  • "This is an older property with so much character and history to it."

It's proximity to Glastonbury, it's wonderful views, it's warm kitchen, massive dining room, big bedrooms and comfy lounge area were great for a group of 13. Not to mention the piano room with two pianos. We loved every second of our stay there.

  • "Wootton House was reminiscent of a bygone era and a bit tired, yet it remains proud and comfortably wraps you up in its large size and tangible family history."

The house facilities were perfectly adequate for a large group and the expansive gardens greatly appreciated. The object of a Grade II listing is to curb unwarranted change; that is true of it's character too. Sure, have an information pack somewhere, sort out the roof leak in the toyroom, the broken shower control handles and clear the tennis court of beech nuts, and maybe even a judicious lick of paint, but whatever you do, don't destroy this quintessential English country house by modernising it.

Thank you for all of those comments. I'll put out a search for the Visitors Book - it should be there! And the shower handles and leaks have already been dealt with. The Painting remains a Forth Bridge task, particularly as it has to be slipped in between visitors, but please be assured that we are on it, and it will be done absolutely in keeping with the historic feel of the house. • "Excellent outside space for children and adults."

Plenty of inside space and well equipped kitchen & utility. Bathrooms excellent with plenty of hot water. Reception room sofas and chairs adequate but very tired. Decor and carpets also tired but clean. A large amount of family history in the shape of pictures and mementos in every room on all horizontal surfaces and walls which leant to an overall interesting appearance but susceptible to accidental damage. A bit like staying in an old museum. Overall all party members (adults and children) enjoyed the holiday.

Plenty of equipment in the kitchen. Loads of games in the games room. Only thing which let it down was the very high, not very long double bed on wheels to the left as you go up the stairs. My son in law found the double bed with the en-suite short as well, but he is 6 foot 2 inches tall!

We loved the aga, the kitchen where we spent most of our time as a family. The grounds are beautiful, unfortunately the weather was too cold and frosty to use the well maintained tennis court. We did manage a small football tournament which was enjoyed by everyone. The bathrooms were very nicely presented and plenty of hot water for everyone. The games room was a huge success with the small people and the big people. Thank you.

! Just fantastic and a bonus was the unlimited supply of firewood provided… we had both fires blazing, and the central heating could be turned down!! Yes some of it is a little shabby but that adds to the charm and stops you feeling afraid to be there. Very warm and the aga is wonderful. The garden is a great place to wander, play and I’m sure in the summer would allow great barbecues and relaxing in the sun. The children loved the playroom and our pianist was blown away by the Steinway. Very comfortable.

The house was very comfortable, with warm rooms, comfy beds and beautiful grounds. It is a beautiful old house with some need of attention and repair. The games room was a great addition with lots of children's toys and games and was well used by us. We loved the grounds which were beautifully maintained and had a lot of fun with the children's play area and on the tennis court. The outdoor seating area was great. The house was really well equipped, lots of chairs in all rooms the kitchen had everything you could need. It would be a good idea to clean out all the drawers of the various chests/cupboards as it gave the house a very mucky feel. We had a great week and would definitely return .

  • "We loved the character of Wootten House and enjoyed our stay there."

The house is huge and generally well appointed with a well equipped kitchen. The grounds are lovely and we would have made more use of them had it been drier. We appreciated the way the upstairs bathrooms have been updated and these were clean and well appointed. However the downstairs bath was not usable as it did not drain properly. We made good use of the dining room which was a nice place to eat. The larger sitting room was very comfortable. The musicians in the party made use of the pianos but would recommend that they are tuned. We enjoyed the collection of interesting books, pictures etc. The location of the property is beautiful. The property is slightly lacking in terms of cleanliness-for example there were dog hairs on some of the downstairs carpets and it was a little dusty and cobwebby in places. We would recommend more cleaning materials are provided-broom, dustpan and brush, dusters, mop and bucket, cordless vacuum cleaner, cleaning products etc. We would have been happy to do more cleaning before departure if we had had the means. Some of our party found some of the beds uncomfortable as has been commented before.Overall there were lots of good things about this lovely house and we think the few downsides could be easily addressed to make for a more comfortable stay for visitors.

Cleanliness of bathrooms, kitchens, main rooms etc. fine though bit dusty with cobwebs in some areas of the house. Children enjoyed the playroom but it does need a clean and sort out. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday in this great, character property. Would definitely recommend it.

Some of the beds were not comfortable but overall there were far more good things about the house than bad ones. There was not much in the way of cleaning equipment that we could find- no brush and pan, no long extension for the Henry, but nothing that spoiled the holiday and we’d love to come back when the swimming pond is ready!

Our guests loved their stay as did we. It was truly a spectacular week, spent playing games and chatting by roaring log fires in a magnificent setting. A little run down, but all the better for its shabby chic. Making for a comfortable and relaxed country stay in a great part of Somerset. We loved learning about the houses history and family. Having rented houses all over the world this is definately up there with our favourites. Thank you.

The facilities and location are great, exceeding expectation. The comfort and particularly the cleanliness left a lot to be desired. There is a difference between being old and quaint and being worn out and dirty for things like mattresses and carpets. I would recommend more zip-link beds for when there are more couples and less children as it gives greater flexibility.

Thank you for your feedback, we are glad to hear you enjoyed the facilities and location. The owner's are in the process of updating the mattresses and the carpets have recently been restored. Property Owner

Priority has been bathrooms which are all lovely but do need to be well cleaned to prevent them deteriorating. Lots of space for large groups, games room, tennis court, climbing frame all great and the gardens are lovely. Kitchen is very well equipped and was fun to use. Mattresses a bit past their sell by date so not particularly comfortable. However we had a great time here and felt lucky to have found the property and thanks to the owners were able to roll over last years booking due to pandemic. Quiet with lots of space and excellent location. However house needs a DEEP clean-I can cope with many imperfections but marked dust under beds and furniture, mouse dirt in cupboards, filthy windows, shower dysfunction and larger rodents running outside are not what I expect for the weekly charge. It seems incongruous considering the money that has been spent on the wild swimming pool (not accessible to us). Nevertheless would I go back?- Yes John White

The garden was amazing with it's own Tennis court and croquet lawn. The house itself was like stepping into a Jane Austin novel, packed with caracter and period features. The only downside to the property was the cleanliness. The rooms were not cleaned properly and the kitchen looked like it had not been cleaned at all. We were not disappointed and realty felt we had taken a step back in time ! Some visitors might be put off by the 'frayed edges' but we all agreed they added to the charm and authenticity of the property. What a privilege to stay somewhere with original William Morris wallpaper !! Initially worried about how the youngest children would cope with such a different property, we had unfounded fears. The owners introduction manual made it obvious that this is first and foremost a family home where children are welcome - and judging by the number of toys and games, children are certainly expected :) We particularly liked the kitchen (cooking on an Aga for the first time was a wonderful experience) and the cosy lounge where we had a fire each night whilst taking part in quizzes and parlour games. All family members have been googling to find more info about the Hood family and the history of the house - both the housekeeper and cleaner very kindly shared information freely and it was interesting to hear why certain portraits were hung outside of the main house !!! At every turn there was evidence of those who had lived here in the past - and we really felt we were living 'an experience' rather than taking a holiday. Being able to bring all generations together (including the dogs) was wonderful as we were celebrating a special 50th birthday. Thanks so much for a wonderful time - we'

The property

Wootton House is a superb country house on the edge of the unspoiled hamlet of Butleigh Wootton on the Somerset levels.

Constructed in the 18th cent., this striking house sits on a 1,000 acre estate comprising gardens, woods, parkland and working farms.

The house is comfortable, elegant, and well loved.

You enter through a large front hall with wood floors and oak panelling which leads to the equally impressive back hall with twin pianos; a handsome Steinway grand and an upright.

The house has two reception rooms; a sitting room with a marble fireplace and fine paintings and a lovely drawing room with damask wallpaper, an open fire and French windows to the front garden.

Overlooking the rear garden is a large formal dining room where the long oak dining table sits before an enormous Jacobean-style ornamental fireplace - perfect for dinner parties or that special occasion.

The kitchen is huge and very well equipped - there's everything you'll need here to cater for your group, including a 4-door Aga and pantry, and for something a bit special, professional catering can be arranged.

The AbbotÂ’s Room, an enormous games room with table tennis, children's snooker table, darts, TV and PlayStation 2 will ensure that there's always plenty to do, even on those not so sunny days.

On the first floor is a library area with window seats and eight bedrooms, four double rooms, one with an en suite bathroom, and two four poster beds, and four twin rooms, one with an en suite shower room.

Outside is a large mature garden where you can play croquet on the lawn, a hard tennis court and climbing frames, slides and swings for the children.

Famous for its annual music festival and tor, the nearby town of Glastonbury has all the amenities you could need, and is well worth a visit.

The beautiful cathedral city of Wells, Wookey Hole Caves and historic Bath, are also within easy reach.

With so much to see and do, Wootton House is sure to be a real hit with all the family.
