  • "Pleasant apartment with outdoor space and parking."

Was well positioned to explore Chester using the canal towpath to avoid traffic

  • "The flat is in a quiet location near the canal and a 15-20 minute walk into Chester."

As said in previous reviews, parking is tight but we did manage it (thankfully the people above parked very well and central). The postcode is accurate and the flat easy to find. As also mentioned before, storage is seriously lacking. This could be easily rectified with different bedside units (with drawers) and some shelves in the main bedroom. We managed to cope (two adults and two children) but it wasn't ideal. Kitchen would benefit with some more crockery. There are still some chipped bowls and not enough glasses. The flat was clean but when we arrived there was no clean dish cloth/sponge, only one left by a previous guest which was pretty disgusting. Also, the toothbrush holder was not at all clean. We tried to clean it (in the dishwasher) but it was still disgusting. We left a note so hopefully this has been replaced! Fixing little details like these, and providing better storage, would provide an overall better experience.

  • "We enjoyed our time in the property and it was in a good position being only a short distance to the canal so walking into the city was very easy."

The listing was accurate and everything seem in order and clean, there were only 2 small issues, the lack of storage in the double bedroom (this wasn't much of a problem as we were only staying for the weekend but longer it may have been), and the tight parking space, which may be an issue especially if the renters of the other property have a very large 4 x 4 pick up. we were lucky that a parking space across the road was free.

  • "I wouldn’t describe the property as perfect, as there were several issues regarding maintenance and cleanliness."

1..The bath is slippery and requires non slip bath mat before we could contemplate using shower the suction side could only be described as a health hazard as was the seal on shower door on bath, both had severe mould which took over half an hour to clean before shower could be used it put me off my breakfast! 2..I would have thought non slip mats would be cleaned at each change over as well as shower door seal which does slide off to soak . 3 ..The kitchen bowl also required a good clean we didn’t use that , I purchased dishwasher tablets as there was only 1 tablet left for guest use . 4..There didn’t appear to be a plug for kitchen sink. 5..A decent size set of mugs would be good as the 5 mismatched ones there were are on the small size 6..Although there were 5 dishes again on the small size 2 were badly chipped. 7..There bulb in the wall light over the television needed replacing. 8..The settee although quite comfortable getting off it is a challenge and not an ideal position/ style for more than one person to watch television, 9..Although cushions are on the settee , they need a clean as they are all covered in bits and fluff we didn’t want to use them. 10...The property is described for 4 people .although kitchen / living area & bathroom are ok for size for 2 adults and children ,4 adults would definitely be hard pushed to stay in property because of the limited space in main bedroom, which only has room for bed ,2 small bedside cabinets and a small shelf that is a bit loose. The only wardrobe is in the 2nd bedroom is wobbly, and the doors don’t shut properly, inviting in moths and small insects we ended up taking any clothes out of it and living out of suitcases for the week! Small shelf in this bedroom is also loose. 11..The windows are lockable but there aren’t any keys 12..The guest handbook for disposal of rubbish isn’t clear .. the grey bin is it kept in the courtyard or alley? Previous guests rubbish was still in the bin...there are instructions for recycling but not for when they go out ? 13.. The panel above the front door lock has a 1/4 inch crack in in you can actually see daylight through it ! These above issues could be so easily rectified I hope the owner takes them on board and addresses them for future guests. On the positive side the instructions for finding the property were good ..You have a parking facility and the property is in a good quiet location, Chester town centre is a 15 min stroll along the towpath beware of the cyclists ! Last but not least is the added bonus of a small sunny courtyard with seating.

I would like to thank Jane for this valuable feedback . Some of the mentioned item are already on the list of jobs to do and the others will be attended to asap. I apologise for the inconvenience caused. Most of our feedback is highly positive and as a result of this, we are very well booked at rates that are reasonable. • "Overall a conveniently located and pleasant apartment with one major issue."

There is zero storage in the main bedroom, not even space to put a suitcase by the bed. Ok for a couple because we used the second bedroom for storage and used the one modest sized wardrobe. No drawers or cupboards. If we had travelled with another couple or told we children it would have been impossible. We found the apartment superficially clean but there weee cobwebs in both bedrooms, the lounge and the bathroom where theee spiders were walking across the ceiling. Mouldy bath mat ( which we had to clean before using) and dirty shower. It just needs a really thorough clean. This could be a very nice base for a couple or adults and young kids on a short break. Disappointingly, the kitchen mixer tap spout came free of the mounting while I was washing up. I replaced it and hand-tightened it as I had no tools. Told the agent but not a word in reply, no thanks for pointing it out or my temp fix. I think that is poor customer service. More importantly the fault needs fixing urgently.

We didn’t use the car the whole weekend and there are plenty of pubs and restaurants close by (and Waitrose in easy walking distance). The only problem we had was finding the cottage initially so a little more information on the directions would be useful. The walk into the city along the canal was lovely.

We didn’t need to use any of the extras we brought. Literally just your clothes and food is all that’s needed. Brilliant location and surprising quiet to say how close to the canal and the road being used as a thoroughfare to access it. The courtyard garden was a lovely sun trap with space for seating and chilling. Aldi and Home Bargains a 10/15 minute walk along the canal. 10 minutes in the other direction is a Waitrose and a further 5 to Chester centre with plenty of bars along the way Would definitely book again and hopefully the upstairs apartment too.

  • "This property is ideally located for a stay in Chester."

The area is very quiet, parking is not a problem and with two pubs nearby what could be better. It’s a short 15 minute walk into the city centre along the canal, a 15 minute walk into the centre of Hoole for some local shopping and an easy drive out on the main road. The apartment was very comfortable and clean. The kitchen has plenty of appliances which are straightforward to use, the beds are comfortable and the heating was easy to adjust, something we were very grateful for as the weather was exceptionally cold. We had a great week and would certainly return to this property.

The only problem we found was that lightning in the lounge/diner could be brighter, accepting that our stay was the first week of December. The location of the cottage is ideal for access to the city centre. A mere 15 minute stroll along the nearby canal bank.

The flat is clean and well equipped and the bed was comfy. It would be bijou for 4 adults (clothes storage would be pushed for space). The sofa was very squishy and was hard for us creaky oldies to get up from! It’s a nice walk of about 1 mile along the canal to Chester centre and local shops are a 5-10 minute walk one way and Waitrose about the same going the opposite way towards town. Parking on site was convenient. We visited Port Sunlight and, about an hour away, Llandudno. St Winifrede’s shrine at Holywell is interesting and we spent a fortune in the Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet! We had a busy and interesting week.

  • "The moment we walked into the apartment we were impressed by how clean and tidy it was."

It had a very well equipped kitchen, a good size dining table, comfortable leather sofa and a good sized TV. But the main attraction was the location: in a quiet side street just 100m or so from the canal tow path which leads past an excellent Waitrose and several bars before joining City Road and Foregate Street. We could walk into the historic city centre in 15-20 minutes. An ideal place to stay for a short city break.

The area is quiet and the cottage offers a lovely walk into the city beside the canal. It also has the added bonus of having parking but also is a short walk from the railway station. It offers everything needed for a city break and I highly recommend it.

Also good to find that things like washing up liquid and toilet rolls had been provided. Beds were very comfortable. Bedrooms were a little small leading to minimal storage but this was manageable. Outside patio was cool in the evening (we were there during recent heatwave) so able to sit out and eat. Unlike other reviews didn’t find position of sofa an issue, neither did we feel the location was an issue. We found the area quite quiet, despite significant roadworks literally on doorstep, and locals friendly and helpful. Canal at end of road and Waitrose is easy 5 min walk to the left along towpath ( or similar drive along main road), with city centre a further 10 mins walk away. Choice of canal side pubs and eateries also within 5 min walk. All things considered Sykes Cottage was ideal for our short break and I can highly recommend.

A 10 minute walk up the canal and you are in the town. Waitrose is about five minute walk away which was handy too. It was very quiet at night, a bonus so near to the town. Could not fault it. We are a couple so it was an ideal size for us, don’t think I would want to share it with more than two but we like a bedroom each so it was perfect. The property has a private parking space always a must and had everything we could need. The beds were comfortable too which isn’t always the case in a lot of rentals. We have used Sykes and rental properties for holidays for some time and would rate this at the top of the list. Many thanks.

The beds were comfortable - plenty of hot water and heating when required. The outside area is useful and a suntrap. The apartment was a short walk away 10 - 15 minutes from the city center along the canal. There is limited clothes storage in one of the bedrooms - something to think about. The off street parking was great to have and there was generally additional parking outside within 3 or 4 minutes walk.

The cottage was clean and well equipped with two big exceptions, the corner settee was very uncomfortable and totally misplaced with regards to the TV useless for 4 people viewing. The cottage was not near the centre of Chester walkable if under 50 but not for older people and the surroundings are not "des res ". I am not a snob being from 2 up 2 down in earlier years. The beds were comfy and the decor fresh and welcoming. It is also handy for walking to the centre of Chester and to and from the station. The only difficulty we found was in finding it in the first place, our taxi driver dropped us off at the end of Spital Walk and we spent quite a while trying to locate the right house! It was perfect for our needs, allowing us to explore Chester and get in a lot of walking along the canal system. The only observations would be: 1. add a downlighter over the dining table, as it can be quite a dark spot 2. add blinds to the bedroom windows, as the street light shines in and can make the rooms really light 3. work out some storage for the double bedroom. Not a problem for us, as we only wanted one bedroom and used the second (with single beds) to store our clothes for the few nights we were there. Otherwise: Perfect!

Our only issue was the small main bedroom with its lack of wardrobe space. This bedroom (double bed) only has 2 small bedside cabinets and so we had to hang our clothes in the wardrobe in the twin bedroom. Not really a big issue for a weekend break but could’ve been had we been staying for a week. There is room for a small wardrobe in the large area outside the bedroom door, towards the bathroom. Everything else is perfect for a holiday in Chester, great location and good parking for 1 car.

About the location

CHESTER

Liverpool 17 miles; Manchester 36 miles.

Chester has quite rightly been described as 'the jewel of the North-West of England'. Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the city is that within a very small area there is evidence of every period of history - from the old walls and amphitheatre of Roman times, through medieval churches, Elizabethan timber-framed townhouses and Georgian terraces, to Victorian restorations and 21st century architecture. The city has much to offer the tourist, including excellent shopping in and around the famous Tudor 'Rows' and lovely walks along the Roman Walls, beside the River Dee and through the picturesque Grosvenor Park. Explore Chester's beautiful medieval cathedral, visit Chester Racecourse or spend a day at the world renowned Chester Zoo. Further afield, the stunning Welsh mountains and coastline, the quaint market towns and villages of Cheshire and the Wirral Peninsula with its first class golf courses, are all within easy touring distance, whilst frequent rail services make Liverpool, Manchester and the North Wales coast readily accessible.
