  • "Lovely cottage."

Basic and essential supplies missing, like soap, hand towels and washing up liquid. No local shop to top up ourselves. No shaver socket. Parking issues, as anxious neighbours will approach you wherever you park prettily nearby. Owner not communicative, but supplies eventually arrived mid-week. I raised the matter of what we can expect to be provided at cottages with Sykes. I was told that owners decide what they do and do not provide, as Sykes is only the agent. There is no basic standard set.

When you informed us of the missing items we asked our cleaner to drop everything and bring the items to the cottage, which I presumed she had done. You then informed us you had found the hand towels in the airing cupboard and bath towels were on both beds ready for use. We have now installed liquid soap dispensers. We have never been asked for soap before. We always ensure that there is plenty of cleaning materials in the kitchen cupboard. Hope the Welcome pack was of use. Don't worry bout the teapot lid as we have now replaced it. The whole village has a parking issue but Roses Lane has enough space for the 4 cottages on it. Property Owner

Was a really nice cottage very central for everything however there was rather a lot of bugs the grill had not been cleaned parking was a bit difficult at times and on stripping the beds before we left I discovered that the quilt in the main bedroom and the mattress cover in the other bedroom were very badly stained also the shower in the en suite was very hot and you could not turn the temperature down I think the bottom was broken but overall we enjoyed our stay

So glad you liked the cottage and enjoyed your stay we always love it there. Sorry about the hiccough with the bedding. It has been resolved. You mentioned the problem with woodpigs. Apparently the whole village has this problem and we have sorted it as far as we can. We have been in touch with and infestation company and have been assured that the little things are harmless isopods. Property Owner

  • "Langton Herring is a gem, beautiful gardens and countryside."

Locals friendly. I didn't realise that the name 'Stepping Stones' related to the interior of the cottage. There are about 4 different levels on the ground floor so not for the visually impaired. Well laid out although the under stairs seating not really usable. Fell over the coffee table soon after arrival as it is only about 12 inches off the floor, I still bear the scar on my shin. The main issue I have with the accommodation is the poor level of cleanliness. I have owned and rented out holiday accommodation and know too well what is involved in maintaining a good standard and do not make the following criticisms lightly. I noted that on a past review others have commented on the lack of cleanliness with one person blaming the previous rental tenants. Fair enough if the owners are prepared to be reliant for their star rating based on the holiday makers willingness and abilities to clean up when they leave. It however does not make good business sense. Cleanliness is fundamental to a holiday let and there is a six hour period between lets to get it right. When we arrived it appeared that someone had been in the process of cleaning the kitchen but was called away. The washing- up bowl was partially filled with water in which there were dirty cleaning brushes, a slime covered utensil basket and a cloth with food bits on it. Not nice. The draining board also has food bits on it and the cutlery drawer, including cutlery, food cupboard had to be cleaned. Fortunately we always take cleaning materials with us. The kitchen bin had food stuck to the interior and downstairs was alive with pea bugs. Limescale is obviously an issue and the chrome fittings, taps, shower heads, overflow outlets on basins were encrusted. The plastic bath mat was filthy as was the shower screen on the bath. Cleaning the place before we left was difficult as there is no soft broom for the downstairs hard floors. Buy one! The vacuum cleaner is a 'Henry' unwieldy and cumbersome. It also stinks when in use. It is simply not up to the job and needs to be replaced with a cordless stick cleaner. The rear garden has a a pleasant patio reached by steps, one solar bulb lights the way! There is no seating lower down. Fortunately the weather was good during our stay so we were out a lot. I'd go back to Langton Herring but would stay elsewhere.

So sorry for the cleaner problem and it has been addressed, and a change has been arranged. We discovered that the cleaner had temporary help with inexperienced staff. The previous owner converted the cottage which included the raised floor in the sitting room. The coffee table was hand made locally and we thought rather sweet but apologise for your trip. The 'Henry' hoover was brand new so cannot understand why it smelt but we have since checked it and replaced the bag. It is a 200 year old cottage in a lovely location which you did remark on. Thank you for your comments. They do enable us remote owners to rectify problems ready for the next holiday makers. Property Owner

  • "The property location is perfect for exploring Weymouth and the surrounding areas."

Access to the SWCP is easy and the little village its located in is beautiful. Unfortunately, the cleanliness of the cottage left an awful lot to be desired. It was evident the previous guest had a dog as the downstairs of the house was covered in dog hair. Under the dining table was disgusting and clear the chairs hadn't been pulled out to be vacuumed. The rug in the lounge was also covered in hair. The smell of dogs was also very strong. So much so we had to go out and buy a scented candle. We attempted to vacuum the floor, but the smell from the vacuum made it even worse. The property also has a big problem with bugs. The entrance to the property was littered with hundreds of dead woodlice by the end of the week and they'd also found their way into the cottage. The shower in the downstairs bathroom didn't work upon arrival as it was so clogged up with limescale. I removed this to give it a scrub to get it working again as needed to bathe our 4-year-old. We ended up checking out a day early our daughter really didn't like the place with all the bugs. All in all a disappointing stay. The property has a lot of potential, but the cleaners need to up their game to make it suitable for people with children.

I think you are prone to exaggeration concerning the wood lice problem. There can’t have been hundreds in the porch area. I know there are a few occasionally creeping in but it’s a problem experienced in the whole village. A pest control company informed us that the little creatures aren’t dangerous and are no threat to human health. They may appear a nuisance but are easily disposed of. Because of that exaggeration I am sure all the other complaints are somewhat exaggerated. It is a dog friendly cottage for guests who want their dogs with them so maybe a few smells. Our cleaner who cleaned up after you left said the place was in a bit of a state and every towel [12 plus] had been used. We paid her extra for the excessive time it took to prepare for the next visitors. Despite that we are sorry you didn’t enjoy your stay. The party who stayed immediately after you posted a glowing report on the state of the cottage. AJW Property Owner

On arrival, everything was to hand as the owners had helpfully advised in an advance email. Unfortunately, the heating had not been left on since the previous occupiers had left. However, the cottage soon warmed up once the controls had been located in the upstairs airing cupboard. We spent the following lunchtime at The Elm Tree pub just around the corner which served a variety of delicious roast Sunday lunches. We also took the fantastic coastal road to Hive Beach at Burton Bradstock on at least two occasions which our dogs thoroughly enjoyed as well as many local walks towards Fleet and the coastal footpaths.

  • "First booking with Sykes."

Very smooth and kept up to date. Can't really ask for anything more. Stepping Stones is a lovely cottage in a lovely village. The owners sent us a more detailed write up before we arrived which was very useful. We noted that parking cropped up in a few reviews and on google maps it looked like it would be an issue, but it wasn't. We had no problems at all. Really enjoyed our stay. The Elm Tree pub is excellent. Our first visit was on a Thursday (in January) and we were the only people there and it is really a restaurant rather than a pub and the food was not cheap. However we went back for drinks on Saturday and it was buzzing and there was a cosy area to sit so we wanted to go back for lunch on Sunday but it was fully booked. However we turned up on Sunday anyway and even though it was rammed they fitted us in for what was one of the best roasts I have had and the service was great.

  • "If you want to have a 'get away from it all' holiday this is the place to be."

Apart from the fabulous pub behind (which caused no distraction) there is little else to be found apart from stunning walks, birdsong, owls hooting and silence! The patio out back was lovely to sit and read with a cup of tea and our dogs. When the evening draws in you can cosy up with a book or the Alexa dot and chill out. The cottage is so so quiet. Very cosy and perfect for the two of us and our shihtzu's. Obviously being in the countryside you have to accept that bugs and cobwebs are part and parcel of the area. You definitely need a torch at night if you venture out on foot. It's literally pitch black but you are rewarded with the most amazing stargazing ever! Weymouth and Abbotsbury are not too far away if you want to dip in and out of civilisation for provisions. The farm shop in Portesham whilst costly is lovely. When the weather was inclement we just pulled the curtains and settled down with a book and a glass of wine, no heating needed.

Thank you for your lovely feedback, the property itself does have motion sensor lighting outside but yes we would recommend a flashlight for any country lanes outside our control. Thank you also for the high cleanliness and comfort scores, much appreciated. Property Owner

  • "Very pretty nicely decorated cottage, in a picturesque spot, with lots of walks around the village and beyond."

Well equipped kitchen, and modern bathrooms. Negatives were the beds which weren’t very comfortable and the lounge where you couldn’t lounge. The sofa is OK but you can’t really use the backless lounger as it’s under the stairs. So it is OK but really not comfy at all. The showers were underpowered too. No heating on as we were instructed not to alter the timers (so strangely the heating only seemed to come on twice during the week late at night). Although probably functional, we didn’t feel it practical to use the wood burner as it’s in the dining area with the table too close - but there wasn’t any wood to use it anyway. There are a couple of portable heaters but these don’t help to warm the bathrooms and the heated towel rails are part of the central heating system. Limited towels - and bath towels provided rather than bath sheets - so I would recommend you take your own if you prefer a little more luxury. Parking seems to be an issue in the village- but we were always able to park just down the road from the cottage (unfortunately illegally as you have to park on a junction but it is the widest part of the road). The villagers were friendly though and lots of dog friendly people. I missed there being a visitor’s book with hints and tips on things to do and places to eat (Athelhampton - really lovely & nice to eat there, Abbotsbury Gardens recommended, local pub Elm Inn expensive but pleasant and very loud if busy). And there were hardly any brochures on things to do in the area which I missed as it is useful to be able to browse through. It would have been much appreciated if there had been a welcome pack for a cup of tea too as we were desperate for a cuppa by the time we got there and there’s no local shop. Although the cottage was tidy with clean bathrooms and kitchen I would recommend a deeper clean in the lounge and porch - there was an old crisp packet and clumps of dog hair in the lounge when we pulled out the heaters and there were lots of wood lice and spiders webs. We were confused about the bins too as there was a message on the fridge which contradicted the email about which bins to put out. So we just copied the neighbours. Overall it’s a nice enough place to spend a week and it was available for a very reasonable cost.

If I was to be picky, the only surprise was how unfriendly the locals were, no one was keen to respond to a greeting, only offering criticism whilst we unloaded the cars.

The trouble is when first arriving at the cottage and trying to unload your belongings you have to block the road. Usually this is not a problem but occasionally some other resident is prevented from driving past. I explain all this to our punters. It has happened to us too but I apologies to the driver and move my car further along where there is room to park and other cars to pass.
