  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this lovely house and we will definitely come again."

Some of the beds were not comfortable but overall there were far more good things about the house than bad ones. There was not much in the way of cleaning equipment that we could find- no brush and pan, no long extension for the Henry, but nothing that spoiled the holiday and we’d love to come back when the swimming pond is ready!

  • "A truly great historic family house to host family and friends celebrations."

Our guests loved their stay as did we. It was truly a spectacular week, spent playing games and chatting by roaring log fires in a magnificent setting. A little run down, but all the better for its shabby chic. Making for a comfortable and relaxed country stay in a great part of Somerset. We loved learning about the houses history and family. Having rented houses all over the world this is definately up there with our favourites. Thank you.

  • "A great party house, large enough for 16 Adults."

The facilities and location are great, exceeding expectation. The comfort and particularly the cleanliness left a lot to be desired. There is a difference between being old and quaint and being worn out and dirty for things like mattresses and carpets. I would recommend more zip-link beds for when there are more couples and less children as it gives greater flexibility.

Thank you for your feedback, we are glad to hear you enjoyed the facilities and location. The owner's are in the process of updating the mattresses and the carpets have recently been restored. Property Owner

  • "Lovely large house being renovated so some of it old and faded but somehow this adds to the whole experience."

Priority has been bathrooms which are all lovely but do need to be well cleaned to prevent them deteriorating. Lots of space for large groups, games room, tennis court, climbing frame all great and the gardens are lovely. Kitchen is very well equipped and was fun to use. Mattresses a bit past their sell by date so not particularly comfortable. However we had a great time here and felt lucky to have found the property and thanks to the owners were able to roll over last years booking due to pandemic. Sykes most unhelpful in relation to that. So thanks to the owners and good luck with future renovation.

  • "Great house and garden for big family holiday."

Quiet with lots of space and excellent location. However house needs a DEEP clean-I can cope with many imperfections but marked dust under beds and furniture, mouse dirt in cupboards, filthy windows, shower dysfunction and larger rodents running outside are not what I expect for the weekly charge. It seems incongruous considering the money that has been spent on the wild swimming pool (not accessible to us). Nevertheless would I go back?- Yes John White

Thank you for your feedback which we have discussed in detail with the owner who has advised us that he has since had a meeting with his housekeeping team. With the points raised the changeovers will be supervised. Moving forward this is to ensure that the issues highlighted will not be repeated. Despite your feedback we are pleased you enjoyed the large garden and outdoor space. We hope to welcome you back to the West Country in the near future. Property Owner

  • "This was a lovely period house set in stunning grounds."

The garden was amazing with it's own Tennis court and croquet lawn. The house itself was like stepping into a Jane Austin novel, packed with caracter and period features. The only downside to the property was the cleanliness. The rooms were not cleaned properly and the kitchen looked like it had not been cleaned at all. After a good going over with anti bac wipes and some bleach in the sinks it was fine. It wasn't the start i expected but it didn't spoil the lovely time my family spent here. The WiFi could do with a boost as well.

Wootton House is an old building with lots of character. It is run down in places and needs updating but was ideal for our needs.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We are pleased that you enjoyed staying at Wootton House. As it is a large character property there is always work to do and the owners are invested in keeping the house well maintained. Wootton House is in a beautiful setting in the country with fantastic gardens and tennis court. The children loved the climbing frames and the playroom (you will not need to bring any toys for children!), and the abundance of space on both floors was perfect for a group of such mixed ages. Despite its grandeur the house has a wonderfully warm, cosy feel to it and the facilities are brilliant. We can’t wait to come back next year!

The property exceeded our expectations especially the beautiful grounds the property is situated in. We were a mixed group of 8 adults and 7 children ranging from 1 to 6 years. Only very minor issue was intermittent internet connection but in many ways we didn't really miss this as we were enjoying ourselves so much. We received a friendly welcome upon arrival and property was well appointed.

It is a wonderful house for family gatherings with plenty of space inside, two lounges, a grand piano, large well equipped kitchen and a children's games room. Outside at the back there are extensive lawns for croquet, football, rounders, cricket and a tennis court. The front of the house has lawn and woods at one side for walks and den building. We stayed for a week and only left the house on two occasions because the children were happy playing in the grounds. For a family gathering it cannot be bettered.

  • "Staying at Wootton House was a dream come true - used to visiting National Trust properties we were intrigued to be staying in a house with such a rich history."

We were not disappointed and realty felt we had taken a step back in time ! Some visitors might be put off by the 'frayed edges' but we all agreed they added to the charm and authenticity of the property. What a privilege to stay somewhere with original William Morris wallpaper !! Initially worried about how the youngest children would cope with such a different property, we had unfounded fears. The owners introduction manual made it obvious that this is first and foremost a family home where children are welcome - and judging by the number of toys and games, children are certainly expected :) We particularly liked the kitchen (cooking on an Aga for the first time was a wonderful experience) and the cosy lounge where we had a fire each night whilst taking part in quizzes and parlour games. All family members have been googling to find more info about the Hood family and the history of the house - both the housekeeper and cleaner very kindly shared information freely and it was interesting to hear why certain portraits were hung outside of the main house !!! At every turn there was evidence of those who had lived here in the past - and we really felt we were living 'an experience' rather than taking a holiday. Being able to bring all generations together (including the dogs) was wonderful as we were celebrating a special 50th birthday. Thanks so much for a wonderful time - we'

Well worth the effort though, but try to arrive in daylight. The house was formerly owned by Admiral Sir Alexander Hood and monument to Admiral Samuel Hood, his cousin, can be walked from the house. When you enter the Property you travel back in time by 200 years, which I found very appealing.

It’s much bigger than most weekend rentals, with two sitting rooms, a long dining room, large kitchen and an entrance hall big enough for a party. It is a little tatty in places, but it makes up for it with its unique charm. The housekeeper is welcoming and efficient.

Keys for the window locks should be checked as some did not fit the locks in the bedroom they were located in and some rooms had no keys. The house is a bit tired but the owners indicated they are striving to rectify this. This is not a criticism as we new it needed some TLC. The house was perfect for our reunion and the gardens were splendid. We enjoyed our stay very much.

We assumed that these are not collected so put it in with normal rubbish. A couple of the rooms are cooler than the others so is it worth having some free-standing heaters available to use. We always have two or three people who feel the cold more than others, but we also realise it's an old house and heating is notoriously difficult to get right for everyone.

The property

Wootton House is a superb country house on the edge of the unspoiled hamlet of Butleigh Wootton on the Somerset levels.

Constructed in the 18th cent., this striking house sits on a 1,000 acre estate comprising gardens, woods, parkland and working farms.

The house is comfortable, elegant, and well loved.

You enter through a large front hall with wood floors and oak panelling which leads to the equally impressive back hall with twin pianos; a handsome Steinway grand and an upright.

The house has two reception rooms; a sitting room with a marble fireplace and fine paintings and a lovely drawing room with damask wallpaper, an open fire and French windows to the front garden.

Overlooking the rear garden is a large formal dining room where the long oak dining table sits before an enormous Jacobean-style ornamental fireplace - perfect for dinner parties or that special occasion.

The kitchen is huge and very well equipped - there's everything you'll need here to cater for your group, including a 4-door Aga and pantry, and for something a bit special, professional catering can be arranged.

The Abbot’s Room, an enormous games room with table tennis, children's snooker table, darts, TV and PlayStation 2 will ensure that there's always plenty to do, even on those not so sunny days.

On the first floor is a library area with window seats and eight bedrooms, four double rooms, one with an en suite bathroom, and two four poster beds, and four twin rooms, one with an en suite shower room.

Outside is a large mature garden where you can play croquet on the lawn, a hard tennis court and climbing frames, slides and swings for the children.

Famous for its annual music festival and tor, the nearby town of Glastonbury has all the amenities you could need, and is well worth a visit.

The beautiful cathedral city of Wells, Wookey Hole Caves and historic Bath, are also within easy reach.

With so much to see and do, Wootton House is sure to be a real hit with all the family.
