“On a positive note the owner was very friendly, the cottage was warm and there is a large garden ideal for children to play in.”

Unfortunately there are quite a few minor negative points which I have told Sykes about, and we are waiting for them to respond. We read the comments from the occupants previous to us about the cobwebs so I went prepared and took a feather duster and cleared them, which we shouldn't have to do. ...

Unfortunately there are quite a few minor negative points which I have told Sykes about, and we are waiting for them to respond. We read the comments from the occupants previous to us about the cobwebs so I went prepared and took a feather duster and cleared them, which we shouldn't have to do. We were 3 families meeting up for a holiday together and the cottage is advertised as having 3 bathrooms, but the 3rd is only a downstairs loo with a tiny tiny washbasin which meant we had to share with another family upstairs. Some carpets are quite stained and one is very frayed across the doorway which is a tripping hazard. Rug curling up at the corners also a trip hazard. Overall the cottage had an air of neglect and requires a spring clean. If the owner is not prepared to bring it up to a good standard I think the rental price should be reduced accordingly.

The property

A beautiful, detached cottage ideally located in the sleepy little village of Monkland and surrounded by unspoilt Herefordshire countryside.

This former Post House offers warm and welcoming accommodation with five delightful bedrooms, including a ground floor twin and a master with en-suite facilities.

Decorated with a charming country theme throughout, with modern and bright accommodation, the well-equipped kitchen has a dining area to seat all guests, with doors leading to the rear patio and pretty garden.

The main sitting room houses a warming woodburning stove, with a second stove set in the relaxing garden room to the rear, both with a TV should you fancy a cosy night in with a film.

The garden room also has double doors, which can be swept open in the summer time to invite inside the warm weather and wonderful scenery.

The extensive, enclosed garden is a lovely place to settle with a refreshing drink or a morning coffee before setting off for your day, and the paddock beyond provides the perfect place for younger guests and four-legged friends to stretch their legs.

The lovely little village of Monkland sits at the start of the Black and White Village Trail and is home to Monkland Cheese Dairy, creating artisan products, which you’re welcome to sample in the farm shop.

After a walk or bike ride through the glorious surrounding countryside, why not stop for a homemade cake or a light bite in the award-winning tea room?

Leominster, just three miles away, is well worth exploring with its ancient buildings and plenty of pubs, shops and cafes, whilst Hereford is just a little further, with its treasured, medieval Mappa Mundi.

A superb holiday cottage in a beautiful part of the country.

About the location

Leominster 3 miles

The charming village of Monkland is the start of the Black & White Village Trail, a 40 mile trail taking in several old English villages with half-timbered buildings, which can be enjoyed by car or bicycle. The village is also home to the Monkland Cheese Dairy, a working dairy producing and selling local, artisan cheeses, as well as offering a well-stocked shop and cafe. Leominster, dating back to the 7th century, possesses some fine examples of architecture including the Priory Church, along with a wide variety of shops, cafes, antique centres and pubs – it’s an ideal place to spend an afternoon. Close by are many National Trust properties including Croft Castle and Berrington Hall, plus the Judge's Lodgings in Presteigne, Stokesay Castle, the renowned Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre and the Acton Scott Historic Working Farm are well worth a visit. Sample Herefordshire's famous cider or discover Hereford with it's fascinating Mappa Mundi world map and the captivating chained library, home to a collection of rare and ancient books. The pretty medieval market town of Ludlow makes a great day out, with more than 500 listed buildings and a magnificent castle, and also within easy reach are Ironbridge and Hay-on-Wye.
