  • "St John’s View proved to be a lovely comfortable, clean house."

It’s quite traditional but roomy, warm and so well equipped.  We really enjoyed our time here – lots to see and do. We especially liked Fancys Farm (for the children), Portland Bill and the old nature reserve and sculpture quarries It was good to have a drive for the car as there rarely seems to be parking spaces available on the road.  Next time, we’ll come in the summer so we can also enjoy the large grass area in the secluded garden!

We do appreciate guest feedback but this one is difficult to respond to as there is no detail! What is meant by 'tired'? Most comments are very positive, considering it a lovely, comfortable, well-equipped and clean modern property. Property Owner

  • "Size of cottage and location excellent."

but on arrival the wooden railing around front of property is dangerously loose. also the wooden boards to front door are in poor repair ie starting to rot. the hallway and all downstairs needs repainting. the garden is completely unkept. the grass was very long so could not sit out. maybe it was in keeping with no mow may. if so this should be pointed out on the cottage advert. we found parking very tight as other vehicles were parking over the white lines. the cottage itself was clean but tired looking due to decor. the bedding and towels need updating

Thank you for your positive comments on the house and location. We have to admit that the grassed area desperately needed cutting! We were having trouble finding a local person to cut the grass regularly. We can assure the guests that the wooden railing, though loose, was not dangerous - after all, we stay here ourselves!. The decking to the front door is sound with just one board having some surface rot. Property Owner

  • "We loved our stay at St Johns View."

This is the best cottage we have rented through Sykes so far. The location is great with everything we needed nearby, although the road to the cottage is quite narrow I found it to be no problem as it's one way so you never meet oncoming traffic and parking was also easy on the property's own drive. The cottage was very clean, comfortable and quite a lot bigger than expected, with all rooms being a generous size, well maintained and equipped with everything we could have wanted. Although we didn't use it much because we were out exploring all day, the garden was lovely too. We had a great week, in fact I must admit that I didn't want to leave. If we return to the area I will be hoping to book again. Thanks for a lovely stay.

  • "We were very pleased with the house."

It was very clean. There was everything we needed for our holiday including washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, good brand of soap on the bathroom basins and good quality shower gel/cream in the shower cubicles. The space for two cars was accurate as we put a Suzuki S Cross and a Nissan Quashquai side by side on the driveway. The garden was lovely to sit in and the garden furniture was good. The house is very spacious and all the furniture is of a good standard. We would recommend this property and we would go back and stay again. Thank you to Joyce and John, the owners, for renting out such a beautiful property.

  • "We had a lovely week at St."

Johns View on Portland. The house is very comfortable, with all facilities, a real home for home. The location is right next to the church and while bells do ring on the hour it didnt really affect us. The road up to the house is quite narrow and with parked cars you sometimes have to mount the pavement to avoid, but it was never an issue, just added to the character of the place. With 3 local pubs close by, a Co-Op convenience and a fish and chip at the end of the road, you really dont need to drive every day while staying there. The bus service is excellent, with buses every 15 minutes or so into Weymouth or towards Portland Bill. I had a great day walking circumventing the whole Island on the coastal path and thoroughly recommend doing that - with proper hiking shoes!

  • "A lovely, spacious holiday home."

All the rooms are large and the kitchen is very well equipped. The utility room is useful too with a washing machine and space to hang wet clothes. There are lots of family friendly additions with books and some games and a great garden to enjoy. The downside is the beds were too soft so we had a backache all week and the main bedroom was too light with thin, white curtains. It would benefit from blackout curtains.

  • "YES. The accommodation was excellent, however 2 points."

At 73yrs I have limited mobility. If we choose to have tea or drinks in the garden, it meant carrying trays down stairs, which wasn't easy. The other point..from photos and info we didn't realise the property was at the top of a very steep road, we struggled with if we needed to visit shops or go to the beach, and if we had known may not have chosen that property. Having said above. We would say that the owner had been very thoughtful in their provision in the accommodation.

The cottage had lots of facilities, not that we used them but could easily have cooked a meal. Everything was spot on and would consider re hooking a some point. The church bells chiming (that has been mentioned) didn’t bother us at all. All in all a relaxing break in a lovely place.

  • "Overall the cottage was very clean and comfortable."

Lots of information and books (and toys if you had children) The only thing I thought lacking was a wardrobe in the 2nd bedroom. A large chest of drawers is really not enough, with a couple of hooks on the wall. If there was a wardrobe the same as the one in the other bedroom (hanging and shelves) there wouldn't be a need for chest of drawers. But that's the only thing. I must stress how helpful the owners were, when I got back and thought I'd left my camera - they immediately contacted the lady in the area. (but it was all my fault, found camera later under seat in car!)

The cottage has a spacious living area in kitchen diner and separate lounge and 2 good sized double bedrooms downstairs. The cottage had everything we needed and the large enclosed garden was perfect for the family to relax in, and even had a sea view. We got used to the chimes from the church! The nearby local.stoney beach is not ideal for young children/swimming but a nice walk to (very steep) and it has amazing views cross chesil beach from the promenade. We had a fantastic week and St John's was a perfect base to explore the Dorset coast.

  • "Lovely clean comfortable house."

Parking can be difficult due to the neighbours. Not for people with walking problems as on very steep hills. Too far from anywhere nice to walk to so had to use car all the time. Would have been nice to have a welcome pack as we have had at every other cottage through the years. We had to go down a steep hill to get some milk as no parking at local shops.

We are really pleased you reviewed the property as a clean and comfortable house. As owners, we try really hard to ensure the comfort of guests. The property has allocated parking space on the drive for two cars. Whilst the property is on a level road, Portland is a hilly isle and this is part of its charm and ruggedness. Guests do come specifically to walk in Portland and just minutes away is the South West coastal path, with breath-taking sea and countryside views. The shops are just a two minute walk with parking outside and a nearby free 72 hour car park. We do normally leave a welcome pack and apologise that that was overlooked on this occasion. • "Excellent location, very convenient for shops and the local pubs."

A great place to set off walking from too. Portland was a new venue for us, everyone was so welcoming we loved it. Great cafe's in the area, lovely coastal walking and plenty to visit by car too. Inside the accommodation was spacious, loads of room for 4 people. The kitchen/breakfast area has a decent table to eat or work at, and there was also a nice corner settee, perfectly placed for watching the tv. The sitting room is huge, plenty of comfy seating, with a wood burner and tv. Three toilets, two showers and a bath, as well as a utility room with a washing machine. You do hear the church clock chime, but with the double glazed windows closed it didn't disturb us at all, and there was almost no road noise. A decent outside area too, so you could relax in the evening after a day's exploring with your favourite tipple, or a bbq. We will certainly visit again.
