"We are both well travelled and cottage holidayers with our dogs and its that knowledge we bring to this review."
Lovely quaint cottage. Had done all research on property so nothing unexpected. Well equipped bright kitchen. Garden, enclosed even for the sneakiest of dogs. Due to time of year not much sun in the garden due to neighbouring trees, shrubs. Living room full of character, electric woodburner set in inglenook. Plenty of games, puzzles in cupboard. No complaints about dog smell. Infact room was well scented with airfresheners and perfumed reeds (possibly due to negative previous post). Only issue with room is very dark due to the room low and lack of sunlight. Suggestion would be higher wattage bulbs. Down stairs shower room is just that, a shower and toilet room.Who would want to swing a cat!! Adequate Downstairs bedroom, 2 x singles. Never used as only used upstairs. Again adequate Upstairs bathroom, powerful shower over bath. Bedroom, very comfy large warm bed. Location. Amazing walking areas around the village and coast line. If we had one criticism and I use the term loosely, lack of hostelrys within walking distance. Smugglers Inn nearest but that is a good mile away down an unlit road. But a pint and glass of wine at £20 a time, you wouldn't want to have to many rounds in there! Parking. Very narrow street but managed to park outside property without any issue. All in all, not surprises as had done plenty of research before booking. NB Please put a serviceable cover on the ironing board. Small milk in fridge instead of milk pots. Higher wattage bulbs in living room Soap dispensers rather than small soaps in packs.

"Having holidayed with Sykes for the previous 2 years we had high hopes for Honeybun Cottage."
Sadly what we were greeted with was hugely disappointing. As you open the front door you are greeted by a strong dog odour. We expected this but not to the degree of this. The living room was filthy. The carpet was dirty and there were dog hairs everywhere. The room was grubby and not particularly pleasant. Similar comments apply to the downstairs bedroom and bathroom. Both are far too small and again dirty! The general decor is in poor condition and in desperate need of a refresh. The garden is a lovely size but we were greeted by dog poo in the lawn. Unacceptable. The garden is described as dog safe. It most certainly isn’t. The back of the garden only had a mesh fence, which was not secure. We spent hours blocking holes in the fence. Our dog still escaped into next door. Other sub standard elements included: An old and loose ironing board . The hoover was broken The curtain hook at the front door is hanging off the wall The TV areal upstairs was hanging by a loose copper thread and was broken. The bedroom window was so filthy we had to wash them. The upstairs shower screen was loose, covering the floor in water every time we showered. The downstairs shower door does not shut, again, covering the floor in water. The wooden garden furniture is rotten.

"Upon arrival we were greated with dog hair covering the living room floor and sofa It took us a good hour to hoover and clean the living area."
THe throws had to be taken off the sofa as they were coverd in dog hair and had a offensive odur.THere were cobwebs and spiders in most rooms. The downstairs bathroom was dirty and had no room to swing a cat.Honey bun cottage needs a good spring clean as its not a enjoyable place to stay like this.also there had been dog poo left in the garden from the previous guests.

"This is the second time we’ve stayed at this cottage."
Whilst the downstairs bathroom is very small, it’s nice to have a second bathroom in a 2 bed cottage. We found the cottage very comfortable and loved the outdoor space plus tables etc. great for the dogs as the garden is enclosed. The area is fabulous and love the pretty village and multitude of walks directly out from the cottage. The house could be a little cleaner in my view, some of the dishes weren’t too clean and some cobwebs/hairs around the house. But overall would recommend this cottage.

"It’s a nice little cottage."
Every necessary things of a home was available. It would be great to inform in the website that 2 bedrooms are in two different floors . Because we had to rearrange whole sleeping system so that we can keep an eye on our child with epilepsy. Single beds are extremely small. Didn’t like to find animal fur everywhere. Cobweb and spiders were in the bedrooms, sitting room and the stairs. Sofas and the blankets on the sofa’s were bit smelly. I think cottage could have been better cleaned.

"I absolutely love this cottage."
I com here every year sometimes twice. It is perfect if you have dogs, the beautiful long garden and excellent walks around the area. I bring my 92 year old mother and the facilities on the ground floor are perfect. Downstairs bedroom and shower/toilet. The master bedroom upstairs s is a dream with the bathroom off. Whether you fancy a relaxing bath or a shower. The lounge is light and airy. I do believe a darker carpet would be nice but that's the interior decorator in me. Trust me you won't be disappointed it you book this cottage.
Thank you as always. Delighted that you enjoed your stay. Property Owner

"The property boasted a feature fireplace and the fireplace was shown in the photos."
This was the only thing we wanted was a fireplace this break so imagine our disappointment when it was not in use! This should be clear on the details also you should put a warning about the height my husband really hurt his head on entrance to the cottage! The rest of the stay was perfect lovely area clean cottage .

"I really liked staying at Honeybun ."
The kitchen is well equipped, the beds are comfortable and I really appreciated the efficient central heating, especially as the weather was chilly. The Wi-Fi worked really well, which was great. Thank you.

"We had to cut our holiday short due to family reasons but ceilings are very low ..."
We had to cut our holiday short due to family reasons but ceilings are very low hit my head numerous times spent most of our time retrieving next doors dog who kept fouling in the garden very insecure garden and quite over grown being disabled guests parking was absolutely terrible and was worried our car would get damaged not ideally located so if you bring a dog or have any mobility issues i would definitely not recommend honey bun cottage we were very disappointed

"Dear little cottage in a lovely village."
..enjoyed our stay. Just be aware garden is not quite fully enclosed...we did find some fencing which we managed to block most of it off.
-
"The garden was very over grown."
It didn't look like it had been done for quite a few weeks. We had to take off some large bramble branches which were at face height. We found stale bread in the bin. Cobwebs and dust everywhere.
-
"Generally OK except for three major faults."
1) The garden was a disgrace. Knee length grass and brambles growing across what passed for a path to the bottom of the garden. It looked as though nobody had been in to tidy up and mow the grass for at least a month. 2) The main carpet (pale beige), completely the wrong colour for a cottage with dogs, was filthy. I hoovered twice pulling up some of the dog hair and then on the last day I put on my outdoor shoes and scraped away at the carpet and pulled up handfulls of dog hair. I could not believe the amount. The carpet sweeper is quite inadequate - not powerful enough and the change over cleaners are not thorough enough! 3) Both toilets are not good flushers. You have to flush at least two times and sometimes three times. Did we enjoy our holiday? Yes we did because of the setting and the local attractions and countryside

"Lovely cottage in Osmington."
Location is perfect for walkers. You can go one way to the costal route or the other way up and over the white horse. The cottage is well equipped and very comfortable. Smugglers Inn Pub is closet pub and is a good half hour walk up and down. However great pit stop on a walk and very popular. Parking is on the narrow lane but is ok.

"Honeybun cottage is beautiful."
I have been to this cottage year after yearand it keeps getting better. This year the upstairs bathroom has been decorated and it is absolutely gorgeous. Plus the outside patio. It would be nice to exchange the lounge fire to a working one, there is quite a few perfect for a thatch cottage. The whole cottage was clean and fresh. Still think a different carpet colour in the lounge. The area of Osmington is outstanding and some gorgeous walks. Beautiful cottage in a beautiful area

"I love this cottage."
We book every year and would highly recommend. It is perfect if you have dogs and some lovely walks. I take my 90 year old mum and its ideal with a downstairs bedroom and bathroom. I do feel light coloured carpets are not perfect as when we arrived a stain in the lounge was present. Maybe something to look into. However, it did not deter the holiday. It has everything you require. See you next year.
-
"Beautiful cottage and location but downstairs bathroom far too small and also twin bedroom only really suitable for 1 single bed."
Carpets very dirty in lounge area, would be better having hard wood flooring and rugs as coming straight in off road.
-
"It was just what we were looking for."
Peace and quiet, lovely walks. The dogs had a great time. Good garden. Have already booked for next year. Would recommend to friends and family
-
"Lovely little cottage with a great garden for our dog ."
The bathroom facilities are quite cramped..especially the downstairs shower room..which isn't ideal.
-
"Holiday property was clean."
Shower room was cramped, ok for slim people. Garden and patio area needs a good revamp as untidy and a large mud area on patio that could be made into more patio space.

"What a lovely cottage, in a lovely village- especially impressed that Morris dancers were practising in the street!"
The listing photos are no longer accurate for the cottage, some in a positive way (the bedrooms now look much more modern with a change of bedding etc) but also the outdoor photo implies you’d be able to eat outside which isn’t possible as the new tables are coffee table height. The facilities at the cottage are overall better than described- more detail would be useful, the kitchen is well equipped with utensils, oven, hob, pots, pans, scales, salt, pepper etc also a fridge with a mini freezer compartment. The freezer is in the shed. There’s a large TV in the lounge and with the Wi-Fi we were able to use a Firestick as it has an HDMI socket. The cleanliness wasn’t the best unfortunately, we spent a lot of the week re washing the glasses and crockery as the previous occupant had either washed them badly by hand or used the dishwasher without a tablet… all were covered in a layer of scum. The previous occupant was clearly a dog owner as that is all we could smell in the lounge, all week… despite using the spray provided and without the ability to open any windows in there it was difficult to clear. The cushions and throws were all smelling lovely and clean though so I think it was embedded in the sofa/carpet. The very large entrance mat in the lounge was a hazard too- not safe on the carpet as it moves a lot and because it was so large it was constantly causing trips. The bins in the back garden were an eyesore out of the kitchen window- could be easily solved by creating them a smaller space and covering… also absolutely no means of recycling that we could find! Biggest issue for us though was that the small bedroom downstairs clearly has a damp issue, there was a dehumidifier literally wedged down between the small bed and the wall- my seven year old had to sleep in this tiny room all week! For the amount of money we spent we wouldn’t necessarily recommend but with some adjustments would visit again!

"Yes we loved honeybun."
.. Garden was okay .. just need to clean the area were the dustbins were.... Lots of loose soil .... Luckily it never rained at all ....because if it did your carpets would be ruin.....few marks on carpets ...but overall we enjoy our stay ...we would book again ... S fursey...

"As advertised, well managed by Sykes cottages, wonderful stay."
-
"Lovely cottage in a quite location tucked away, very comfortable and would welcome anyone staying on a holiday break."
Very clean inside , however the windows could have been cleaned and the courtyard could do with a tidy up. Some flag stones and some pot plants would be nice . But other than that a very nice relaxing cottage.

"Had a lovely time, Will book with you again Property as described"
-
"We were very dissapointed with the garden the grass was at least 6 inches deep all the hedges were overgrown and don't get me started on the patio it was in very poor condition it was full of weeds and soil it needed new slabs and landscaping there really wasn't a decent place to sit."
Also we weren't very impressed from the outside of the cottage the path hadn't been swept for weeks all the paintwork was dirty and the windows also wanted cleaning. It didn't have any kerb appeal at all.The pictures on the website show a different picture of the garden. It was a lot of money to pay wouldn't want to stay here again.
-
"Wow..."
What a little gem. Honeybun is such a beautiful cottage, quaint and cozy. Wonderful garden too sit in. All the rooms were fresh and clean. Added bonus it is dog friendly
-
"Booking very easy and communication was excellent On arrival, there was no toilet roll in the property or washing up materials."
Description was wrong as feature fire didn't work which was disappointing. The property in general was clean and tidy but needs a little touch up here and there, I wouldn't rent again at the price we paid
-
"We were under the impression that the cottage would be Covid cleaned as we couldn’t get in until 5pm, however on arrival we found the bath had a tide mark left from the last occupants, dust not only on the top panel on the bath but also down the skirting along the stairs and the hand rail on the landing plus the table on which the tv was standing."
There was also dust on the bed head. Along with that the carpet divider between the kitchen and lounge isn’t secured down so not only a trip hazard but painful if you were to catch your foot. We daren’t use the towel rail in the bathroom as it was very lose and the front door had a piece of wood and bit of sellotape to make sure the catch didn’t drop down meaning we’d be locked out. The furniture outside was very tired and rusty in places and the cushions had been left outside so were wet. As we paid £986 for a week I feel very disappointed and wonder whether you ever check the properties on your books. Mention should be made of the very cramped toilets too. We regularly book cottages for our holidays and this has been well below what we are used to.

"Honeybun is a lovely place to stay - the house is very well equipped and although small the layout is well thought out."
The location is excellent with so many nice places to see nearby. I have rated the description down slightly as it didn't mention that there is an oven (and it wasn't visible on the pictures) so I had planned meals that didn't include this!
Thankyou for your feedback and we are glad you had a lovely stay. The property has an electric oven and hob as advertised on the website. Property Owner

"The Cottage and its state of cleanliness was first class."
Charming place in immaculate condition, and we adored our three nights there. Strongly recommended. However what was irritating was:- 1. Inaccurate description of amenities. We were told to bring pretty well everything from oven gloves, tea towels, washing up liquid, condiments, cafetiere, games and whatever else. As it happens, all of the above, and more, were already provided. 2. The WiFi code was written down wrong. An "O should have been a "Q". I called Sykes at 18.00hrs for help and after 30 minutes of holding, gave up. Eventually located the Skye box and found the right password. A really annoying, unnecessary mistake. 3. Asked Sykes if we could leave no later than 09.45 on the day of departure (45 minutes after the due time), and was told that, under no circumstances was this possible, without paying an extra £200 for another night. Won't be using Sykes again, but would certainly go back to "Honeybun", and would recommend anyone else going there as well.
As owner of Honeybun , managed by Dream Cottages/Sykes, I do apologise for you having been told that you could not stay on for an extra 45 minutes. I understood that the expected leaving time was 10am anyway. Property Owner

"Really homely cottage in a pretty village and close to lots of nice countryside walks"
-
"The cottage was lovely, really clean, yet practical and relaxed in decor (so we weren't having to worry about the dog all the time!"
). The little seating area in the kitchen was great - I sat and did some work most days and the dog was happy wandering in and out of the back garden, which was secure (he's a little escape artist - if there had been a gap he'd have found it). Village was lovely and peaceful, neighbours were friendly and chatty in passing. Lots of nice walking from the doorstep, a couple of great pubs within an hours walk. We'll probably book Honeybun again - we had a week there and yet there is still much to explore.
-
"We had a wonderful week here, very comfortable and well appointed."
There are are nice walks from the village that take you onto the hills and beyond. The cottage is lovely and during the week we felt very much at home.

"Beautiful little cottage, and great location to explore Dorset"
-
"Perfect cottage good sized garden only negative is the broadband speed is very slow which they can be fixed very easily"
-
"Beautiful cottage we love it will come back next year"
-
"Lovely situated position , near the coast but quiet to rest after a full days activity’s."
Really enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend.
-
"The appliances in the cottage are very old and basic and for the price per night would have expected a higher level of finishes in the cottage."
There were no instructions left for anything and the last evening the electrics went and being a sunday could not contact anyone. We could not have showers in the morning as no hot water and could not make breakfast. The electric circuit board looked extremely old.
-
"We love Honeybun Cottage."
Very comfortable and cosy. Such a good location. Our second visit in two years!
-
"Cottage is advertised as for 4 people but is really only suitable for 2 adults."
It would be possible to fit 2 SMALL children into the downstairs bedroom but even then it would be tight. Downstairs shower was very efficient but the shower room itself was extremely tight- not possible to get out of the shower comfortably and certainly not to dry oneself. En suite bathroom is pretty good but has no shower- surely that is preferred these days to a bath. Kitchen needs refit as very tired and dishwasher absolutely stank!!
-
"Honeybun cottage is in a great location and has a character all of its own and we would stay here again."
There are some great Jurassic coastal walks easily accessible from the cottage with spectacular views and there's a pub called The Sly Fox literally just a 5 min walk away serving food (handy if you don't fancy cooking). During our stay 03-07 May 2019 there was two things that need attention by the owners, the ground floor sink in the shower room / toilet has a leaky hot tap and the garden isn't as dog friendly as stated in the details, our dogs could get out of the end of the garden into a space behind the garden where there's a brook/stream and the back of the neighbors gardens. Neither issue would put us off staying again but if the garden issue was rectified it would make the stay more enjoyable with dogs.

The property
This characterful petite thatched chocolate box cottage is located in the village of Osmington, parts of property date from the 16th Century. Stepping into the sitting room on arrival you will be met by a feature fire place (not useable) and ceiling beams displaying the charming characteristics of the cottage.
Leading out to the garden is the kitchen and diner, which is ideal for preparing meals to be enjoyed alfresco on the patio on a summer’s day.
On the ground floor is bedroom one and a shower room, on the upper floor is another bedroom with an en-suite.
Nestled in the attractive village of Osmington; a tranquil village populated with stone and thatched cottages, this elegant little property is an ideal location for country walks and horse riding.
Osmington has lots of history, with people living there for over 2000 years (not in one go!).
The village name comes from the Old English personal name, Ösmund, with ‘ington’, a farm.
Osmington Mills is the local coastal point and a short car journey offers visits to the beaches at Lulworth, Ringstead and Weymouth.
A brisk walk up the country lane will take you to the Smugglers Inn, perfect for a light refreshment or a good pub meal.
A walk in the opposite direction will take you to the open countryside where you will not etched into the chalk downs is the famous 'White Horse' with King George III riding back towards London.
Local folklore has it that he was not very happy that it shows him leaving Weymouth as this was his favoured seaside resort.
Sutton Poyntz is nearby and a wonderful place to visit.
The best and quickest way to walk to the village of Sutton Poyntz, is to walk to the back of Osmington Village and across 5 fields direct to the village of Sutton Poyntz.
You can go the long way around The White Horse and over the ridge.
Sutton Poyntz has a lovely duck pond and the Springhead Pub serves fantastic meals. Honeybun Cottage is the perfect location to base yourselves to explore the wonders of Dorset.
About the location
OSMINGTON
Osmington village, sits on the Jurassic coastline of Dorset, just 6 miles from Weymouth with it’s infamous beach and historic harbour and just 11 miles from Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. Home to the famous Chalk hillside carving of George III on horseback, cut into the hillside to commemorate the Royal visits to Weymouth, this landmark can be seen from miles away. It is also the place that John Constable spent his honeymoon in 1816 and where he completed his painting of Weymouth Bay that now hangs in the National Gallery. The South West Coastal path runs through Osmington Mills, a tiny hamlet on the edge of Osmington. Here many walkers start their coast path walks at the Smugglers inn, where reputedly there are historic connections to smuggling. Be sure to visit to find out all the stories. A short drive will see you reach a local convenience store at Preston. Weymouth offers a larger variety of shopping, eating and entertainment choices.
