  • "Beautifully presented cottage with a glorious welcome pack!"

The games and books in the cottage were really appreciated by us all. The washing machine, airer and iron helped us with only needing to take clothes for a week as they could be cleaned and looking good for our second cottage stay week. My only gripe.. I could have done with a small freezer in the fridge, but that was forgotten on opening the gift of prosecco!

Hi Jacqueline, thank you for your kind feedback, much appreciated. I'm glad you had such a good time. There is a small freezer in the cupboard off the kitchen (next to the bathroom door). Sorry if it wasn't obvious, I'll make a note in the welcome manual. We'd love to see you again soon, Anna Property Owner

Super Lage, Einkaufsmöglichkeiten, Pubs, Geschäfte, alles fußläufig zu erreichen. Nette, sehr ruhige Nachbarschaft.

The bedrooms were a little smaller than we had envisaged beforehand but were manageable. We loved Frome's many independent shops and hostelries. The goodie basket left was probably the best that we have ever had so many thanks for that. An extra key might have been helpful.

Thank you Peter, we're delighted you had such an enjoyable stay. We hope to see you again soon, Anna Property Owner

  • "I had a lovely time at Troopers Cottage, which was perfectly situated for trips out in the area, including Bath, Stonehenge, Avebury, Glastonbury and Wells."

I did wonder whether a property in a town location would be noisy at night, but the situation of the property in a cul de sac, and the thickness of the walls made it incredibly quiet and I slept better than at home. Anna was really helpful when I managed to lock myself in on my first day, and arrived to help in minutes. The treats which awaited my arrival were also very welcome. Highly recommended

  • "A very clean, very well equiped and extremely comfortable cottage in a quiet area of town."

There was everything we needed and the owner, Anna, had thoughtfully left us a welcome basket so we could make a drink as soon as we arrived after a long journey. Anna made us feel very welcome with messages a couple of days before we arrived and gave clear instructions on how to get in. She also left details about the cottage and area. We felt confident that had there been any questions or problems she would quickly respond. We would have no hesitation in re booking Troopers Cottage or recommending it.

Thank you Ann, praise indeed! It's very kind of you. Take care and we look forward to welcoming you again soon, Anna Property Owner

Very clean. Lovely comfortable bed but would have been better with blackout blinds. Another small pan would have been useful. Very comfortable and smart in a great location for town and country. Absolutely no parking problems. Door mat would have been essential had it rained. Fortunately we enjoyed a dry and quite sunny week.

Ideally located to access the town and all that it has to offer. We put our walking boots on at the front door and enjoyed scenic walks - with a coffee stop in town on the way back. Car parked outside and we have had a very restful and re-energising week. Cottage super clean and comfortable. Highly recommended. We have every intention to return for another visit.

But most of all the bedstead - too large for the room and most difficult to climb over to get in and out. Having said that we loved the cottage and hope to come back.

Thank you for your feedback David. We're glad you loved Troopers Cottage so much. A new bed (a double rather than the current kingsize, which can be accessed from the end also), is being delivered in 2 weeks. I'll have some coat hooks put up too. It was clean and well presented and we were left some lovely treats which were very much appreciated! And the dog loved it too. My only tiny thing would be perhaps some coat hooks could be added by the front door? Only as a family of 4 we had a lot of coats (!) but that really is only a minor suggestion and wouldn’t stop us from booking again!

Thoughtfully presented & well equipt. Lovely fluffy towels, comfy beds & good shower. Enclosed garden lovely to sit in on an evening. Good position for exploring Frome town. Good touring location. We visited Stonehenge, Durdle Door, Bath, Cheddar Gorge & Bradford upon Avon. From the top of the street you can see a white horse on the hills (on a clear day). This is Bratton Camp & White Horse. We went there too & the views are amazing. All in all a lovely family holiday. Would love to come back & would definitely recommend. Thank you.

The cottage was clean and well equipped. The garden was private and secure for the dog. Parking was never a problem either. Proximity to the town was a bonus as everything was within walking distance. Whatcombe Fields were great for free running the dog followed by a River walk into town for a well earned coffee at one of the many cafes. The location is great for exploring close by (Frome is great for shopping and lovely riverside walks for miles) and further a field, Wells, Stourhead, Shearwater etc The only thing I would change to make it better is to replace the bed frame with one without a footboard as this would help with the restricted space in the bedroom. I’d recommend to future visitors that you pack dishwasher tablets as only 2 are provided and no one wants to wash up when on holiday.

Previous reviews have highlighted the advantages of this recently renovated historic cottage and I concur with everything said. Because the internal dimensions are small great use has been made of the space but storage for clothes and coats etc is limited. The King sized bed is really comfy but difficult to access - anyone with mobility issues please note. But the fixtures, fittings, crockery and furniture are all top notch and it was always nice to get “home”. Wi fi was also excellent and the parking seemed to work ok even though it’s first come, first served.

It was a short walk to the town centre where we found lots of fantastic independent shops and cafes. The welcome pack was extremely helpful and contained ideas for several local walks including a highly recommended walk which took us along part of the River Frome and to wonderful countryside on the outskirts of the town. Frome is a great base if you want to explore other places in Somerset like Bath, Wells and Glastonbury. (All are well worth a visit.) I’d also like to add that Mel from Busy Bees in Frome did a fantastic job cleaning the cottage for our stay. Hand and surface sanitizer were provided, which was very thoughtful. Anna, the cottage owner, responds to any queries quickly and is very polite and friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Troopers Cottage and hope to visit again in the not too distant future.

The property

This stunning 1720s Georgian small and cosy cottage is situated in the heart of the conservation area of Frome.

Just a five minute walk from the artisan Catherine Hill, with its wonderful selection of independent shops and cafes, and a short stroll from the centre of this popular independent market town, this unique and historic property is a rare treat.

Troopers Cottage has undergone extensive renovation work in the last year to restore key original features and now offers a stylish, well-presented combination of modern comforts and early Georgian architecture.

If you are looking for peace and tranquillity, then this is the holiday property for you.

Thick stone walls keep Troopers Cottage cool and calm in the summer and toasty warm in the winter: an all year round holiday experience that is rarely available.

If you can tear yourself away from Frome, you will find Longleat House and Safari Park 15 minutes away by car; the peaceful Roman/Georgian city of Bath a mere 25 minutes distance and the vibrant city of Bristol just 45 minutes away.

The surrounding area is also home to two of Somerset’s areas of outstanding natural beauty – Mendip Hills and Cranbourne Chase – as well as Wiltshire’s famous Stonehenge.

Upon entering this open plan cottage, you will arrive in the cosy living area, which is dominated by the incredible original stone fireplace and bread oven.

Brick partitions show some Victorian-era additions, separating the cooking area from a small warming seat that you are welcome to sit on!

You can relax throughout the day on your choice of a leather sofa or occasional chairs while you watch live television or your favourite Netflix shows on the Smart TV, or choose from one of our offered range of books and board games.

The cottage benefits from luxury vinyl flooring throughout, as well as many USB points to allow for easy charging.

The super modern kitchen area consists of a glass dining table that seats four people and a bar stool to make cooking more of a sociable occasion.

The kitchen is well equipped with a dishwasher, washer dryer, electric oven and hob, fridge, freezer and microwave.

You will also find a toaster and a coffeemaker to make breakfast easy for all.

A stylish bathroom is also found on the ground floor, complete with walk-in shower, sink basin, heated towel rail and WC, as well as storage for your toiletries. Going up the carpeted stairs and past a stunning oak newel post, you arrive at the cottage’s two bedrooms.

The double bedroom looks out onto the quiet Dickensian-style street through two deep set windows with wide sills.

A chest of drawers and set of hooks are provided for your clothes, as well as a hair dryer.

In the single bedroom, you will find bunk beds sized for adults, as well as another chest of drawers and set of hooks.

To the rear of the cottage, there is a fully enclosed small garden with a lawn and a patio area.

A glass table with an umbrella for those balmy sunny days has four comfortable chairs so that you can relax out in the sun after a busy day of exploring.

Dog owners will be pleased to know that the fencing is six feet tall and benefits from a latched gate.

The history buffs among you may be interested in some of the history behind Troopers Cottage.

Pictures around the cottage display various versions of the street and the building itself and you can find out more by delving into several provided books on the conservation area of Frome.

Trinity Street, formerly known as Trooper’s Street, is steeped in centuries of historical interest.

Not least is the 19th Century Holy Trinity church at the end of the street: a Grade II listed building with pre-Raphaelite stained glass windows designed by Edward Burne-Jones. Frome has appeared in The Sunday Times’ “best places to live in the UK” every year from 2017 to 2020, due to its abundance of history and natural beauty along with a wealth of independent shops.

There are more listed buildings in Frome than in any other town in Somerset and an annual festival in July showcases the town’s vast cultural offering.

Known as Somerset’s original market town (with Trooper’s Street originally built as a market street), Frome has held markets for centuries and continues to run its bustling independent market on the first Sunday of the month from March right through to December.

The river Frome is a short walk away and provides the perfect backdrop for a tranquil afternoon stroll.

Dog owners will find plenty of green spaces to exercise their companions, including the community-owned Whatcombe Fields.

Plenty of restaurants and cafes can be found near the cottage and the city of Bath also offers a vast selection of eateries along with the Southgate Shopping Centre and the Thermae Bath Spa – Britain’s only natural thermal hot springs.

The larger city of Bristol is known globally for its urban art and music scene and plays host to endless gigs, events and art exhibits as well as providing a wealth of inviting attractions such as the We The Curious interactive science centre, leading contemporary arts hub the Arnolfini, the exciting Bristol Zoo and numerous spot-as-you-walk Banksy street art pieces.

Troopers Cottage sits in a truly enviable location that benefits from both the peace and quiet of semi-rural town life and the plethora of culture, events and activities in Frome and the surrounding area.

It is best placed to let you explore everything that Somerset has to offer.
