  • "Lovely large property."

A little dated but comfortable beds, well equiped and charming. 5 minute walk to the beach and all West Bay amenities, though the return walk is up a steep hill which may not suit some. Enclosed rear garden was ideal for our dog. Using the garage we easily parked 2 cars off the road. We would happily stay there again. Only tiny negative is that a couple of spare toilet rolls would have been appreciated.

  • "We had a fantastic family break."

Everything you could possibly need was provided. From the listing I thought we would have to park our second car in the harbour. But, using the garage and drive we comfortably fit both cars at the property. I would suggest a larger interior kitchen bin, especially if the property has the full compliment of 6 guests, but that’s it. We thought everything was great! We would definitely go back again.

It was well equipped even hot water bottles were provided. All the beds were really comfortable for us as we like quite a firm mattress. The only thing we didn’t like was the corner sofa it was very low for us, but this is only a matter of taste. We easily parked a Suzuki Vitara in the garage and a Ford Kuga on the drive. When we got there the upstairs plug was blocked but within half an hour of phoning Sykes, a man arrived to fix it, it must have been blocked for the previous renters so i can’t believe why people don’t report things, no one can fix anything if they don’t know it’s broke!

No problem with 2 cars. Discovery Sport fitted into the garage so not THAT small! Agree that a couple of garden chairs would be nice altho’ the picnic table was useful. Twin beds very firm & would benefit from mattress toppers but apart from the above, a great place to stay. Fantastic location so close to the promenade & the cliffs as well as the harbour and restaurants. Well equipped house, spotlessly clean on arrival, everything well labelled for our info. It was a very comfortable and relaxing environment and we would happily recommend it to others and come back ourselves!

We have now put mattress toppers on the 2 twin beds. There are also now 2 more aluminium armchairs for the garden Property Owner

Pity the new house built next door has completely blocked the view to the coast. Otherwise comfortable as always. The downstairs shower room smelt damp even after leaving the windows open and the sink is very slow to drain away. There may be a problem with the drainage.

Thank you for alerting us to the downstairs shower issue. When we can get down we will investigate. I agree with you about the new house next door. We do still have the view from the first floor bedroom, but in law you can not protect a view so we have lost the view of the sea from the sitting room. We have now purged the shower and sink drains. They now run freely and don’t smell. We will keep an eye on this. Property Owner

Very comfortable and clean, extremely well equipped. Comfortable bed. Lovely shower downstairs. Very close to coastal path. Close to local amenities and harbour. Would have liked some garden chairs to relax in. Only seating for garden was the bench set. Lovely enclosed and tidy garden. We did have problems watching the television, mostly unable to view BBC 1. But lots of other channels available. Already talking about booking again next year.

Very dog friendly area. The property was more than adequate. Lovely sized garden for dogs and children. Clean without being over the top, so we felt comfortable bringing the dogs and family here. Facilities were good. Could cook family meals ok. My son enjoyed the fact that he could still watch his cartoons on tv. Views from bedrooms were amazing and 2 minutes walk to the beach with lovely cliff top walks. Lots of local information leaflets at the property so we could find things to do in the local area. Can't wait to come back.

Everything you need equipment wise was good. We were pleased to find the card game book for children and learnt some new games. Puzzles also came in handy. We like the area looking for fossils. The Hive was pricey for a crab sandwich and it only had brown meat so wouldn’t recommend it but we enjoyed our meal in the station carriage. The weather let us down but did manage beach couple of days. We would recommend Thorncroft for a family very clean too.

Fantastic walks from the cottage to Burton Bradstock or Eype along the cliff path. The Haddon Hotel was a great find for lunch and dinner-highly recommend. The negatives were…the lack of outside furniture chairs /tables/umbrella. Inside the house the single beds were uncomfortable -springs felt on mattresses so we slept on spare duvet. Would be nice to know the history of the house/photos whet your appetite

The house was built in the 1930s for 2 sisters who lived there until our grandparents moved in in 1960/61. The black and white winter photos are 1962/63 and the colour ones the early seventies, we think. We have now put mattress toppers on the 2 twin beds. • "We had no internet when we arrived and reported it to the maintenance company."

They were very efficient and bent over backwards to sort the problem for us. It was up and running after two days and the owner compensated us for the loss. Our only grumble was the parking space. The nature of the house meant that there was no alternative. We have a Nissen Qashqai which just fitted in the space. My husband had stroke a few months ago and has difficulty getting in and out of the car. The tight space meant that you couldn't open the doors fully and he struggled. Not sure how people manage with a bigger car or with two cars as we couldn't use the garage as the key didn't fit. I gave a lower mark for comfort only because the beds, especially the single one, was VERY hard although I appreciate that this is personal preference. All in all we had a lovely stay and the beautiful weather was an added bonus. Thank you.

Thank you for your feedback. We have freed off and oiled the lock and hinges of the garage doors. The key now works. We have put padded mattress toppers on the single beds. I agree that the garage and drive are narrow for modern cars, and we do make it clear that the garage is narrow and give the width. In the description. The house was built in the 1930s and it is not possible to widen the space in front of the garage. Property Owner

  • "Have stayed in many holiday homes over the years and this was one of the very best, comfortable, well equipped and in a lovely quiet location."

It's less than five minutes walk from the front door of the cottage to the cliff path, which was an added bonus, also a short walk into the centre of West Bay with a bit of an uphill slog walking back. Could do with some clear instructions on how to work the hob as the diagram wasn't helpful so we had to rely on the microwave and top oven instead. Also, it needs to say in the Sykes listing that there's a DVD player at the property. If we'd known, we wouldn't have taken our own DVD with us. These were only minor niggles as we actually had a fantastic time staying at this excellent cottage located in a very scenic part of the country.

Sea views from upstairs but unfortunately looks out on a blank white wall from the lounge. The lounge is dark from this wall and overgrown tree/bushes at the side. Plenty of space inside for 3 adults but the furniture needs updating. Corner sofa is very uncomfortable, there is plenty of space to replace with two three seater sofas which would be more comfortable and make the space more welcoming. The TV needs replacing…..it is the smallest screen I have seen for a long time, in a large room. The double bed downstairs is old and uncomfortable, springs squeak, and one side of the mattress falls away. The kitchen is well equipped with plenty of space for your own food. Worktops are limited so it isn’t easy to cook/dish up food but we managed. Plenty of crockery and glasses. Upstairs there is no wardrobe in the twin bedroom, just 4 hooks and 3 coathangers. In fact there is a real shortage of coathangers in all three bedrooms. The bed in the main bedroom is very comfortable. Overall the furniture is mostly old and dated and gives off a 1950’s vibe. It could do with some updating.

We have replaced the TV with a bigger one, and the downstairs double bed. We will increase the number of hangers at the first opportunity. We were going for a vintage vibe, but understand it may not be to everyone's taste. Property Owner

Also our small elderly dog struggled with the steps back and front. Also concerns regarding drop at the back of the garden. I'm sure this wouldn't have been an issue for most dogs. Maybe this could be made clearer in advance. This is purely feedback. We had a lovely holiday in a beautiful area.

The enclosed garden was brilliant for our border terrier to run around in. We would like to thank the owners for the emergency repair to the fence that they had to do following the February storms. We had read previous reviews and can honestly say that EVERYTHING mentioned in those reviews had been remedied by the owners. The only thing I would say(and its not a complaint at all) is that we like to leave our holiday lets as we find them. On using the vacuum cleaner we had to stop and open the windows as the (doggy) smell was very bad. I couldn't find any replacement bags. Lovely place and we would love to come back and bring the family

Thank you for your kind review, I can confirm the temporary fence has now been mended and we have replaced the vacuum cleaner and replacement bags are kept in the cupboard under the stairs. We hope to welcome you back to Thorncroft in the future. Property Owner

Cooker hob wasn’t easy to use but kitchen equipment and utensils, etc were good. Anybody with walking difficulties should be warned that approach to the house is a very steep.

The arrival time has been changed to 1600. All the houses on West Cliff are on a slope. Unavoidably, the steps down to the house from in front of the garage are steep. There are much shallower steps from the verge in front of the house. Similarly, there are 2 sets of steps to access the back garden. The steps from the kitchen back door are steep. The steps round the side of the house are shallower. Property Owner

  • "First impressions of the property when we arrived were not good."

The driveway and path up to the front door were overgrown with weeds/plants that hadn't been cut back for weeks, so it made it difficult getting out of the car and unpacking. The back lawn hadn't been cut for a long time as it must have been around 6 inches high which isn't ideal when you have to find dogs mess to pick up. Emailed Sykes and the 'property management' were contacted so the lawn was cut on our penultimate day of the one week stay. I had to pull up weeds that had been left there in the gravel path outside the back door down to the lawn and these were 3-4ft high. Inside the property, all cleaned to a good standard apart from harvest spiders in the corners of all rooms - not acceptable especially if you had a fear of spiders. Surprised this hadn't been sorted giving the extra cleaning time between check out at 10am and next guests at 5pm. There were no toilet rolls left anywhere, just half used rolls in both toilets - never had to buy toilet rolls where we have stayed before. Luckily brought our own hand wash but still had to buy some soap for the two other sinks, also brought kitchen rolls as again nothing. We weren't told about building work next door and had to retreat indoors, closing the lounge windows on a hot afternoon when we wanted to sit outside with a cup of tea. The concrete cutting was so loud with dust blowing over the fence, and a generator starting up - not what you need when you are on holiday. We put the rubbish bag out on the correct day as instructed on the fridge door note, and it wasn't taken. The previous fortnightly collection had also not taken place as another guest had also left a note after leaving rubbish out. So there were terrible smelling bags of rubbish left in the dustbin for weeks, very unhygienic. Just not good value for money when we stayed the second week in Sept and paid £1082 for a couple and 2 dogs. The owners really need to request the routine tasks are carried out with attention to detail to make this accommodation a nicer place to stay. We have stayed at so many lovely properties and felt very disappointed that our expectations were let down with Thorncroft.

Great location. It has a real home from home feel. Even though there were only 2 of us and a dog, it could easily cater spaciously for 6 people. Lots of space. Very well equipped - probably more than one would expect of a rental home. Location is perfect being 200m from the beach, the pubs, the shop, the town centre and about 30 metres from the coastal path. As per the whole area, you will be walking up and down hills so make sure you are ok with that. The house is super clean. It is clear on the listing, but there is only room for one car on the drive (our Range Rover fitted), and room for one small car in the garage so if you come in more than one car, you may have to park a car somewhere else for the duration (there is no parking on the road close by). I would have thought this was a major cleaning area in the current climate with covid and the extra cleaning being done. The skirting board also showed dirt on the antiseptic cloth after wiping. We had to report the boiler during our stay as it was making a strange noise. The engineer said this was a frequent problem in this house due to the radiators being tuned down using the thermostat on each radiator. The house instruction booklet should state the house temperature should only be controlled though the thermostat in the hall to prevent this problem. Everything else was satisfactory and we enjoyed our stay.

Thank you for your feedback. This has been our first season and your feedback helps us improve the house. We checked the banister after cleaning. When the banister is wiped with something damp, like a wipe or a damp cloth, there is a brown mark on the cloth: this is from the banister stain. I'm sorry you had a problem with the heating and glad that it was resolved for you. The thermostat in the hall sets the temperature at which the boiler kicks in: all the radiators, except the one in the hall by design, have a valve to set the temperature in each room. Therefore it is advisable to check/use both the hall thermostat and the radiator valves when setting heat levels. There are instructions with photographs in the information folder.
