  • "A really lovely cottage overlooking the owners beautiful garden."

The cottage is well equipped, clean, comfortable, and peaceful. I would definitely book again, and will highly recommend to my friends and family. Thank you John and Jan.

  • "WOW! What a fabulous find and base for our little break away exploring Dorset."

John & Jan are fantastic hosts and have created such a lovely little barn conversion, finished to a high spec and in immaculate condition. Off road parking and a lovely little table and chairs to use in the side garden - perfect for listening to the birds after a long day exploring Everything you need within the cottage for a perfect stay, high end Neff Appliances in the kitchen, so fully able to make a home cooked meal if you wanted. The shower in the wet room was excellent quality powerful (which you don't always get everywhere!) Very good value for money compared to a lot of others properties on the Sykes Website. Lovely Little Pub (The Cricketers) with nice food within a 5 minute walk from the cottage and a shop not far away. Dairy to get milk from 7am-7pm close by We slept very well at The Malthouse and will be booking a return stay for 2024 - its a 10/10 from us

  • "Well equipped and beautiful surroundings."

Nicely decorated house and high standards. The cottage is well located in relation to sights and the coast. Calm location. The village is very pictoresque and welcoming, just a short walk to the local pub, the cricketers.

  • "The pics look good but bad configuration makes for this property having very little privacy."

As loyal Sykes customers we are very disappointed!!!Just look at The Barn, Frog lane, Anisty to look for improvement of space & a relaxing stay for a similar price.

    Any time again.

  • "Helpful and friendly hosts and we appreciated touches like the welcome basket."

The house in general was very well appointed and we were very comfortable. The living area and bathroom and bedrooms were all immaculately clean. The only issue we had was that previous visitors had left various pans and crockery a little unclean or, for instance, with coffee staining in the cups. We had to wash some things quite thoroughly before we could use them Overall though, this is definitely somewhere we would come again if holidaying in this area.

  • "A nice cosy place."

The only criticism would be that a full set of smaller saucepans would have been preferred as we struggled with the mixture of pans that were there.

Lovely friendly village, enjoyed the local walks suggested in the quest book. We visited lots of places and the malthouse was a good location. Hope to return again.

Hand wash and fairy liquid seemed watered down no toilet paper on arrival (this might be because we were a last minute booking) strange smell in wet room possible due to cupboard base getting wet from the shower . In the lounge some of the hooks were not attached to the curtains little things that spoil the property on the plus side hosts friendly with a nice dog.Well sited for visiting the area (Hall and Woodhouse well worth a visit)

Everything about it is lovely to look at, comfortable and immaculately clean, with lots of thoughtful additions such as a tailor-made map of the local walks. Our hosts were most welcoming too. We would highly recommend the Malthouse!

  • "A delightful holiday cottage in a beautiful, friendly village which is almost traffic free!"

The owners of the cottage, who live in the house next door, are very thoughtful and considerate. They welcomed us on arrival and provided a generous hamper - unexpected and much appreciated. They also have a very sweet well behaved old golden retriever, who passed by on occasion to say hello. The cottage was perfectly clean. If you are a walker, there are some fabulous walks in the area - which can take in some lovely villages and pubs/restaurants. There is a farm vending shop about a mile away (when we were there the female cows and their young were in a barn alongside the shop, which was lovely). The farm sells beautiful milk and lots of other basics (including ice-cream!). One of the things that really struck me about the area was how friendly and genuinely thoughtful people are. It is a beautiful cottage to stay in for so many reasons.

  • "Small but perfectly formed!"

Superb kitchen and facilities. Really well executed. Fab spiral staircase to mezzanine bedroom - great for children. Well situated for Stonehenge, Shaftesbury and Swanage. Walking distance from pub. Lovely welcome basket. Only improvements could be the outside space available - furniture set-up ready to enjoy and lighter weight duvets.

  • "Cottage and owners were great."

You said you would investigate that I booked originally on VRBO, your e-mail confirmation had an issue so I could not log onto your site, you then canceled my booking, I then booked on your site direct for 20% more but you would not honor my original booking. I e-mailed and spoke to customer service. They had me send evidence of my original booking but then nothing. This was a three week booking so you would think you would value us as a customer but obviously not. To anyone booking via VRBO beware.

The property

The Malthouse is a barn conversion completed in 2020 to a high specification.

In times past it was where they prepared the malt for the village brewery.

It is annexed to Fourways, which is a historic thatched house in the centre of the village of Shroton. The Malthouse is ideally suited to a couple wanting a peaceful base for exploring the Dorset countryside or for a family with up to two children over 6 wanting a base for a family holiday. Downstairs it consists of a main bedroom with queen sized bed, a living/dining area with a modern well equipped kitchen, and a shower room with toilet.

A circular staircase leads to an attic bedroom with two full sized single beds.

The Malthouse is totally self contained.

It has under floor electric heating powered by green electricity, with a supplementary electric ‘wood burning’ stove for the colder months. Outside there is off street parking for one car and a separate garden area which basks in the evening sun.

It has a gazebo and garden chairs for your sole use. The Malthouse is in the peaceful village of Shroton (Iwerne Courtney).

The village lies well off the A350 about halfway between the Dorset towns of Shaftesbury and Blandford Forum.

Shroton is a typical North Dorset village of about 400 people, with the renowned Cricketers Pub, local historic church, and a dairy farm selling fresh milk and other locally sourced produce.

Freshly baked bread can be bought from a very well stocked village shop about a mile to the North in Iwerne Minster. The village also has an enthusiastic cricket club with a classic village cricket pitch, nestling under Hambledon Hill which is on the Wessex Ridgeway, a well known walkers’ paradise.

Hambledon Hill has extensive ancient earthworks which have seen human activity for over 5000 years.

Hod Hill, which was a more recent Roman garrison, also provides excellent walking and magnificent views to the Cranborne Chase to the east and the Dorset coast to the south. Within 45 minutes’ drive is the Dorset Jurassic coast with the world famous Studland beach and magnificent coastal walks.

The historic city of Salisbury lies to the north east, and the towns of Poole and Dorchester are also nearby.

Dogs can be booked only by special arrangement, please contact our office us on 01244356666 if you want to request this.

About the location

BLANDFORD FORUM

Thornicombe 2.7 miles; Child Okeford 6.5 miles; Moors Valley Country Park & Forest 17.9 miles.

Blandford Forum is a market town in Dorset, England, situated by the River Stour. Notable for its Georgian architecture, most of the town was rebuilt in the 18th century after it was destroyed by a fire in 1731. King George II made a donation to rebuild the town centre with designs from local architects John and William Bastard. The Blandford Georgian Fayre is an annual event held in the first week of May and celebrates its Georgian heritage, with presentations, historical re-enactments and music and dancing. One of the town’s biggest events takes place on the late Bank Holiday weekend, the Great Dorset Steam Fair. A largely colourful festival with over 2,000 exhibits and an old time steam funfair. Offering a wide selection of independent store, supermarkets, pubs, restaurants, cafés and a Georgian tearoom. So much to visit within this quaint town and makes for a wonderful tourist attraction, whatever the season.
