    Mr Hume

“This was a late booking made at short notice.”

We were met on arrival at the property, shown around and made welcome. Throughout our stay the owners continuously checked to see if there was anything we needed and even sourced honey from a local bee keeper. We also enjoyed apple juice which is pressed and bottled on site. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to return again soon. This represented excellent value for money.

The property

This single storey cottage is situated on the edge of Henstridge, joined to a converted threshing barn at the end of a 200 yard drive and surrounded by apple orchards and paddocks.

Dating from the mid 18th century, with beams, leaded windows and pine floors, it is a peaceful Somerset base for small families or couples.

Enter your front door up a couple of steps and you will find yourself in the hall, off which is the lofty open plan living space with wood burning stove and TV in the seating area, a dining area and a well equipped kitchen area.

Head into the two pretty pink bedrooms for a peaceful haven after exploring this wonderful region.

Enclosed by stone walls, the lovely garden shared with the owner is a sheltered sun trap where you can enjoy a barbecue and meet the guinea pigs.

With Shetland ponies in the paddocks and home produced eggs and prize-winning apple juice, this is a real country idyll.

There is a handy shop and café, or head into the village to visit the two pubs or excellent Indian restaurant and the Henstridge 9-hole Golf course.

All around is Thomas Hardy country and the beautiful Vale of Blackmore, so you can explore Somerset and Dorset, with great panoramic views from old hill forts.

Transport can be arranged to the train station just a couple of miles away and there are regular bus services and local bike hire if you want to park up the car.

Somerset is a treasureland of stately homes and there are no less than twenty to visit within twenty miles.

In an ideal spot for exploring Somerset and Dorset, Quiet Corner Cottage lives up to its name.

About the location

HENSTRIDGE

Sherborne 7 miles; Shaftesbury 10 miles.

The little village of Henstridge can be found right on the border of Somerset and Dorset, at the head of the lush Blackmore Vale, used as the backdrop to Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles. Surrounded by glorious countryside, Henstridge is well served by a shop, pubs, restaurants and a cafe and offers lovely walks accompanied by fine views. The village is ideally located for exploring Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire, as within a short drive lies the historic town of Sherborne, famous for its abbey and castles, and once home to Sir Walter Raleigh. Close by are a wealth of National Trust properties, such as the stunning Stourhead House and Gardens, while the nearby hilltop town of Shaftesbury, best known for the picturesque Gold Hill, is also well worth a visit. With the beautiful cathedral city of Salisbury, Stonehenge, Bath and The Dorset Heritage Coast all easily accessible, this is a great base for relaxing and enjoying the delights of this superb area of the country.
