As part of this we have had stayed several times and the vast majority of our stays have been in Troopers Cottage. Its a lovely, comfortable house in a quiet street. Parking is on street but never a problem. It is walking distance from the town centre. There is a lovely garden perfect if you are bringing a dog. It is well stocked with a lovely welcome hamper. • "Myself, my husband and adult son spent 5 nights at Troopers Cottage."

It was a lovely presented, clean and comfortable cottage. The bedrooms are small especially the bunk room but this was indicated by the photos and was something we were expecting. The bunk bed was large enough for an adult and according to my son very comfy. The heating system was very efficient, warming the house quickly. The kitchen was well equipped and everything worked well. The shower room was very clean with a very powerful shower and lots of soft towels. Unfortunately on our last day we experienced a problem with parking. We had parked our car out the front of the property each day without problem. My daughter joined us for the last couple of days of our stay and parked at the back of the property as advised by the owner, Overnight somebody cut the wires on and stole her electric door mirror and damaged her headlight. I would not recommend parking in this particular area. This said we still enjoyed our stay very much, especially being able to walk into town, Anna was very welcoming and efficient and the welcome basket of goodies much appreciated.

Thank you for your kind words Andrea, I'm delighted you enjoyed your stay. I'm sorry about the damage to your daughter's car. We hope to see you back at Troopers Cottage again, Anna Property Owner

The location is superb and it was so easy to wander into the centre of Frome. The cottage is very comfortable and was a pleasure to return to on a chilly December evening although some slightly heavier/darker blinds in the bedroom would be handy for light sleepers. We really appreciated the wonderful welcome basket and all of the information about the history of the house, street and local area. Thank you Anna, we would be keen to return in the future.

We are able to park outside our cottage for the whole of our stay which is a real bonus. In addition it was very quiet at night and the little garden was lovely to sit in for breakfast or a coffee. The cottage had everything we needed and was clean and comfortable with a lovely welcome hamper waiting for us. Because my sister and I like our own bedrooms, I had to have the bunk bed room which is really too small for an adult. But , I knew this before booking, just didn’t expect it to be so small. Nevertheless, we still had a really enjoyable stay.

The perfect place to stay for a couple - and a young child. It’s set in a very quiet street about an 8-minute stroll from the centre of Frome, the only problem being is that the route takes you past the front door of, possibly, the best pub in Frome, The Griffin, so 8-minutes can easily become an hour. The decor throughout is excellent, both comfortable and homely. It is well equipped and the bathroom is spacious with a huge walk-in shower. There’s a small back garden, so handy if you have a dog, and on-street parking, outside the property to the front and rear, is not an issue. On arrival there was a lavish welcome pack, and the owner did everything to make us feel welcome and our stay enjoyable and comfortable. Really can’t rate Troopers Cottage highly enough and will certainly stay again as we visit the area regularly.

The best gifts we have ever received when renting a cottage before, which we enjoyed and appreciated very much. The cottage was so homely and well equipped, beautifully decorated, a home from home. It was also the perfect base for mystical Somerset which meant we had some glorious days out, all within a short drive. In fact, there’s so much to do in the area we’ll definitely be returning and booking Troopers Cottage again. The streets in Frome are narrow, but that wasn’t an issue and we had no issue’s parking outside the cottage all week. One tip, if there are gaps when you return, grab the opportunity to do a three point turn, so that you’re facing the right way the following day, as the street fills up in the evening. It worked for us as we did early starts and got back before 5pm. All in all, a wonderful week in Somerset and enjoyable stay at Troopers Cottage. Thank you for having us.

  • "The cottage was beautiful, cozy and had everything we needed."

It was a short walk to the town centre where we found lots of fantastic independent shops and cafes. The welcome pack was extremely helpful and contained ideas for several local walks including a highly recommended walk which took us along part of the River Frome and to wonderful countryside on the outskirts of the town. Frome is a great base if you want to explore other places in Somerset like Bath, Wells and Glastonbury. (All are well worth a visit.) I’d also like to add that Mel from Busy Bees in Frome did a fantastic job cleaning the cottage for our stay. Hand and surface sanitizer were provided, which was very thoughtful. Anna, the cottage owner, responds to any queries quickly and is very polite and friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Troopers Cottage and hope to visit again in the not too distant future.

The property

This stunning 1720s Georgian small and cosy cottage is situated in the heart of the conservation area of Frome.

Just a five minute walk from the artisan Catherine Hill, with its wonderful selection of independent shops and cafes, and a short stroll from the centre of this popular independent market town, this unique and historic property is a rare treat.

Troopers Cottage has undergone extensive renovation work in the last couple of years to restore key original features and now offers a stylish, well-presented combination of modern comforts and early Georgian architecture.

If you are looking for peace and tranquillity, then this is the holiday property for you.

Thick stone walls keep Troopers Cottage cool and calm in the summer and toasty warm in the winter: an all year round holiday experience that is rarely available.

If you can tear yourself away from Frome, you will find Longleat House and Safari Park 15 minutes away by car; the peaceful Roman/Georgian city of Bath a mere 25 minutes distance and the vibrant city of Bristol just 45 minutes away.

The surrounding area is also home to two of Somerset’s areas of outstanding natural beauty – Mendip Hills and Cranbourne Chase – as well as Wiltshire’s famous Stonehenge.

Upon entering this open plan cottage, you will arrive in the cosy living area, which is dominated by the incredible original stone fireplace and bread oven.

Brick partitions show some Victorian-era additions, separating the cooking area from a small warming seat that you are welcome to sit on!

You can relax throughout the day on your choice of a leather sofa or occasional chairs while you watch live television or your favourite Netflix shows on the Smart TV, or choose from one of our offered range of books and board games.

The cottage benefits from luxury vinyl flooring throughout, as well as many USB points to allow for easy charging.

The super modern kitchen area consists of a glass dining table that seats four people and a bar stool to make cooking more of a sociable occasion.

The kitchen is well equipped with a dishwasher, washer dryer, electric oven and hob, fridge, freezer and microwave.

You will also find a toaster and a coffeemaker to make breakfast easy for all.

A stylish bathroom is also found on the ground floor, complete with walk-in shower, sink basin, heated towel rail and WC, as well as storage for your toiletries. Going up the carpeted stairs and past a stunning oak newel post, you arrive at the cottage’s two bedrooms.

The double bedroom looks out onto the quiet Dickensian-style street through two deep set windows with wide sills.

A chest of drawers and set of hooks are provided for your clothes, as well as a hair dryer.

In the single bedroom, you will find bunk beds sized for adults, as well as another chest of drawers and set of hooks.

To the rear of the cottage, there is a fully enclosed small garden with a lawn and a patio area.

A glass table with an umbrella for those balmy sunny days has four comfortable chairs so that you can relax out in the sun after a busy day of exploring.

Dog owners will be pleased to know that the fencing is six feet tall and benefits from a latched gate.

The history buffs among you may be interested in some of the history behind Troopers Cottage.

Pictures around the cottage display various versions of the street and the building itself and you can find out more by delving into several provided books on the conservation area of Frome.

Trinity Street, formerly known as Trooper’s Street, is steeped in centuries of historical interest.

Not least is the 19th Century Holy Trinity church at the end of the street: a Grade II listed building with pre-Raphaelite stained glass windows designed by Edward Burne-Jones. Frome has appeared in The Sunday Times’ “best places to live in the UK” every year from 2017 to 2020, due to its abundance of history and natural beauty along with a wealth of independent shops.

There are more listed buildings in Frome than in any other town in Somerset and an annual festival in July showcases the town’s vast cultural offering.

Known as Somerset’s original market town (with Trooper’s Street originally built as a market street), Frome has held markets for centuries and continues to run its bustling independent market on the first Sunday of the month from March right through to December.

The river Frome is a short walk away and provides the perfect backdrop for a tranquil afternoon stroll.

Dog owners will find plenty of green spaces to exercise their companions, including the community-owned Whatcombe Fields.

Plenty of restaurants and cafes can be found near the cottage and the city of Bath also offers a vast selection of eateries along with the Southgate Shopping Centre and the Thermae Bath Spa – Britain’s only natural thermal hot springs.

The larger city of Bristol is known globally for its urban art and music scene and plays host to endless gigs, events and art exhibits as well as providing a wealth of inviting attractions such as the We The Curious interactive science centre, leading contemporary arts hub the Arnolfini, the exciting Bristol Zoo and numerous spot-as-you-walk Banksy street art pieces.

Troopers Cottage sits in a truly enviable location that benefits from both the peace and quiet of semi-rural town life and the plethora of culture, events and activities in Frome and the surrounding area.

It is best placed to let you explore everything that Somerset has to offer.
