If you are seeking a respite from the noise and hurry of city life, the cottage provides that and more. Surrounded by pastures of sheep, cattle, rabbits and the occasional deer and overlooking a beautiful loch, we melted into a rural pace of life during our two week stay. We enjoyed getting to know Iain, whose family owns the cottage. The property is down a single track road and sits on a hill overlooking Greshornish Loch. Two upper bedrooms had closet and dresser space and dormer windows facing the loch. A small but comfortable living room with electric hob kept us cozy during a couple of blustery days. The kitchen with stovetop and oven plus microwave were sufficient for preparing meals in. The single bathroom required some patience from the four of us, but we made it work. We ate dinners 3 nights at the nearby Greshornish Hotel, a half mile walk further up the road. We also enjoyed music nights at the Edinbane Inn — everything from fiddle and pipe tunes to ballads to Eagles songs. The cottage is not fancy and the furnishings are simple. The ceilings upstairs are low and you will need to open and close a gate to get into the yard. But the host and surroundings are worth the minor inconveniences. The cottage is a special place that takes you back to a simpler time and is a good base for exploring the amazing history and geography and culture of Skye.

About the location

DUNVEGAN

Portree 22 miles.

The village of Dunvegan is set in the north west of Skye and contains a mixture of traditional stone and modern houses, along with a selection of shops and hotels. About a mile from the village is Dunvegan Castle, home to the Clan MacLeod, who have continuously occupied the castle since the 13th century. Only four miles away is the famous Three Chimneys Restaurant, a must for all foodies, and just a 10 minute walk away is the very popular Old School Restaurant, also worth a visit. Also in the area are the Cullin Mountains with their fantastic rock forms and pinnacles, which many climbers would put at the top of their list. Other attractions on the Isle are plentiful - visit the Talisker Distillery or Portree, the island’s only town, set around its natural harbour, which boasts an excellent range of shops, hotels and restaurants, and also offers Sea Eagle trips from the pier, which are extremely popular.

This property only accepts a Saturday start date for holidays.
