bathroom is small but useable. The walk-in shower is bigger than a standard-sized shower and there is also a bigger bathroom available downstairs. Our welcome pack is there to provide information about the cottage and the local area to help our guests enjoy their stay. The cottage is at the heart of a busy village, with a thriving community shop just around the corner, a popular pub (the limited opening hours due to Covid-19 sent to you in the welcome pack before arrival), a weekly fish and chip van and other amenities, including multi-use games area, childrens playground and dog-friendly countryside walks. We are five minutes by car from the nearest town of Beaminster, which has a brilliant array of shops including a butcher, greengrocer and supermarket,10 minutes from Crewkerne, which has Waitrose and Lidl, and 15 minutes from the market town of Bridport, which has a Lidl, Waitrose, Co-op and Morrisons, a wonderful feel-good vibe and the glorious Jurassic Coast. The property

King Charles Cottage in the Dorset village of Broadwindsor holds some impressive history.

This mid-terrace cottage is in the centre of the village, on the main square. King Charles II once slept in this very cottage when he was fleeing from Parliamentary troops in September 1651.

It still boasts many of the original features that the king himself would have seen and touched. Suited to a family looking to stay somewhere with character, or a group of history lovers who want to explore the beautiful Dorset countryside, this property is a lovely choice. Enter into the spacious hallway where you can sit down and take off your walking boots in front of the woodburning stove and be welcomed in to the antique style of the house, with beautiful pieces of furniture, some vintage taxidermy placed around the room and on the walls. Next door, you can relax on a quiet evening in on the sofa in front of the Smart TV, watching your favourite shows or a family favourite film, with a large open fireplace to warm you.

The uneven floors, low wooden beams and steep steps all add to the incredible charm of this property.

As you head into the kitchen/diner down a few steps, you will reach the magnificent timber-framed conservatory at the far end. A large farmhouse-style dining table can seat the whole party and more, and the chef of the group can look on and stay in the conversation, thanks to the open-plan layout. Housing all the essentials is the utility room which includes the washing machine and tumble dryer, freeing up more space in the kitchen. When it's time to head to bed, continue up the old staircase, and mind your head on those low beams, to find three delightful bedrooms to choose from: two doubles with one being contemporary styled with light and bright decor, and the other being the room King Charles likely slept in, holding a historic aura, and finally a lovely twin room with iron beds and views outside to the village. Serving the bedrooms is a contemporary shower room which has a slanting ceiling and velux window, and a ground-floor bathroom with bath and shower over. Almost all of the rooms have exposed wooden beams, slanting ceilings or lower ceilings and doorways due to the age of the property. Spend some time outside on a summer’s day and relax on the furniture in the enclosed courtyard surrounded by lovely plants and greenery, with another secret garden further back containing fruit cages, strawberry bed and dining area with table and chairs. The village of Broadwindsor is within the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty so there are plenty of rural walks to be enjoyed on your doorstep.

The White Lion, at Broadwindsor, located opposite the cottage, is open again, and run by the community following a fantastic appeal which raised almost £60K, and has just been awarded CAMRA West Dorset's Pub of the Year.

The bar area has been completely refurbished, and redecorated, to create a warm and welcome atmosphere.

Relax in front of a roaring log fire, and enjoy a glass of wine or a pint of fine locally produced ale or cider.

The pub will offer a range of typical pub grub, at reasonable prices, which is all made on the premises.

Booking, especially for Sunday lunch, is advised. Opposite the cottage, in the Square, is the Wobbly Cottage artisan bakery, from where the lovely smell of freshly baked bread wafts in the mornings, and our baker prepares wonderful freshly made bread and other delicacies. The village is also blessed with its own community shop selling a wide range of every day produce and groceries There are some lovely walks around the village, which nestles under Lewesdon Hill, the highest point in Dorset.

Nearby stately homes with magnificent gardens include Mapperton House and Forde Abbey.

And the stunning Jurassic Coast is just 20 minutes away by car.

For a royally historic property, bursting with amazing original features, King Charles Cottage will be your home-from-home in this lovely part of Dorset.
