  • "This is a lovely cottage in a quiet location with lovely grounds."

Wake up to the sound of a woodpecker, robin and goldfinches to name a few. The large enclosed garden is mainly set to lawn and ideal for our cockapoo puppy who when we got home missed the freedom of not being on a lead. The owners Fee & Simon were very friendly and helpful and even offered us the use of the electric car charger. They have dogs of their own and left us a towel, poo bags and dog bowl to use. The village itself has a selection of pubs and a post office village stores. We used our drone in the garden and have sent the owners some lovely photos of their cottage and house. We would recommend this for a couple who like peace and quiet. A car is essential as it is a bit remote but we enjoyed this. We travelled to RSPB Arne, Weymouth, Nat Trust Kingston Lacey, Pallington Lakes (worth a visit) Blandfold Forum, Ferndown, Lulworth & Wareham so there are plenty of places to visit within 50 mile radius. Our thanks to Fee & Simon who helped make our stay perfect.

Thank you for that lovely feedback. We’re so pleased that you and Bella enjoyed yourselves. Many thanks for the photographs. Hopefully we will see you again. Kind regards, Fee and Simon Property Owner

Comfortable and light, with wonderful views, and little or no traffic noise. Simon and Fee are the perfect hosts - helpful and friendly, but not intrusive. Towns like Blandford Forum and Sherborne are close by, and the sea isn't that far away either! I came for a short break to destress and "take a breath", and this is the perfect place. I will certainly be back! Highly recommended

Set on a slight rise close to Okeford Fitzpaine, Oak Apple Cottage is surrounded by glorious countryside, ideal for walking and exploring. The cottage is spacious and comfortable with open plan living, dining and dining. We were made to feel very welcome by Fee and Simon and their 3 canine companions who occasionally came to check that Rufus, our dog, was behaving himself. We really enjoyed our week there. After a day out and about it was very relaxing to come back to. It was very well equipped and comfortable. The view from the patio down to the pond was idyllic. The only thing I think I need to mention is the small fridge but that is only because I got carried away in the M&S food hall and had difficulty getting all our goodies in. We also realised that food supplies were close at hand and hadn't needed to stock up. We would definitely stay at the cottage again.

  • "The cottage and location were both lovely."

The only things we felt could be improved is a handrail in the shower room as being registered disable the thought of slipping prevented me from having a shower without the worry of slipping over. Also we found on arrival that the drinking cups were dirty which we highlighted to the hosts. Although the male host was friendly and welcoming the lady host never enquired on my wife’s welfare and made no attempt to ask on her welfare during our stay. This we found most unusual.

We are sorry that your stay at okeapple cottage did not live up to your expectations. I apologise for the oversight on the coffee stained mugs, which, of course I immediately replaced. I was away for 4 days during your stay but when I returned I checked with my husband that all was well and he reassured me that he thought it was. Although we do stress that the cottage is all on one level, we do not advertise that it has all the necessary aids for disabled guests. We are always very happy to address any issues that might arise during our guests stay with us. We hope your journey back to Eastbourne went smoothly. • "From the outside the cottage looks the same as the website images; that’s as far as it goes."

The whole property smells damp. The furniture or bed are not as pictured, it is extremely tired, musty and uncomfortable. The owners live next door and frequently walk between their house and their garage passing by the cottage, this is exasperated by the fact there are no voiles or nets at the Windows, even in the bedroom and bathroom, so you have very little privacy. The owners dogs roam at will and you are greeted by a sign saying they will “visit” you in the cottage. We came home after just one night as it was so bad and have asked for a refund. Sykes have yet to address this

It is very disappointing, after so many excellent reviews, to learn that you had not enjoyed your stay. We are very sorry that the cottage failed to meet your expectations. We take all feedback very seriously and we have carefully addressed each of the comments. We have taken updated photographs and will submit them for publication as soon as possible. The single mattress has been replaced, there is a new microwave and also a new rug. Furthermore, we are in the process of running up a set of net curtains to complement the existing ones, in order to protect our guests modesty. However the cottage sits within the grounds of our home and we occasionally need to visit the freezer in the garage and do some gardening to keep the outside looking tidy. This activity is kept to a minimum. We are always on hand to deal with any issues that might arise and it is a shame that none of these points was brought to our attention. Nevertheless, we are not complacent; negative feedback is even more important to us than positive feedback and we do our best to keep our guests happy. Property Owner

We did however have one negative with reference to taking our dog which was partly our fault for not reading the full terms and conditions, reading clause 7a after receiving the full information when we had paid in full we realised that we were not allowed to leave our dog in the property alone at any time, after realising this we decided against taking our dog as it would have been to restrictive as we like to eat out and this would have prevented this, I feel that this particular restriction should be highlighted on the page that states pets welcome for example with a note “see clause 7a” This would put me off using Sykes Cottages again unfortunately.

Only slight disappointment was that Wi-Fi was ineffective. However in some ways this added to the tranquillity and remoteness of the holiday.

About the location

OKEFORD FITZPAINE

Sturminster Newton 4 miles.

Surrounded by a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the village of Okeford Fitzpaine boasts a local shop and pub, with further shopping facilities at nearby Sturminster Newton. The small market town of Sturminster Newton is set on the banks of the River Stour, reached via a graceful, six arch 15th century bridge, carrying a warning of deportation for those who damage it! The whole area acted as inspiration for the works of Thomas Hardy, who wrote Return of The Native whilst living in the town. The region is dotted with thatched cottages, rural walks, stunning country views, and fascinating towns, such as Sherborne, with its abbey and castle, whilst the beautiful Dorset Heritage coastline is also within easy reach, making this an ideal base all year round!
