  • "The cottage was beautiful the welcome hamper was a lovely surprise made us smile."

The only detail that was lacking was where to dispose of rubbish, there was a old style dust bin in the garden but there was no wheelie bin or nearby bin, clear location if where to dispose of rubbish is something I would suggest to be placed into the booklet.

  • "Only stayed for a short 2 night weekend but really enjoyed the cottage."

Our party was 4 adults so I searched for a long time and Firkin Cottage was the only one that seemed to have 2 bathrooms and a downstairs loo. The house is well equipped and the welcome pack of tea, coffee, biscuits, chocolate and a pint of milk plus loo rolls, washing up liquid, dishwasher tabs and dishcloths were very much appreciated. The cottage is in a fantastic position and only a short walk to the harbour, the coast, and Nothe Fort. No parking but his wasn’t a problem- we unloaded on the street(very narrow) and then drove to the Nothe Car Park just a 5 minute walk away- it was easy to extend our parking using the JustPark app. Having said that if you don’t have a car and want to just potter about in Weymouth you couldn’t find a better property. The cottage garden is sweet and south facing with table and chairs and a rotary drier if you need to do washing. Our only slightly negative comments would be most of the Venetian blinds have seen better days and are quite dirty and quite a few wouldn’t tilt properly ,the 2 double bedrooms on the front of the property get the morning sun so curtains in addition to the white blinds would be better otherwise it is light at 4.a.m in the summer ! The shower on the top floor ( of 3 floors) could do with an intense clean around the doors and trim. We contacted Sykes beforehand to find out if there was an iron and ironing board ( not stated in details) as we were going to a Wedding…home now and still waiting for the reply !! In case you are wondering there’s is one ! All in all we felt it was good value and spacious enough for 4 adults, and would definitely return on another trip to Weymouth.

  • "We have stayed in Firkin cottage before probably 8 years ago."

This year the property looks tired. It needs a good paint! The outside furniture looks tired. The garden is overgrown and needs maintenance. There is no parking permit which was advertised when we booked so that limited what we could do.Basically we couldn't move our car for 2 weeks!! The set up of the bedrooms were good and the general facilities available in the cottage were excellent. Everything worked well. The location was excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Many thanks for your review. We do regularly have the property painted but due to the narrow staircase the walls do tend to get bashed by suitcases and quickly get marked despite being freshly painted! Unfortunately the council do not allow holiday property owners to supply parking permits any longer however parking in the local car parks a short walk away is possible. Property Owner

  • "We have stayed at Firkin for the last 5 years and love it so much."

This time however dustbin full of rubbish bags from previous holiday makers...these were not taken in the 2 weeks of our stay so flies had a lovely time. We recycled everything at Asda so didn't add to the bin as obviously already full. Glasses, cutlery, mugs and teapot filthy. There was also something nasty splashed up the wall in 1st double bedrooms bathroom. At the end of our stay we striped bed of linen and one pillow was very stained...disgusting. There were no small bags placed within the small wastepaper bins and half used toilet rolls in each toilet. Not great and quite sad....time to go somewhere else.

Its like home from home. Close to everything that's going on but in a quite area. We love staying there and will be back again. There is only 1 thing for the maintainas person. There is a small leek in the downstairs toilet, behind the loo over a couple of days you get a puddle. Thanks for a great stay see you again soon.

Thankyou for your repeat visit and wonderful review. So pleased to hear you enjoy staying at Firkin cottage and we look forward to welcoming you again soon. The downstairs toilet has now been fixed. Many apologies for the inconvenience. We also now have a lovely new sofa in the lounge. Property Owner

  • "We enjoyed a lovely stay at Firkin Cottage during September."

The cottage was very clean, comfortable and was furnished lovely. It had everything for our needs. Upon the evening of our arrival we noticed that the clip on the dishwasher tablet dispensing unit was broken. After reporting this, it was attended to without delay. Great customer service from Dreams Cottages! The cottage was in close walking distance to the harbour area and also Nothe Gardens overlooking the sea. It was a good base for exploring the area and overall we had a really enjoyable stay/holiday! NB: Safety - Although it is mentioned in the listing about the steep & narrow cottage style stairs, please be aware that they also twist around onto each floor without much handrail and therefore we found them quite awkward to navigate and a bit of a mission. In addition, the hallway is tiled and there is a small step in the entrance hall just short of the front door which we had to be mindful about. Perhaps some sort of hazard tape could be applied to the step to highlight it ~ just a suggestion.

There are a few minor things which could do with being fixed just for info: Sinks need unblocking Dishwasher tablet drawer broken and doesn’t shut Upper bathroom grout damaged Back door needs straightening on hinges, difficult to shut Rear Outdoor light doesn’t work Upstairs bedside lamp doesn’t work properly Downstairs toilet leaks water on the floor. Aside from these the property is great and these didn’t really detract from our enjoyment during the holiday.

We are glad you had a lovely stay. We have had the issues that you raised investigated and no problems have been identified with the back door, dishwasher, downstairs toilet or lamp. They all appear to be in working order. We saw that one of the sinks was slightly blocked and have attended to this. Many thanks Property Owner

  • "Firkin Cottage is a fantastic base for a holiday in Weymouth."

It is a charming old cottage which is in a quiet spot despite being close to the harbour and the sea. It is well equipped and very well presented, providing a comfortable space for a family. Helpfully, a parking permit was provided for the local carpark (a couple of minutes walk up towards the Nothe). Although not a criticism of the property, it is worth noting that the doorways (as is to be expected in an old cottage) are very low, so it may not suit the very tall. Sykes' communication was clear and helpful both before and during the trip, which helped facilitate a smooth experience. We loved our time there and would definitely return.

  • "We had a few 'niggles' when we arrived; en-suite bathroom sink was very slow to drain, top floor bedroom window could not be opened and none of the keys provided would work, the shower door handle was very loose, the front door swelled so much in the rain that we really struggled to open it from the inside, the washing machine had a lot of black mould in the rubber seal."

However, all of these issues were dealt with swiftly on the same day when we reported them to the local Dream Cottages office (excluding the washing machine as I cleaned this out myself so I could use it). Maintaining the water temperature in the shower was difficult, the water pressure was brilliant but would constantly change from just right to freezing or boiling. Otherwise we had a lovely stay at Firkin Cottage, it's large, clean and comfortable (the bathrooms can be a bit claustrophobic as there are no windows, the top floor shower cubicle especially), in a brilliant position within walking distance of the harbour, shops and beach, and we always managed to get a car parking space on Nothe Car Park, just up the road. Suggestions for additions to facilities - please add some shelves in the bathrooms and shower areas. There is no where to put shower gel/shampoo and all the other bathroom paraphernalia required for six people, ranging from a 2 year old to great-grandmother. Personal preference would be for blackout blinds in the bedrooms as the Venetian ones don't prevent early morning light coming in.

Unfortunately we lost my dad, very suddenly and at a very young age whilst away on holiday 5 years ago. We aim to be in Weymouth on the 14th July every year. Each and every year, your cottages exceed expectations. They make each year perfect. Every cottage we’ve ever stopped in has been amazing. (Firkin will always be my favourite too!) ..booking with Sykes was easy and hassle free, with clear options on cancellation if we went back into lockdown as well (in fact we had booked over Christmas 2020 as well but owing to the lockdown this had to be cancelled...Sykes refunded quickly, efficiently and without any hassle whatsoever). The cottage was wonderful...clean, tidy and really nicely furnished with everything we needed. The location was perfect for Weymouth, being on the quieter side near Brewers Quay, away from the crowds but literally a stones throw from Newtons Cove, which is one of our favourite spots in Weymouth. We had one really small issue with the heating.. I guess being first in after lockdown it hadn't been used that much so the battery needed replacing on the thermostat...but this was dealt with by Dream Cottages (who manage this letting) really quickly on the same day and without any problems. Overall I cannot recommend Sykes enough, all advisers I spoke to on the phone were polite, friendly and helpful, it made the whole experience wonderful, and we shall definitely be using them again!

  • "We really enjoyed our break in Weymouth."

It’s a pretty little place and the people are very friendly and helpful. The cottage Is within easy walking distance of the quay- less than 5 minutes, where there is an abundance of places to eat, have coffee etc In the current Covid situation it’s best to book restaurants in advance. Re the cottage. There is nowhere really to stop and drop off luggage etc on your arrival and equally on the day you leave and I would say it’s slightly inconvenient to have to park a car a 10 minute walk away and move things from there into the cottage. It’s good to have a parking permit though. The cottage itself was very nice. Downstairs is a very good sized kitchen, diner, living area. There are 2 floors above. It’s useful to note that the stairs are narrow and steep and in my opinion not great for small children and anyone with any mobility issues. The bedrooms vary in size but are reasonably equipped and the beds are comfortable. The shower screen in the en-suite bathroom could do with replacing. The cottage was spotless in all the places you would want it to be. Occasionally it might be an idea to wipe the skirting boards and hoover down the side and round the back of furniture (bit dusty with some bits of paper, when I dropped something down the back of a chest of drawers and had to pick it up). The dishwasher also needed salt and rinse aid- not sure if that’s checked between guests? The Dreams cottage staff and service was great. We had a bit of an issue with the key and door knob. The lady in the office was very pleasant and helpful. They sent someone out within hours. Rectified the problem and phoned me to let me know the outcome. Excellent service. This feedback is given in the hope that it is constructive and helpful for the company and people looking to stay in a cottage. None of the little niggles detracted from our stay in Firkin Cottage. My friend and I are fit and well. There are several walks that can be taken from the cottage- both away from the town towards Portland or along the promenade etc We used the bus service and so long as you have the correct timetable, the buses are a good way to get around the area. We had a great time in Weymouth. Enjoyed staying in Firkin Cottage and would definitely book with Sykes cottages again.

  • "The previous occupants had left the property in an extremely messy state."

The cleaners had to work very hard very quickly to try to bring it up to scratch but throughout the first few days of our stay, more evidence of the previous occupants' abuse of the property emerged. Live crabs had obviously brought into the property from crabbing trips to the harbour. We found a baby crab dead on the carpet one morning (it must have crawled out during the night from under furniture). Crab and lobster carcasses had been flung into the garden area as had a kitchen tray (possibly used as a frisbee!). We all felt the property needed some tlc and possibly a replacement sofa. Torches had always been available in the bedrooms in the past. This time there were none. The big holly bush and overgrown shrubs in the garden do need to be cut down or back to allow for proper drying space; it does accommodate 5 people and that can mean a lot of drying off. Finally, we couldn't get the central heating to kick in, despite following the instructions provided. Having said all this, we love the location of this property, thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be back in a Dream Cottages property the same time next year.

The property

A beautiful, fully renovated cottage just a short walk from the Brewers Quay and Newton's Cove area of Weymouth.

Firkin Cottage is perfect for a tranquil holiday set slightly apart from the bustle of the main town while still very close to the Old Harbour and Hope Square.

The standard of finish inside this property is exceptional and attention to detail obvious.

The beautiful enclosed cottage garden has a patio area complete with garden furniture, where you can enjoy the sun or eat alfresco at any time of the day.

Named after the traditional 72-pint barrel used at the now converted local Devenish Brewery, Firkin, is a popular cottage of our more discerning guests due to its modern presentation and favoured location. The beautiful Isle of Portland, loved by water sports enthusiasts, is just a short drive away.

Chesil beach visitor centre offers a glimpse to the area’s wildlife, you can walk up the shingle beach and enjoy observing the waves crashing dramatically to the shore.

On the less than perfect days it is well worth the effort to visit. A 20 minute drive further will take you to the wonderfully beautiful village of Abbotsbury where you will find Abbotsbury Swannery.

This is the only place in the world where you are able to walk through the heart of a colony of nesting Mute Swans.

Sheltered by Ridgeway hills this historic village inspired a few books of Dorset’s famous writer Thomas Hardy.

From the town centre there are numerous places to visit within walking distance: St. Catherine’s Chapel, St. Nicholas Church, Chesil Beach, Sub-tropical gardens.

If you feel energetic enough a walk to Abbotsbury Castle, the Iron Age hillfort, is a must of the stunning scenery around.

This wonderful house is the perfect place to stay with friends or have a family gathering and discover beautiful Dorset coast.

About the location

BREWERS QUAY HARBOUR

Dorchester 8.7 miles; West Lulworth 15.8 miles

Brewers Quay is the old Victorian brewery situated at the heart of the harbour, in Weymouth, Dorset. Much of the grade II listed complex and surrounding brewery buildings date from the late 1800 early 1900’s and many have stones inlaid commemorating their construction year. This area is now a popular destination with many restaurants, café and bars, creating a vibrant culture, where you can relax with a drink and watch the world go by. Tucked away down the harbourside streets, you will find original Tudor harbour buildings, estimated to have been built in 1600 and well worth a visit, with a very interesting history to share. You will also find the Weymouth Museum, with some incredible exhibitions, and the harbour is also home to the lifting bridge, where you can watch the luxury yachts head out to sea, and then walk over the bridge to the town's winding streets of boutique shops and the seafront esplanade and beach. There is more to this seaside town than meets the eye; Brewers Quay is a much-loved holiday destination in Weymouth!
