  • "The owners were helpful and friendly, without being intrusive."

The property was quite spacious, got plenty of light and sun, was well equipped and clean. The beds and settees were all very comfortable, something we always note. The property was in a quiet location, with places to walk the dog, both in the village and a short drive away. Places of interest to visit were nearby, such as The Tank Museum and Fleet Air Arm Museum. Just 2 suggestions - this was the only place we have stayed in where there were no coat hooks, boot shelves etc in the hall. Also the only place with no folder of information and items of interest. The bath/shower in the bedroom where both sides of the bed were accessible, was very difficult to use, as the shower attachment needs to be at the other end of the bath. As a general comment to all owners renting out accommodation, I think they should spend a full week staying completely in the property to see what is needed or missing. This property was better than many.

  • "Beautiful location and extremely well appointed cottage."

Very comfortable indeed, and slept so well. Kitchen particularly well kitted out. Just one teeny thing: it would be helpful to have the sign to the property prominently displayed from the road, if possible, as it was quite hard to find (especially in the dark)

  • "We've stayed here before and commented on how this comfy cottage is an excellent base to explore the Jurassic Coast, Corfe Castle, Monkey World, Bovington Tank Museum etc."

What is also great is its position in Tolpuddle, the birth place of the Trade Union movement. It's a 5 mins walk to the village green and the Sycamore tree, one of the 50 Great British Trees, to discuss their poor wages and living conditions. Nearby is the Church of St John with a grave of one the Tolpuddle Martyrs, and another 5 mins walk to the TUC museum.

  • "Although the 2 small bedrooms were shown by photograph in the brochure that did not prepare us for just how tiny they were."

Is it not pushing it a bit to describe them as double bedrooms except perhaps for 2 children in each. Apart from the bed being just about impossible to get in and out on the low-ceiling side, there is inadequate wardrobe space or elbow-room in general for more than one person per room The bathroom likewise is very tight, the minimal-sized shower cubicle might prove impossible for anyone even a bit overweight or of restricted mobility. Luckily there were not 6 of us and it was not too unsociable for one couple to have separate rooms. You should be prepared for more adverse comments through this year ? Otherwise the place was well decorated, well equipped, clean and comfortable, and in a lovely position i.e.excellent

  • "The Hayloft is a beautiful cottage, extremely well appointed with some little extras that are very thoughtful."

It was spotless and very cosy, the beds were most comfortable and we had a lovely weekend. The owners live next door and were very welcoming but not intrusive. The cottage is situated in a very attractive area and although our stay was short it gave us the chance to spend time together as a family. We would be very happy to return again sometime in the future!

An extremely comfortable holiday let which had all the comforts of home and tastefully decorated. Set in lovely surroundings and convenient by car to most of the well known tourist attractions in Dorset. Will definitely go back.

  • "The Hayloft was a wonderful venue."

We were in Dorset for a family wedding and the venue was perfect for us - 6 people all getting ready at the same time - the three en suite bathrooms were ideal. The venue is clean, comfortable and well resourced. The minute we walked in we felt at home and that feeling never left us. After the wedding day we had time to explore the local area and enjoy some last minute sun. The owners were very helpful and ensured we had everything we needed. Highly recommended! We would certainly go again! Thanks

  • "My wife and I had an extended winter break at the Hayloft."

Simply put it was a home-from-home. Clean, cosy and convenient. The Cottage has everything you would expect and exceeds anything which could be described as "A Holiday Cottage". The views from the Cottage are superb and the owners who live next door are most pleasant. Tolpuddle is an ideal location from which to explore Dorset. We would certainly recommend the Hayloft.

  • "It would be difficult to exceed expectations as this is the second time we have stayed at this cottage and we will definitely do so again."

The owner is lovely and extremely helpful - if there's anything not quite right, she'll fix it in a flash, as long as you let her know! The location is wonderful - fabulous views, very quiet and extremely dark at night. If you are considering walking to the pub, a torch is very necessary!! There are security lights around the house so it's fine once you have negotiated the lane. The directions to find the entrance from the road could be a little clearer - e.g. "set back from the road so you can't see the number 81 until you are on top of it!"; "just past the thatched cottage" or "by the electricity installation" - but once you've found it it's fine. The only "criticism" of the accommodation is that the ceilng slopes steeply in two of the bedrooms so that making the bed and reaching the bedside table is a bit tricky. And if you're the person sleeping that side, you need to be a bit flexible! The beds are comfortable and the showers are nice and powerful - and the heads aren't fixed so you don't need a shower cap. The owners dogs are lovely and not a problem to guests in any way. Four of us, with an Assistance Dog, stayed there this time and the verdict was unanimous - we had a great time and love the cottage!

About the location

Dorchester 8 miles.

The delightful village of Tolpuddle lies deep in the heart of Hardy country, just 8 miles from the bustling market town of Dorchester. Full of character, this village offers a tasteful combination of modern and thatched properties, surrounded by glorious countryside. The lush meadows, watered by the quaintly named 'River Piddle', and the nearby chalk downland provide lovely rural walks. This tranquil village is probably best known for its six famous Martyrs who held the first Trade Union meeting in 1831, and the local museum tells their story. There are plenty of other local attractions including Lawrence of Arabia's cottage, Athelhampton House, The Tank Museum and Monkey World, all of which are well worth a visit.
