  • "Nice looking property in a quiet area."

It looks good from the first look, but you start to see this place needs some TLC. Coat hanger was falling off wall, dodgy looking finish to a socket in the kitchen, dishwasher clearly needs some maintenance as it was dirty from last customers with vegetables floating around in what smelt like stagnant water! Was NOT impressed that this was overlooked. Couple of plates in cupboard were dirty, TV remote does not work downstairs - was disappointed this hadn't been replaced since last review. Ended up using the remote from upstairs to turn TV off! Wish we'd spotted this earlier. Wood flooring in lounge hasn't been fitted properly and in areas it's not lying flat, this could be painful if someone were to catch their foot on it. Sofa is fine but definitely not for 4 adults. Fan in bathroom is turned off, we found out why - the fan doesn't go off! Bath is way too deep for a shower - avoid if you have some sort of mobility issues. Shower has no power to it, so if you have long/thick hair be prepared to be in there for ages washing out the shampoo! We'd have preferred some sort of welcome pack - not everyone has mobile phones and sometimes it's just a more personal touch. Positives: good location for Canterbury and the coast, thank you for the biscuits, tea, coffee and milk on arrival - much appreciated. Loved the fact we had our own TVs in both bedrooms - this was a nice touch, and to have two double beds.

  • "House is wider than expected, great size bedrooms, very soft bedding and nice deep bath, shower isn’t great but think it just needs new head."

Downstairs, the front room is difficult to comfortably sit 4 people as sofa is very small and showing signs of aging (sunken seats), tv remote didn’t work and multiple buttons were broken, we brought our own firestick to watch as the Netflix wouldn’t load on tv. Kitchen is well equipped and has everything you need. House is quite dark due to location and ventilation is an issue, it got very very hot and the heating had a mind of its own of when it would come on, had to message owners as micro power cuts shut off the boiler and we couldn’t find the reset for the thermostat but they were very quick with a response. Would work for a couple but wouldn’t recommend for family as the living space is just too small. A welcome book with a little how to for the boiler, washing machine and dishwasher would be helpful. Lovely location, very quiet, great walks around the countryside.

House was clean, decorated and finished nicely, with great attention to detail. Thank you for a lovely stay.

The accommodation was comfortable and allowed the 4 adults to enjoy our time at the venue. Seating in the lounge was tight for 4 adults but we managed fine. We also cooked some meals maybe a folder could be added to centralise all details for the stay- this is common in other similar places we have stayed.

  • "Upon arriving at the property we were greeted with a notice on the hallway wall saying " All pets may only go in the kitchen or garden"."

We were least to say horrified as upon the time of booking this was not stated anywhere in the details. We would never have booked this property if we had known prior to booking. We have a large dog and it was in no way means safe to have him in the kitchen with his bed whilst we were trying to cook and even just make a hot drink. The kitchen is small and the floor area is only the size if a single bed. We did make a complaint upon our return and the details have been slightly adjusted. The property was clean and comfortable but there was a hole in the back door and had been covered by a fluffy draught excluder. Also the laminate flooring in the lounge has lifted and could prove dangerous if it carries on to lift more.

  • "We enjoyed our stay the cottage was cosy."

There was a musky smell when we entered the cottage and it would be there whenever we came back from being out for a period of time. It seemed to be coming from the downstairs cupboard. The only other thing which surprised us was the cottage was advertised as dog friendly but a notice on the wall stated that they had to stay in the kitchen and garden. There is a child gate on the door way into the kitchen to keep the dog in. Luckily our dog is small but it was still difficult cooking whilst trying to avoid our dog. We can understand not allowing our dog on the furniture or upstairs but having to keep him confined in one small room is not being that dog friendly. Also it would have been nice to be able to lock the toilet and bathroom doors for privacy.

  • "Much to commend about this cottage."

Modern, clean, downstairs cloakroom a great bonus. There are some aspects, however, which need attention. When we arrived at 3.30, the owner was trying to fix a broken basin plug. Thought this was unusual as he had 5 hours since the previous visitors left. Unable to do so, we had no plug to the bathroom basin for the duration of our stay. To make it worse, the downstairs basin was also without a plug. Try washing without a plug! Why did he not nip to B and Q and spend a quid getting 2 plastic plugs for temporary use??!! There is also the issue of the bathroom extract fan which operates 24/7 and cannot be switched off! It is not linked to the light, shower, or door. The constant noise is very distracting and can be heard all over the cottage at night. Fortunately we were not using the bedroom next door to the bathroom. There were no instructions for refuse collection arrangements. Finally, there was no leaflets re surrounding attractions. I know some agencies limit this on the grounds of Covid contamination, but it is not completely necessary. Simply get two sets of 4-6 appropriate leaflets from the Tourist Information Centre, and change them between bookings. The virus dies after 72 hours, so they will remain perfectly safe. Sorry if this comes over as overly negative, but we felt that this lovely cottage was not being marketed and maintained to its full potential.

Thank for your feedback. Regrettably the plugs could not be attended to while the previous guests were in the property or remedied on changeover day due to timescales while extra cleaning is needed during the current situation. The plug replacements however are being resolved and apologies if you had to use the shower or bath taps for washing during your stay. The current guidance from Sykes is also to remove leaflets or literature that are classed as high density touch points and this has been done for the safety of guests. I will see if your suggestion can be implemented in the future however I feel that with information becoming outdated quickly during the covid situation regarding what local establishments are open and closed, that is is better and more accurate for guests to check online pre arrival for up to date information regarding the areas they wish to vist. For any help with advice regarding information needed for refuse collection, appliances etc, my contact number is at the property and am more than happy to provide any necessary information that guests may need, if they contact me. Apologies if the bathroom fan inconvenienced you and I'm glad you found the cottage lovely. Property Owner

  • "The cottage was advertised by Sykes as 'dog friendly' and we accept that this means keep dogs off furniture, etc."

So we were very annoyed to find a notice in the cottage saying 'all pets may only go in the kitchen or gardens'. The rear garden which we were expected to put the dog in was dirty and had not been swept.

Thank for your feedback, moving forward we will remove the note as we appreciate that guests would prefer their pets to be able to go in the lounge. Outside areas are swept weekly and apologies if any debris had landed during windy weather before your arrival. Property Owner

  • "Good location, easy to find."

Cottage was clean and very well equipped with good quality kitchen items. We had booked for my husband and I, and our adult son but in the end only my son and I travelled. We found the accomodation very good for 2 people but maybe a bit small for the advertised 4. A good base for the beach and many walks - we particularly enjoyed Reculver Park to Herne Bay walk. Our one disappointment was that we had searched for a cottage that welcomed pets and had an enclosed garden. However we found that our (well behaved) dog was only allowed in the kitchen which is quite small, and there has no door just a stair gate, and the 'enclosed garden' was fenced but it was more decorative than functional. Otherwise very happy, we would certainly return - but would leave the dog behind to save his, and our stress.

Thank for your feedback and we are pleased you found the cottage clean with quality items. Moving forward we will allow pets in the lounge area as we appreciate that guests would prefer their pets to be able to be in the lounge with our guests. The front courtyard has a hedgerow and the rear courtyard is fenced. We will ensure that all third party adverts for Sykes specify that the areas are courtyards to match the Sykes advert and as per the pictures on the advert. We feel that the pictures regarding the size of the property and outside areas are an accurate reflection regarding size. There is also plenty of green space and woods nearby for dog walking and we very much hope to see you and your pet again in the future. Property Owner

Cottage is well situated for coast. country and city. We did however have a couple of problems due to my husbands mobility (Parkinson's) in that there is not a hand rail on the stairs and that the side of the bath is very high preventing him from getting in the bath for a bath or a shower.
