  • "We stayed for 5 weeks whilst a house purchase was finalising."

A super location, just across the road from the beach, with wonderful walks on the adjacent sea path to Deal in one direction & Kingsdown in the other. Not many locations where you get two castles on your doorstep, but you do at La Plage! Inside is well equipped, comfortable & very clean. The property manager was available when needed & very supportive. The view from the upstairs front window is quite something. The cottage is pet friendly & Bert the Lab also really enjoyed his stay by the beach. A good selection of local shops, pubs & restaurants are close by.

Watching the world go by from the upstairs seating area was very relaxing and the rear garden catches the afternoon sun. Really no issues at all but if I was going to be super picky, I would say it could do with a light refresh of the decor and the next size up of TV.

Have stayed here two times before. On all occasions have noticed distinct smell of urine near right hand sofa on entertaining house,Could be sofa or rug/ carpet. Did point this out before booking and assistant said it had been sorted.. Hasn't been unfortunately... Also, shower curtain is too long, easy to trip on it. The cottage is in a great position being across the road from the sea.

Dear Jill, Your comment about an unpleasant smell greatly surprises us. We stayed at the house for a week directly after you and didn't detect anything. In general, our pet-owners are very responsible and the incident you refer to took place at the end of July 2021. Our professional cleaning company thoroughly cleaned the area in question and since then the house has been occupied multiple times and no one has indicated that there was a smell. We take your comment very seriously and so will of course ask the cleaning company to double-check this area . Property Owner

  • "Great location, very clean and a lovely stay."

The only criticism would be the dated decor and the sofa comfort and layout. They are quite dated and uncomfortable, and it’s a bit of a strain to see the telly from one sofa while we sat as a family to watch a film in the evening.

We're so glad you enjoyed your stay by the sea. You will be pleased to hear that some decorating has been scheduled to take place over the winter. The house does not have a 'modern' interior but is cosy and decorated with an 'old fashioned' style. The focal point of the sitting room is the fireplace. As can be seen on the photos, the layout of the property makes it difficult to focus the furniture around the television but guests are welcome to swing one of the sofas round to face the television if required. One sofa is quite firm as it is a quality Parker Knowles. We will check on the comfort of the second sofa in a few weeks when we will be having a holiday in the house ourselves. We're sorry you did not find it comfortable. We take all feedback seriously and endeavour to improve on the facilities wherever possible. Property Owner

Dear Kevin and Ang, Thank you for taking the trouble to write a lovely review. We're so glad that you had an enjoyable holiday and appreciated the cottage. Just to clarify for future holidaymakers:- the bus stop is not immediately outside the front door (with noisy buses stopping and starting) but across the road and to the left by the green, opposite a general store. It is indeed very easy to get to Canterbury by bus as well as by car with the option "park and ride" from just outside the city. Property Owner

  • "The house was beautifully clean - and perfectly situated by the beach."

Fab view from the upstairs front window. Parking for both our cars was easy and free - we always managed to find a space opposite the house. The back garden is secure and dog friendly, if you do not fancy crossing the road and taking advantage of the open grass spaces. Easy walks into Deal and to Walmer castle. Amazing number of cups, mugs. plenty of glasses, cutlery and cooking utensils. The only negative factor is the rather lame shower.

Thank you for your review. We're delighted that you appreciated the house and the area. We're grateful that you've flagged up an issue with the shower which we will now address. Property Owner

  • "Overall we enjoyed our stay at La Plage, it was clean & tidy in a lovely location."

As other reviews have mentioned we spent most of our time at the house sitting in the window of the bedroom watching the world go by. Good to download one of the shipping traffic apps so you can identify any passing ships, visibility permitting! (we only had two clear days). Walmer and Deal are very nice for a wander around but don't expect any sandy beaches which seem to be rare in this part of the world, shingle all the way, tough going! There were a few downsides that took the shine off a little. It could really do with a bigger TV. The yard could use a spruce up, it's rather depressing in it's current state. We weren't fans of the mattresses (but understand everyone is different!) so spent most of the week playing musical beds! The shower holder/bracket/thingy is useless and needs attention. The road at the front is incredibly busy (though very few lorries thankfully), obviously not something the owner can do anything about but just pointing it out.

Thank you for your feedback. We will follow up on your comments where possible. We're glad you enjoyed your stay overall. Activity in the Channel is certainly a source of interest. On a clear day you can see right across to France. There are sandy beaches at Broadstairs (17km) and Sandwich (8km). You can even hire bikes just along the promenade by the Sea Scouts Hut and cycle to the medieval town of Sandwich on National Cycle Network Route 1, past the golf course and Bird Observatory. Super clean, which is not always the case with properties that allow dogs. The kitchen was small but well equippped. The house was in a brilliant location for us, in walking distance from both Kingsdown and Deal, right on the seafront for dog walks and with good takeaways also in walking distance. Not to mention the people and dog friendly pub a few doors down. We had a lovely time thank you. The quilt on one of the single beds was poor quality and warmth compared to the other so maybe this could be replaced.

  • "This cottage is brilliantly located for exploring Kent."

It is comfortable but generally a bit worn and dated. Whilst decor is clearly subjective and a matter of opinion, some of the furniture was very worn. We found that we had most of what we needed for a two-week stay with a family of four, with one or two things notably absent (for example, having a washing machine was great, but there was no airer, just an outside washing line, and it rained most days, so drying clothing was challenging!). We had some difficulties with the front door lock that necessitated a locksmith being called out, and Sykes, Colin (who looks after the cottage) and the local neighbours couldn't have been friendlier and more helpful, which was much appreciated. Walmer and Deal are gorgeous, there is lots to do in the area and the cottage is brilliantly located for swimming, cycling and walking, and we had a very enjoyable stay. It does feel like the cottage has the potential to be so much more than it is currently.

Thank you for your fair appraisal of our seaside cottage. During the pandemic we have been unable to travel to travel to the property, however upon arrival in the UK only recently we have found that some of the furniture is indeed in need of review. We, and our management team, are actively addressing these issues and taking into account your suggestions. Some of the furniture has already been replaced. We will be providing a portable clothes airer and for larger quantities of drying during rainy periods the local launderette with its tumble dryers is just a little further along the Strand. • "The cottage is in a lovely position and very clean and lovely outlook from upstairs , but you are in the middle of a building site with works going on both sides."

With scaffolding front and back. The court yard is full of building debris and so is the front door so you have to be careful, you of your dog doesn’t get hit. So quite impossible to enjoy your morning coffee in the sun . Having to disappear all day to escape the noise. Would love to return when both sides have finished but it’s been a long time and and they tell me quite a few months left . So if some peace and quite and no one looking in your bedroom and bathroom window in the morning is what your looking for don’t book it until it’s all over .

Thank you for your positive appraisal of the merits of our holiday cottage. We are very sorry indeed that your holiday was so disrupted by building work on the roof of the next door property. We had been informed that the project would have been at an end before your arrival but unfortunately, as can sometimes happen, the job went over time and it was not in our control to do anything about it. The yard had been properly prepared and clean for your arrival so any debris coming down was the responsibility of the roofing firm and to be regretted. Luckily, the job will be finished in the next few days and the scaffolding brought down. Any potential disruption from the property on the other side will also be at an end within a few weeks and that scaffolding will also be removed. We can understand how this must have impacted on the enjoyment of your stay and apologise wholeheartedly. We do hope you may be able to return in the future to enjoy the cottage when all is back to normal. Property Owner

Just loved La Plage and after over 50 years of visiting Deal (and surrounding areas) this has been the most comfortable, cosy, clean and well equipped accommodation I have stayed in to date. The view from the bedroom window was wonderful. The weather wasn't brilliant - to be expected at this time of year - but we saw a couple of beautiful sunrises and weather ranged from hot & sunny to gale force winds and rain. My great grandson spent many hours happily scootering along the prom or dodging the waves whatever the weather - sunny and serene or dark and dramatic. The local residents are very friendly and helpful. We walked, or used local buses (to visit places of interest in Walmer, Deal, Dover, Folkestone and Sandwich) and found it easy to get around and - icing on the cake - the restaurant at the end of the pier is open again! Had a lovely holiday and are looking forward to our next stay at La Plage.

  • "Dismal and dark cottage."

Smells musty, due to old and dusty soft furnishings. A few small containers of milk were rank. No pegs, no laundry basket. I don't think that La Plague has been touched for the last twenty years, the paint work is yellowish. Signs of damp and cracks in plasterwork. This cottage does not deserve a 3 star rating by Sykes, 1 would be more appropriate. Finally, we felt we were being watched, as building at end of yard was owners garage, with glass doors looking in to the yard.

We are sorry that our holiday cottage did not meet with your expectations. La Plage receives the sun at the front of the property in the morning and at the back of the property including the yard in the afternoon and evening. The property is thoroughly cleaned and checked by a professional company on a regular basis after each booking. At the end of the main season indepth cleaning is undertaken and any paintwork is redone as necessary. The choice of paint colour is a warm cream. The owner lives next door and is always available during your stay should there be any issues which need addressing. We are sorry you did not find a laundry basket or pegs, we will make sure this is evident in the future. There is an annexe to the owner's garage which backs on to the yard and is used for long term storage. Access to this storage area is from the garage side and not the yard. The windows are boarded up and there is no possibility of someone loitering in this space so we are sorry if you got the impression that someone might have been there. The visitors' book and repeat bookings are testament to the fact that many people are very satisfied with what La Plage has to offer and yours are the first comments of this nature that we have received but we will of course follow them up and pass them on to our management company. Good rail and bus links which enabled us to do linear walks and return on public transport with a tired dog. A few hundred yards further is the beach where you can dip in the sea or watch boats racing from the sailing club.

Children, pets or elderly people can easily and safely use the pedestrian promenade and cycle track which are well away from the road, and go into Deal town centre or wander the other way to Kingsdown in complete tranquillity.

Young children will also enjoy the paddling pool, 5 minutes' walk away at the other end of the green.

La Plage is well located on a bus route with two nice pubs within 3 minute's walk.

There are several food shops within a 1-minute walk and a wine shop 2 doors away!

The Strand has many other interesting shops as you walk towards Deal, where you will find a wealth of pubs, restaurants, cafes, quirky independent shops, and quaint narrow streets to explore.
