  • "Having pets has necessitated staying in self-catering holiday accommodation for about twenty-five years when not holidaying abroad, but not one of the properties has been in the class of May Cottage which is absolutely superb!"

It certainly has the wow factor in abundance. The cottage is beautifully and tastefully furnished throughout, spotlessly clean, with everything provided that you could possibly need. When I last had towels of the quality of the ones in the cottage it was at a 5* hotel which gives some indication of the quality to be enjoyed. There is ample crockery, cutlery & glasses, and even items for a picnic. Alongside the cottage is a car parking space, which is very unusual in Shanklin, especially so near the centre, and an electric car charging point. If you don’t have a car, the cottage is only about a two or three minute walk from two bus routes, a Londis convenience store, and Shanklin’s Old Village with its thatched tea rooms, shops, restaurants, and pubs. For dog owners, a walk of about three or four minutes leads to Big Mead, a large open park that my dog loved being exercised in and where dogs can exercise without a lead. At the far end is a small pond with ducks, so dogs do need to be kept on a lead in the vicinity of it. The cottage is situated in a small, one way residential road, and although it is so near to the main road through the town it was extremely quiet. On a wall when you enter the cottage you see a large sign with the word ‘Welcome’, which is how you are made to feel, and below it on the table was the most enormous welcome hamper I’ve ever seen and even my dog had a welcome gift. There was even a choice of beds for him to use and food and water bowls. Shortly after our arrival, the owners came to personally welcome us. They live nearby and are very nice people indeed. I am certainly not an easy person to please, but I found absolutely nothing whatsoever to criticise, a great deal to praise, and I am looking forward very much to next year’s stay. In May Cottage.

  • "An extremely well equipped cottage with very pleasant and attentive owners."

It is a cliche that “they have thought of everything “ but in this case they really have. The range of items in our “welcome” pack…more like “welcome table” …was comprehensive and very generous even by Sykes standards and got our holiday off on the right foot from the start. We were recommended for an Italian restaurant nearby, Pavarotti’s , and went twice…do not miss it both for the food and the ambience. The cottage is well situated for a tour of the IOW attractions and it is impossible to find a fault or anything the owners have not thought of and it became a joke with them as we tried to find something…they won. Thoroughly recommended and I would give six stars if I could.

From the welcome goodies to the quality fixtures and fittings, May Cottage had everything that you could ask for. The small courtyard seating area is a sun trap and with free Sky TV and Wi-Fi, you can fill your down time, come rain or shine. Shanklin has lots of takeaways (we recommend The Happy Haddock, The House of Spice and Dragon Pearl). There are also loads of restaurants, pubs and tearooms. You won’t go hungry or thirsty here! There is a convenience store just around the corner, as are the Chine and the Old Village. It’s a 10-minute walk to the main shopping area or 15-minutes down to the seafront. Big Mead park is a 5-minute walk away for those with pooches (with a poo bin at the entrance), and the surrounding streets are safe for a quick evening walk. The IOW has an endless supply of well-marked footpaths for the active, plus many popular visitor attractions as listed on TripAdvisor. The owners, Bob & Jacqui live next door, and are amazing. • "Wow what a fabulous cottage."

We have been holidaying in cottages for many years but you will have to look extremely hard to better this cottage. Close to the shops of Old Shanklin whilst in a quiet residential road with a parking space. The property was beautifully clean with luxurious towels and bedding. Many mod cons, all working well, without detracting from the beauty of a quaint cottage. Extremely well equipped; there really was nothing that wasn't provided. Lots of games provided with a nice mix of traditional and new which we enjoyed, the electronic Yahtzee being our favourite. Non intrusive owners living next door who were very welcoming friendly and willing to impart local knowledge. Dogs were not only welcomed but encouraged; certainly not second class accommodation as happens often when holidaying with dogs - they even got their own welcome pack! Talking of welcome packs well I had read the reviews prior to going but I still couldn't believe the array of delicacies awaiting us. Granddaughter's eyes were agog at the sight of so many favourites which we thoroughly enjoyed throughout the week. Thank you for providing our home from home with fabulous Isle of Wight memories for Nan, Grandad, Granddaughter age 15 and our two West Highland Terriers.

I am really particular about where we stay but this exceeded anywhere we have stayed in before. I was a bit hesitant as I think there was only one review due to it being so new but so glad I took a chance. So well equipped and thought out. The kitchen has everything you need to cook a full dinner if you were so inclined. Husband thought he had found something that they had forgotten but there it was in the utility cupboard, a fan. They noticed that the dog beds would be a bit small for our dogs so another one was bought round. Lovely welcome basket, eggs, butter, orange juice, wine, milk, sure there were other things, as well as a doggy welcome bag for both of the dogs. Cannot think of anything negative. Owners live next door and were very friendly and helpful. There is a park a few minutes walk away for the dogs also just a few minutes walk from Main Street. About the location

SHANKLIN

Sandown 2.2 miles; Godshill 4 miles.

The town of Shanklin on the Isle of Wight is a traditional seaside resort, sitting in a sheltered, sunny bay on the south-east coast of the island. Shanklin and Sandown offer all the right ingredients for a great summer holiday, with long, safe, sandy beaches and loads of family attractions, such as a zoo, pier and fairground, plus shops, restaurants, pubs and clubs. The older part of Shanklin, known as Shanklin Old Village, is set slightly lower than the town, where the road winds between traditional thatched cottages, tea shops and charming gardens and parks. Explore Shanklin Chine, a dramatic gorge with a waterfall tumbling through lush plants and mossy boulders. At the top of the cliff is the bustling High Street of shops and the grand Victorian theatre, at the bottom there are cafes, shops and amusements along the suntrap esplanade and sandy beach. Shanklin is great starting point for numerous coastal and inland walks (with the option to return using the local bus network). The rest of the island, including Sandown, Godshill, Blackgang Chine and The Needles, is all easily accessible.
