  • "Our group of 4 enjoyed the cottage and our stay in Portland."

Conveniently placed. There were a couple of maintenance issues but not show stoppers but a great place for us. Comfy furniture and beds. Before we started the holiday we read reviews, some good, some bad, but actually it was fine and everything we needed really. Would be very happy to stay there again. Recommendations would be to ensure the hoover pipes are all secure and in working order, batteries in the remotes should be replaced for new, skirting board at the foot of the cooker needs securing properly, the back yard could do with a clean but wasn't really the time of year to be out there, cleaning under the TV stand was a bit lacking. We cleaned the windows. in the lounge, made all the difference. Yes the parking was a bit of a challenge but once sorted made great use of the buses and didn't need to use the car except to go to the Bill. Ideally situated for a great holiday, Thank you.

  • "This property required cleaning immediately by me."

It requires a deep clean. Windows filthy, carpet, skirtings and sofas dirty. Saniflo toilet system made a loud noise every 15 minutes and toilet cracked. After 5 nights I got it disconnected and sleep ensued. Downstairs shower door falling off rail and toilet seat hinge broken. 2 small windows fastener broken and unable to open. Main bedroom window unable to lock and vulnerable to break in. Unable to close rear door one day, badly corroded and locking gear fixed open. Had to purchase wd40 and got it operable. Park before 4.00pm or a long walk required. Shame a nice cottage badly maintained.

  • "Neptune cottage was good."

However a few things spoilt this lovely cottage. Upstairs toilet saniflo system has a fault as every 10 to 15 minutes goes off and sounds horrendous. Especially as the bathroom is next door to the main bedroom, so sleep is disturbed! Leather sofa needs replacing as both left and right sides sink. Very uncomfortable. This place needs a thorough clean as to be honest the floors are disgusting. Cobwebs inside the front door and in all corners. If you are paying cleaners, they are only doing the bare minimum and ripping you off. Bed was really comfortable. Showers good but downstairs one has doors off of the rollers. Parking is a nightmare but to be honest we used the bus to Weymouth which was only £2 each way which was a bargain. Also buses were very reliable with good timetable. Just a few niggling things as above but enjoyed our stay here and would return if the above was rectified.

  • "Hi. We enjoyed our stay."

An old cottage would be expected to have a certain charm which it certainky did A few things could be improved. Ask the guests to load all crockery/cutlery etc into dishwasher on leaving perhaps ? So they ate squeeky clean and bot as we flet when we arrived that crockery in the cupboards had only been washed in water. Same with grill pans- we are vegetarians and the grills smelt of meat :-( A note saying which bins took what refuse would be good. And whilst we didn't expect a new hotel experience in an old cottage, the windows and carpets could really do with a good clean. Lastly the double bed had lovely bedding but was so saggy. Overall a lovely cottage in a great location

  • "We managed to book Neptune Cottage last minute, and to be honest would have gone elsewhere if there was availability, due to the bad reviews."

However, we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived. The owners have obviously taken note of the reviews, and done quite a bit of work and cleaning to address the issues raised by previous tenants. A great place, fantastic location, clean and tidy, with everything we need. Yes, parking is a bit challenging, but this goes with the territory with an old cottage in place like Fortuneswell in the Summer. We would definitely come here again, and would have no hesitation in recommending it to others.

Never one that smelt as bad as Neptune. It definitely needs all rugs and carpets replaced. The windows were so dirty you could hardly see out of them! The Kettle was absolutely disgusting inside, all calcified up. It took me 45 minutes to clean it! Even then it wasn’t 100 per cent. 2 rubbish bags left in back courtyard from previous guests I assume that had not been removed before our arrival. Also the cobwebs around all the windows and outside courtyard. Worst place we have ever stayed. Area in which it is situated is absolutely great. Maybe try putting some profit from your rental back into the property!! Last but not least there is a huge hole in the wall behind front door. I put a tea towel into it as was concerned it could have housed rats or mice!!! Would I recommend Neptune Cottage to anyone absolutely definitely not.

  • "The property was in a good position."

In general there was everything you needed. However the cleanliness of the property was just satisfactory. We tried to hoover but there was no hoover foot so ended up on my hands and knees to hoover, as there was no broom or dustpan. We found rice in one saucepan! Generally a good property but a little attention to a proper clean would make the holiday a more enjoyable experience. This is just my opinion and it may be my standards are different to others. .

  • "Lovely little clean and tidy cottage which was fine for our needs."

Its located within walking distance of takeaways and the local pub restaurants. But with the co-op and a few other shops quite a hilly trek away. The cottage itself is on three floors with a lounge exactly as shown in the photos. The kitchen diner is well appointed and has all you need to self cater. There's a small yard out back with steep steps to a waste land area which was good for a last thing/first thing visit for the dogs. The cottage was warm and cosy with decent central heating, there's also a fireplace in the lounge with a log burner if that's your thing. There's no WiFi (as stated) and mobile reception isn't great on the ground floor but it's much better higher up. I used my phone as a hotspot for the kids as I have unlimited data. TV and DVD player is there but there's no decent films so take your own if you like to watch a movie at night. The furnishings are comfy enough to spend time in. Parking is available outside, we took two cars and managed to get a space for both, just not always the same one. The location was perfect for us and we would stay again.

We had problems with the heating and hot water plus one of the dishwasher hoses was leaking but this was quickly sorted out following a phone call to the caretaker. We had to wash all of the cutlery and crockery on arrival as it hadn’t been washed very well. We feel the cleaners should check this prior to the next client’s arrival. The downstairs was a bit gloomy and even felt a bit 'seedy', but upstairs was rather lovely. It is just such a shame that no effort whatsoever had been put into making the tiny outside yard into a reasonably pleasant place where one might sit outside and have a coffee/breakfast/beer/whatever. The chairs and table were certainly there, but the dirt and cobwebs all over everything made the yard completely unuseable. A hosing down, clean the window, a lick of paint... it wouldn't be a big job and would have made a bit difference to our enjoyment of the cottage. We actually found it quite frustrating that we couldn't make use of what private outside space there was, especially as we were lucky enough to have really lovely weather during our stay.

  • "The cottage delights and the photos are representative on first arrival."

Lovely beamed living room with woodburner, well equipped kitchen etc. Stairs to top room are steep. (Very common in Portland cottages) We were a little disappointed in the cleanliness when we arrived. We could see that the cleaner had vacuumed and cleaned surfaces, made bed all fine, however it was obvious that a spring clean is well overdue. Lots of cobwebs, furniture had not been moved to clean so very dusty in these places. (eg behind TV), cobwebs on books on bookshelf, and a Christmas Tree left under the bed covered in dust. We had to clean the windows ourselves in order to be able to see out! On the plus side the cottage is warm (it was quite cold outside for the time of year) , beds are comfortable, TV good. There is no oven glove which is tricky using the oven. There is no mobile signal and no wifi available. (sometimes sporadic at front of house eg BT Broadband). The location is excellent for the Chesil Beach, Quiddles Cafe which is lovely , and the unique Cove House Inn. Both of these a short walk and Dog friendly. There is no sea view from the cottage, only the back of the sea defence wall. Parking can be a nightmare. Our group had two cars. We found that parking in the afternoon was usually OK, but come back in the evening and often very difficult to find any space near the cottage. Cottage well served by public transport, bus stop, regular services just metres away.

The lounge does need a bit of a face lift . I appreciate dogs are allowed and thats why we booked it but the rug in the lounge does need to be thrown out and also the cushions on the chairs/sofa could do with replacing. • "The cottage was in a great location, however, it was in need of a good clean and maintenance."

The inside of the oven was very dirty, there was lots of dust everywhere, spider webs, dirt between the sofa cushions, paint coming away from the walls in places, and the stove didn't work properly. If you had the stove door closed, then it didn't give out any heat, so you had to leave the door open, which then meant that the logs burned extremely fast - which of course is expensive. The carpet upstairs is stained in places. A pint of milk would have been handy - most other places we've stayed at, they do have a few basics waiting for you to welcome you when you arrive. The icing on the cake was my parents arriving at the cottage after a day out to find the front door open and some random bloke in there checking the electrics. They are elderly and this was quite a shock for them. The electrician said he come in and thought there was no one there, so got on with his job. We are angry about this. We had booked the cottage for a week so would expect at the very least to be asked our permissions before you sent someone in. Any works should gave been completed when the cottage was empty.

The living room was rustic with a lovely fire, great after a long walk on chesil beach, which was right behind the cottage.
