  • "Fine house in a great position in a lovely area."

Good views direct from the house and garden. Well organised - particularly the kitchen - e.g. cupboards free for guest's supplies, not filled up with host's stuff; and a choice of washing "tools" not just one. (Heating control slightly baffling but worked effectively when set.) Would love to stay again.

Possible to spot a variety of sea birds and even seals directly from the dining room table! Great base for exploring the local lochs, coasts, countryside and hills.

  • "A stunning location, very comfortable and clean house with all amenities we needed."

The house acts like a hide for wildlife being so close to a small river and Loch. From the house we saw Red deer drinking from the small river on the beach, Loads of water based birds fishing and foraging for food amounts the seaweed and we saw a Otter down in Poolewe on the River Ewe. Landscapes around the house and local area is incredible. We Kayaked on Loch Maree instead on Loch Ewe as Loch Ewe has some big currents that we didn’t feel happy about tackling. Highly recommend the Loch Kernasary circular walk make sure to go round the walk clock wise it’s far more spectacular. Owners have been brilliant and been easy to get hold off.

The location with the views over the lake and to the mountains were stunning - we saw so many birds on the lake that we hadn't seen before - Great Northern Diver, Merganzers, Dunlin, Greenshank. Have already recommended this house to friends - and we would definately stay here again.

  • "Nice, geneerally well equiped house in beautiful surroundings."

Very clean and tidy on entry. Excellent heating. Kitchen adequate but very small and not very well arranged. No dishwasher, which mattered more since sink and drainer very awkwardly placed for hand washing up. Owner VERY helpful indeed over e-bike storage -- much appreciated. Three minor failings: 1) only one bathroom in the house situated downstairs but all bedrooms situated upstairs. This should really be made clearer in the description -- and the provision of chamber pots in the bedrooms, old fashioned as it might seem, could be very useful. 2) we were seriously too hot in bed under a duvet which felt both over heavy and needlessly warm. Only on stripping the beds to leave did we discover that the duvet was in fact 2 10 tog duvets one held on top of the other by poppers. If we had known this at the start of the week we could have discarded one duvet and spent more comfortable nights, 3) Parking area is claimed to have room for two cars. It's adequate for one, but two would be very tight indeed. Moreover entry to the parking space is awkward and when arriving from Poolewe requires either reverse entry from a surprisingly busy road or a 300 yard drive to find space to turn round so as to enter the space forwards. Needless to say leaving the parking space onto a band in a single track road only permits departure in one direction and requires a turn-around to go in the other.

Good old-fashioned spacious comfort! Good Wifi and two large TVs. Garden views in three directions, incl. across the loch north to distant mountains and inland towards the Beinn Eighe range. Seabirds on the loch and many birds in the garden, but sadly I didn't see an otter. There is no local pub or restaurant, which might not suit some. The drive is four miles from Poolewe along a single-track road. There's a lovely sandy beach a few miles further along the loch. I'd certainly revisit.

About the location

POOLEWE

Dingwall 50 miles; Ullapool 50 miles.

The pretty village of Poolewe sits in the shelter of Loch Ewe, at the mouth of the River Ewe where it tumbles down from Loch Maree. It is a pretty place in an area of spectacular scenery and is home to a well-stocked shop, small swimming pool and two hotels. The world-renowned Inverewe Garden (National Trust) is half a mile across the bay from the village. The site was developed by the botanist Osgood Mackenzie from 1862 until his death in 1922. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, it is home to exotic plants, imported from all over the world – a must for all visitors to the area. Firemore beach is five miles to the west and north along the coast is Gruinard Bay with its striking sands; a series of attractive beaches skirt the bay and a number are easily reached from the main road. With spectacular scenery, mountains, excellent hillwalking, golf, fishing, wildlife cruises and much more, this is a great area for a holiday!
