    Great hosts in Janet and Mark, really well equipped and comfortable lodge located in the most peaceful and scenic part of Dorset. Lovely welcome and welcome hamper to boot, Deer watching every evening, rabbits hopping about, it was like Springwatch live! Great location for visiting Dorset and Hampshire’s best attractions and close to Wareham, a gem of a town with great atmosphere, pubs, restaurants, independent shops and river walks. • "A fabulous property which I could not fault."

    It was spotlessly clean, warm (pretty essential when you had the weather we had!), comfortable and well equipped. Janet was friendly and helpful without interfering in any way - something I think hard and long about when renting properties which are situated in their owners’ grounds, which this is, but the lodge is completely private on its own area of land and has lovely views over the fields. We had gale force winds and torrential rain for the whole week but still had a good time, which speaks volumes I think. Self catering is easy in the well equipped kitchen and Wareham, with a variety of pubs and restaurants, is a five minute drive away. We’d love to go back in better weather to take advantage of the outdoor dining facilities and to have a glass of wine on the veranda while watching the rabbits, deer and birds of prey.

There was milk in the fridge and a goody basket containing tea bags, cake, biscuits, fudge. The views of the grounds were lovely and some evenings we were visited by deer, eight on one occasion. Thanks for the lovely welcome basket. Shame the weather wasn't its best but we were able to get out and about every day. Tank Museum well worth a visit for all ages. Monkey World was a bit disappointing as didn't see many monkeys , nothing like you see on TV and cafe very poor. Swanage easy to get to is small but a good sandy beach great for families. Lulworth good for walking around but not so good on a cold windy day - it was freezing the day we went - good for blowing the cobwebs away. Bere Regis very near the cottage two good pubs and a useful village shop. Easy to find your way round straight route to Dorchester / Weymouth area. Well worth staying at Lilac Lodge but the mattress and settees were a bit soft for us - just personal choice., but otherwise all OK.

    The lodge sits within the owners estate behind security gates, and with your own car park and garden area, it is very private and self-contained. You are surrounded by nature and, whilst we didn’t get an opportunity to spend much time outside in the evening (as we visited in November), we hope to be able to return and enjoy some warm evenings in the garden and do some stargazing in the perfect dark skies. Janet is a warm and welcoming host and made sure we had everything we needed, and more! I only gave the accuracy of the listing 4 stars because the lodge was far better than described. From the kitchen equipment to the very comfortable beds, super bathrooms, sofas and the massive TV - they were all high quality furnishings. The master bedroom had a wonderful ensuite and walk in wardrobe with lots of space for your clothes. The twin room also good sized single beds and plenty of wardrobe space. The view from the full length windows was over fields and woods. It was very quiet but close to Wareham for it's range of shops. About the location

WAREHAM

Corfe Castle 5 miles; Poole 9 miles; Swanage 11 miles;

Wareham, affectionately known as the ‘Gateway to the Purbecks’ is an ancient Dorset waterside market town. Situated between the River Frome and quaintly named River Piddle, its charming riverside location makes the town a popular holiday destination. Dating back to Saxon times, the town was once surrounded by walls, and became an important port with boats bringing supplies up the River Frome from nearby Poole harbour. Today, the river provides a great playground, you can hire a boat from the attractive quayside and chug your way down the stream, take one of the regular organised boat trips, browse the colourful Saturday market or simply just enjoy an ice cream or a drink relaxing on the Quayside. Whilst seasonally there are also numerous popular events taking place beside the river. A short drive takes you to the Arne peninsula jutting out into Poole Harbour, a designated RSPB reserve, where you can stroll down to the water’s edge, taking in glimpses of the impressive bird population and often viewing some of the resident deer. The friendly seaside resort of Swanage is also easily accessible, where you can experience a traditional family-friendly day out on the beach, or take the coastal path and stop off for refreshment at Durlston Country Park. A real treat is to drive to nearby Corfe Castle and take the vintage steam railway to Swanage. Wareham offers visitors a super Dorset holiday destination at anytime of the year.
