Great location in a beautiful village. Comfy beds, lovely bath, hot water, very clean. Thanks for the welcome gifts and having a Christmas tree was a bonus. Only gripes were lack of oven gloves, needed more tea towels and lighting could be brighter in the kitchen. Overall we had a wonderful stay and would recommend the cottage.

  • "It was obvious that no one had been to check up the property before we arrived."

the heating was not on so the house was really cold, not the sort of welcpme you want on a cold wet novemebr day . having waited for awhile for it to come on, thinking it might be on a timer it became obvious it had broken. in many other lets we have stayed in , in the winter months the agent/owner has obviously come round shortly before and put heating on, even put a light on so when arrive it is cosy. the heating was fixed fairly quickly however the house is not a warm house and even with heater and log fire going the house never got warm before we went to bed . so a cold and disappointing start to the break, and again as we were not allowed to change any settings the following evening was also a cold evening as by the time the house any sort of heat in it , it was bedtime. For the amount of rent being charged the heater settings being used are just mean , and money pinching by the owner!!

Thankyou for taking the time to leave feedback .Unfortunately you seem to have experienced a power cut , not uncommon for Nunney, I'm afraid and it's rural position at the bottom of a valley, which threw out all of our carefully planned heating and hot water presets . These are set to be on all evening from late afternoon and from 6 in the morning, so you were , I'm afraid, extremely unlucky . I am not sure if you found the heater we leave in the wardrobe for such events, but evidently you used the free logs, and were able to contact the caretaker.I can certainly attest to the fact that when the heating settings work as they should , the 18" thick walls of the cottage would keep you very warm .We ask guests not to tamper with the settings as it has damaged the electric central heating system when guests have done this in the past ..leaving them without heating for several days , while parts and labour are awaited . It is certainly not about cost, for , as you may have observed, the house had been wholly redecorated in the weeks before your arrival , and the kitchen, carpets and windows are less than a year old. I am sorry that you were just unlucky it seems and I hope you were nevertheless able to enjoy your break . Property Owner

2, When I arrived window handle in bedroom was broken rendering house unlockable, Busy Bees dealt with it swiftly and efficiently- gold star to them. 3, None of appliances have any evidence of being PAT tested and toaster set off trip. 4, Bathroom blind heavily stained when rolled down. 5, If you want people to leave it clean please service hoover ( it worked but not very well) and provide spare binbags & more cleaning materials. 6, Spout on caffetiere broken. 7, Please be more upfront in description of how far the house is from the road and that you need two free hands to open each door....honestly, a total pain when shifting bags. It would be near impossible for person with disability or carrying baby. Busy Bees who are contracted to do cleaning , and maintenace were great at communicating and helpful. Sykes appear to just do the advertising and booking.

Thank you so much for your feedback which is invaluable to me as an owner in seeking to give guests the best experience during their stay. You have discovered the downside of idyllic peaceful rural living !: you are some way away from the road and nature provides challenges in terms of wildlife seeking shelter as the nights get colder. We always try to be one step ahead on the latter and have taken steps to investigate and deal with anything . The toaster was less than 12 months old but has now been replaced .Thank you for reporting that . Thanks also for reporting the window lock and for your attempt to clean up. That was appreciated though we do not expect guests to do a professional cleaning job ..that is what Busy Bees are paid for ! Property Owner

My wife loved the kitchen and dining area. It was an Ideal location for getting about. The locals were friendly. The only drawback for us was the stairs in the property. Great care is needed on them especially coming down them!! My wife had a fall on them. Apart from that it was one of the best cottages we had stayed in.

Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback on the cottage . We are so glad your wife's fall didnt ruin your holiday . We do warn guests in the property description that the stairs are steep - a feature of the very old small property , but nevertheless it must have been a shock and we were relieved to hear from our caretakers at the time that she was ok . We will be replacing the spindle broken in the fall of course , and will ensure future guests are made aware and take every care . Thankyou again. Property Owner

It was tastefully furnished throughout and the woodburning stove provided for cosy evenings by the fire. The courtyard garden was very tranquil and a lovely place to sit, eat, relax and unwinding whilst listening to bird song. The setting couldn't be more perfect, Nunney is an idyllic, picturesque village, Nunney Castle surrrounded by it Moat is a lovely place to sit and it is practically on the doorstep! The George Inn, offered a delicious homecooked menu from 5:30 pm and the short walk via the Castle and crossing the small wooded bridge over the stream was a real pleasure and also meant you could enjoy a meal and drink without having to think about driving. Nunney was a great base, we enjoyed the Village Fayre and visited Wells, Stourhead, Frome, Cheddar Gorge, Glastonbury, Salisbury and Bath, all within a short drive. I would definiately recommend staying at The Hermitage.

It was just myself and two children, so the size was no problem at all for us. Everyone we met was friendly, we spoke a a few times to a neighbour that was a couple of doors and he was always a pleasure to talk to! The kitchen had everything we needed, so cooking our meals with no issue ever. I was happy with how the garden had a door on it due to my son having additional needs and my daughter being young still, I felt at ease if they were pottering around in the garden that they were safe and secure. We all slept comfortably, my son had dibs on the living area, but there was enough chairs for us all to sit on and feel cosy to watch a film. We were never short of anything to do, we enjoyed visiting Nunney castle right by us, feeding the ducks and a long walk on the public footpath. If you want to visit other places a car is definitely needed, we were able to enjoy day trips in to Frome town centre/park, longleat safari, the fleet air arm museum, Weston super-mare, splash down water park… gutted we never got to visit the Jurassic coast because our stay went so quickly. All shops are only a short drive away also and they have a little local shop if in need of something quick. Would honestly recommend a stay here, as we really enjoyed ourselves, thank you :)

Unfortunately there is loads of recycling and rubbish from previous guests that hasn't been removed. Also the outside lights do not work, making it difficult to navigate from the dark passage to the property and open up. Will certainly like to stay there again

With apologies, I think the Christmas period caused some hiatus with our refuse collections. As for the dark passage , as this is not owned by us , we have to rely on battery sensor lights (and guests' own phone torches) but we are continually looking to see how we can improve the situation Property Owner

The sofa was a little uncomfortable to sit on as was the rattan chair, for the cost of the property for the 3 nights we expected a few more logs, we were only provided enough for 1 fire and weren’t made aware of where we could get more. Also we were only provided with 1.5 rolls of toilet paper, over the 3 nights with 4 people, it just wasn’t enough, again, with the price of the property little things like this was lacking. On the plus, the welcome basket with loaf of bread, tea, coffee, sugar and biscuits were a lovely touch, the cottage was very clean and tidy and warm over all and the instructions to get into the property were spot on, no issues with that. The village of Nunney was delightful and we got to explore it when storm Dennis finally disappeared and we went for dinner at the local pub which was also lovely and welcoming. We would book again.

  • "The information from sykes was up to date and provided quickly."

Also appreciated the second email with a reminder of key collection e.t.c. I would book a holiday with sykes again, but unfortunately the cottage itself did not meet our expectations. It was in a lovely village, beautiful position next to the castle and the pub round the corner was excellent! First impressions were of a idyllic cottage, quaint and cosy, but it had not been cleaned particularly well from the last guests. We arrived and went to make a cup of tea - there was a green, circular thing in the kettle - we were unsure if it was some sort of a limescale remover, if it should be in there or not in there and quite how long it had been in there - if it should be there, maybe they need to let people know with the information they provide in the cottage. So we used a pan to boil our water instead - after cleaning it, as there was old food stuck to the inside of it. I also had to sort through the mugs in the cupboard to find ones that were clean, as old food was stuck to the inside of some of them too and a lot of them were chipped. There were also food stains on the blankets on the chairs in the front room, which looked as though they would probably come off if they were washed. The larger bedroom also had short hairs all over one of the pillows, as it was the second pillow down, it looked like they had just switched pillows over to put the clean one on top. On top of that I shook the duvet before getting into bed and two dead spiders and a lot of dust came flying out. My mum slept in the other bedroom and the underside of her duvet was covered in a lot of long black hairs, (not just one or two), again it appeared the duvet had just been flipped over from the last guests. As well as that she had an old tissue under the bed from previous guests. Also surprised that they supply two loo rolls but expect you to replace what you have used ready for the next guests. It was a shame the cleanliness was not up to scratch, as it was a lovely place and in a perfect position for us. That is also the only reason the facilities were marked low, because we felt we had to clean things to use them and felt unclean getting into the beds. If it was cleaned properly it would have been perfect and received excellent feedback.

Nunney itself is well positioned for travel to outlying areas such as Glastonbury, Stonehenge, Salisbury and so forth. The cottage is well stocked with cooking equipment, books and DVDs, and there is on-street parking outside or nearby. The castle at the end of the small street is a definite bonus! · There were some touches that took a bit of the shine off the place: - The guest book was filled with people praising the warm welcome from Flo and her husband, and this meant that we felt a bit short-changed as there was no such welcome for us. - The instructions for getting the keys and getting past the door code were not sent to us, leading to me calling the company that runs the place and having to wait while it was all worked out before getting in. - The bathroom was made for very small people. To appreciate the bath you needed to be 5' or less, and the shower was only an attachment to the bath with no screen, so there was no way to stand to have a shower. The toilet dripped internally. - It is an old place, so the doors throughout don't shut too well, and thus there's absolutely no privacy for conversations anywhere. - The walls in the main bedroom had been repainted, but the bed hadn't been moved to allow it so the painting stopped just behind the headboard, which was a shame given the care that had gone into the rest of the place. The side cabinet was similarly painted only a certain way inside, for the sake of appearance rather than a complete job. - The only things that were provided were a lot of cleaning things, an almost finished container of hand soap and two toilet rolls. A little more in that department would have been appreciated, as it meant that one of the first jobs was to go out and get more things to stock up, such as soap etc.

On our arrival, Flo & Terry were waiting to greet us & showed us around downstairs & left us a vase of flowers, which was a nice touch. Due to its age, there is a slight fusty smell, even in the hot weather. Therefore we felt that the property could do with a freshen up, with new carpets, (main bedroom & lounge carpets both had stains) plus a new sofa & chair in order to avoid having throws over the furniture, which were too warm in the heat & untidy looking. Flo pointed out that there was a brand new hob & oven, as well as other new kitchen appliances, so some improvements have begun. The garden is secluded & peaceful, but again needs some tlc to enhance its appearance, as parts are overgrown. Again, it just needs tidying up & a few pots with flowering plants would help to brighten it up & make it more welcoming. Overall a pleasant stay with time to relax in this sleepy village. If you need WiFi to help plan your days out, forget it as the place is deliberately without this facility & depending on your network provider, there can be no service.

About the location

NUNNEY

Frome 3 miles; Bath 18 miles; Glastonbury 18 miles.

Arguably one of Somerset's prettiest villages, Nunney is dominated by England's smallest castle, built in the 14th century and surrounded by a picturesque moat. Sadly ruined during the Civil War, the castle still commands an attractive, much-photographed, centre piece to the village. Local amenities include a tea room, shop, newsagent and a pub serving good food and real ales, whilst the annual August street fayre is well-known for its carnival atmosphere! The nearby town of Frome offers a good selection of shops and restaurants as well as regular events at The Merlin Theatre. Alternatively visit Longleat House, gardens and safari park, or Stourhead, both a short drive, whilst ancient Glastonbury, Wells cathedral, Wookey Hole, and the majestic cities of Bath and Salisbury are all easily accessible. A picturesque Somerset village providing a most interesting holiday location at any time of the year.
