Such stunning views of the coast and country and the ever changing vista. Beautiful deserted beaches close by. The path leading to Sandwood Bay starts from just along the road. Plenty of short walks to enjoy if the long trek to Sandwood doesn’t appeal! Skipaflotta is certainly ‘Far from the maddening crowds’ and a great place to find peace and rest. With no light pollution, the large velux windows give the opportunity to lay in bed and star gaze and, if you’re lucky (and we were) see the aurora too! Probably one the best holiday properties we have stayed in.

The view from the windows/terrace is great, weather permitting, and the hosts are friendly and helpful when needed, but don't intrude. There are beautiful beaches within a few minutes walk or drive - no need to take the long walk to Sandwood Bay. It takes about 15 minutes to get back to the A838 main road, but Durness and Scourie or Tarbet are quickly reached and there is plenty to do without going so far.

The weather has no bearing on the enjoyment of the place, it is good to be warm and cosy watching the weather fronts come in and out through the huge windows. We walked loads during our stay, doing the headlands this time as we walked to Sandwood Bay the last time. We picked our way over the many paths from one beach or pier to the next and back the road. Fantastic views. We also walked up part of the Old Peat Road, will do more the next time. Stocking up in Ullapool and topping up at the Spar in Kinlochbervie saw us through the week. Thank you and well done Elisabeth and Peter for keeping your high standards in difficult times. Kind regards.

The central heating was very efficient too. Both bedrooms are very pleasant and the double bed was comfortable. There's a nice bathroom upstairs and a practical and efficient shower room with a large radiator (useful for drying damp clothes) downstairs The property is incredibly clean and very well equipped with washing machine, dryer, dishwasher fridge as well as a freezer. • "Skipaflotta was just stunning."

The drive there from the NW England was long and in wintry conditions interesting, but definitely worth all the effort, taking us about 9 hours in all. We arrived in day light and were over the moon with the property , it's look and feel were everything that we had hoped for. Our two children were delighted with the big open plan living area and their smart and cosy bedroom. The views from from the house were amazing and we had to take turns at meals to sit with our backs to the view as everyone wanted a view seat. The house was lovely and modern which meant always a good temperature and a great base to come back to each day. Everything about the house seemed well thought out, with a great entrance porch / utility area to get rid of outdoor clothing etc and space to store our rather copious amounts of stuff! The living are was light and spacious with some great sofas ( especially a round one which rotates which was definitely a hit) . Even the kitchen, which can be a bit of an afterthought in some properties, was well designed and had loads of things which we hadn't expected and made cooking easy. Elisabeth and Peter were charming and thoughtful with regular top up supplies of wood and kindling when needed ( the fire was a luxury rather than a necessity, and certainly added that cosy factor). We had some great days out including walking to sandwood bay which was stunning , remote and wild , a couple of days kayaking and walking around loch Laxford where we saw sea otters , a golden eagle and white tailed sea eagle and lots of seals not to mention all of the other bird life . The bay's nearby are just stunning and an easy if somewhat windy walk from the house or a short drive ( oldshoremore ) . We also made use of The Spice Route takeaway service on one night which was brilliant, and just a short drive to collect ( order a day or so before) . The local Spar in Kinlochbervie was well stocked and although we brought most things would have easily catered for anything we needed. The only down side would have been the broadband connection which was slow ( but remember where this house is and you will see why) but serviceable and was more than combatted by a box of DVDs which we had brought with us and a DVDs player which Peter sorted out for us( a big thank you) . Phone reception as you would expect was poor generally, but great if you wanted to throw you phone in the drawer for the week which we did ! Finally a really big thank you to our hosts for an amazing holiday in a stunning place with such a wonderful property. We will be back

  • "This holiday cottage is beautiful and in a spectacular location, we arrived in pitch black on a freezing November night after a very long drive and the owner met us on arrival and helped unload the car and showed us round the house."

The wood burning stove was lit and the fairy lights were on making it very cosy and inviting. The house and everything in it is pristine and has everything you could possibly need and the owners are very friendly and helpful (not to mention the firewood fairy who kept us constantly topped up with logs for the fire left by they door every day!) plenty wildlife, beaches and walks right on your doorstep! Would love to come back and visit again!

  • "Wonderful holiday, this is just the place if you want to get away from the stress of day to day life."

Amazing place with amazing sea views. Skipaflotta is spotless and we had all we needed. The owners couldn't be nicer, we had access to as many logs for the log burner as we needed. We visited the gorgeous white sand beaches of Polin and Oldshoremore which were our favourites, and so close by. In Durness we visited Smoo cave which is a lovely free attraction with free parking. Just down the road from Smoo cave is Cocoa mountain where the hot chocolate was to die for! We also visited Ullapool where there is a large Tesco and fish and chip shop. The drive to Ullapool was very scenic from the property. We also drove to Tongue from Durness which had lovely mountain views. In the evening we were star gazing from the decked area outside or the upstairs velux windows. Lovely to sit in bed and see the stars, take some binoculars! We would love to visit again.

  • "We, three generations, have just left the cottage where we have all had a lovely time."

The cottage is of a very high spec and we could not find any faults with it. The bedding is lovely. The furnishings are very comfortable and stylish and kept in a colourscheme which compliments the natural colours outside. Everything works well. We were very lucky with the weather which might have flavoured our views, being able to spend whole days on Oldshoremore beach, but we also had one day with torrential rain and gail force winds when we just closed the doors and enjoyed the TV and reading. It is a long drive from the south of England, with minimum 2 stops on the way, but the scenery is just stunning. We found the road via Ullapool easier than the shorter route crossing from Inverness, via Lairg which is a single track road with passing places. The local Spar shop stocks most things required and a Fish Van supplies fresh fish and seafood to the cottage on a Wednesday morning.

  • "We really enjoyed this holiday."

The house is wonderful and beautifully furnished with amazing views of the mountains all around you and the owners who live next door couldn't have been any more helpful. There are incredible beaches nearby and the nearest, Polin beach is walking distance while the others, including the famous Sandwood Bay are just a short distance away. A fish van stops outside the house on Wednesday mornings selling fantastic fish and seafood. We visited Handa Island where you can see Puffins and thousands of other sea birds nesting on the cliffs. The view back to the mainland as you complete your walk is amazing. I would definitely recommend the Shorehouse seafood restaurant, which is situated right next to the jetty in Tarbet from where you take the boat to the island and also the Old School restaurant, which you pass on the main road on your journey from the house to Handa There is a pony trekking centre within walking distance of the house, which my youngest son really enjoyed. Durness is a short drive away, it has a beautiful beach. You should also visit the Cocoa Mountain chocolate factory situated in the Balnakiel craft village and the fascinating Smoo Cave. Best of all is the scenery. A walk or drive in any direction will take your breath away, the view changing constantly as you go. I would particularly recommend the drive along the coast to Ullapool. We can't wait to visit again next year

About the location

KINLOCHBERVIE

Durness 18 miles; Lairg 46 miles; Thurso 89 miles; Inverness 94 miles.

Situated in the far north west of Scotland, Kinlochbervie is the most northerly of all the fishing ports and boasts a large fish handling depot from where catches are dispatched throughout Europe. Because of this the roads in the surrounding area are first class! The area has a stunning rocky coastline which attracts many visitors throughout the year. The village itself has a well-stocked shop, a post office and hotels and restaurant that are open all year round. From here it is easy to access both Oldshoremore Beach and the more famous Sandwood Bay Beach which some claim is the most beautiful beach in Britain!
