  • "Excellent well equipped cottage and overlooking the river Colne."

Good location for visiting local places of interest including Beth Chatto's Garden in Elmstead and is well worth a visit. The Anchor provided us with great evening meals. Unfortunately, our holiday was cut short due to short notice medical appointments during the second half of the week. But we shall certainly visit again soon. It was such a lovely break.

  • "A lovely spacious cottage ideally situated on the banks of the river Colne."

Rowhedge village offers 2 friendly pubs one of which serves delicious food and a hearty cooked breakfast is available at the Jam Jar cafe. The rear patio garden was fully enclosed and perfect for our dog and the bench in the front garden was the perfect spot for a cuppa in the morning sun watching the wildlife on the river. We loved our stay at Ivy Cottage and would certainly recommend it to family and friends.

It overlooks the river and you can walk along the river in both directions. The cottage is very comfortable and well-equipped with everything you might need and a very generous welcome package is provided. Parking is not next to the cottage, but only a short walk away. We would recommend it for a great stay.

  • "Lovely location, but brochure didn't make it clear that view of river is only from kitchen window."

We stayed local for a few days due to the petrol situation, and the two shops in the village just about had enough provisions for us to cook simple meals. Very pleasant walks along the river in both directions, but it was not possible to walk all the way to Colchester due to a stretch of unsafe pathway.

It was large, clean and had everything you need for a holiday stay. Sitting out the front on the bench watching the world go by was idyllic. Nice welcome pack to. Views were outstanding. Locals very friendly and loved to stop and chat. Don't forget to visit the Anchor pub, a very short stroll away and if you have a doggie there is outside seating overlooking the river to eat, the food was awesome, went there several times. The Albion pub is a Ale lovers delight and they also have seating by the river, the food menu is small though. The Jam Jar was a great place for Lunch. If you walk go up past the pubs to the new development the riverside walk is lovely and also goes up the Roman River.

The back garden is a real sun-trap in the afternoon and fully enclosed so great for the dog. It is worth saying that the information provided does not make it very clear that there is a (30 yard ?) walk from the car parking spaces to the property. The super large double bed in the very large main bedroom is very comfortable indeed and the bathrooms are well set up - the shower in the en-suite is particularly good. The sofas are also very comfortable. The kitchen has everything you will need. We had a wonderful holiday - sorry to have to come away - and we will be back.

Plenty of places to visit within a short car ride. The big pub on the green is dog UNFRIENDLY, but we were allowed to sit on the terrace with the smokers. Food took ages to come and we were the only ones sitting outside as everyone else had had their food and drink had gone. The other pub is dog friendly but doesn't serve food. We ended up buying stuff from the local Co-op and cooking for ourselves. We loved Wivenhoe, lovely walk along front, very pretty. The Black Buoy pub is very dog friendly inside and out, food excellent and not too pricey.

It was a shame that the foot ferry finished operating at the end of October though. We will definitely stay again as my daughter and family live in Witham which is only about a 40 minute drive away. My grandchildren loved coming over especially seeing all the rowing boats out on Remembrance Sunday and there was also a barbecue at the Rowing Club which was next to the cottage. Everybody was very friendly and our dog loved going out along the estuary.
