  • "So disappointed."

At first glance this seemed a pretty and nicely decorated apartment but it was infested with fleas as we gradually realised as our bites became more and more numerous and we found and caught fleas hopping about the carpets in every room. We have had no satisfactory response after raising our concerns.

  • "Access to the apartment is clumsy and lengthy, through a garden gate, down concrete steps, up a metal staircase through a coded door, up an internal staircase, through an external door to an outside walkway to the apartment door."

Street parking, if available is 75 yards away, nearer parking is double yellow-lined. We found the description of access very misleading, and only sent details at last minute. Clearly deliberate. There was little comfort to be had in this apartment. The sofas were the type of thing you would get in student accomodation. Cheap, hard and worn. Kitchen areas greasy, artificial flowers festooned with cobwebs. One toilet dysfunctional, does not flush properly.Curtains behind bed difficult to reach and use. This bedroom visible from upstairs walkway. Kitchen equipment I'll thought out. Lack of suitable bowls for cereal, deserts. Only four noodle bowls. Enclosed balcony and decor creates dark room and electric plugs very sparse. This apartment is not worth the fee charged.

  • "Lovely position overlooking the sea, but very much let down for me by the 4 flights of stairs (2 flights on an open fire escape outside the building and 2 internal staircases up to flat."

) There were 32 steps in total and I struggled to safely move my elderly westies up the stairs and down 3 or 4 times a day for going out and toiletting them morning and evening. Poor lighting on the staircases didn't help either. Internally, you had to go up more steps to get to light switch to light up the staircase for the steps to go down. Ridiculous. And the automatic light on the bottom external staircase only came on within a couple of steps of the bottom, so most of the stairase was unlit There was only one photo of steps on website showing a stone staircase at the front of the building, of about 6 steps, which I had thought was the steps to the flat. It was not made clear how awkward the steps were to use. My holiday was spoiled by both my dogs stumbling and falling on both sets of steps, meaning we had to carry them both up and down for their safety for most of the week, and probably put our own safety at risk by doing so. Very disappointing accommodation for us. Spoiled our days out and our holiday.

COR-274374-CF. In addition I missed mentioning the following: Parking was difficult outside the front of the flats, although there was no charge. On arrival the road was fully parked, but fortunately while we wondered what to do someone further along the road moved. It was quite an operation transferring things around to the back of the property and 2 floors up the fire escape type open staircase to the entrance door. The road was regularly fully parked, so the owners of Flat 1 helpfully advised of other suitable parking availability. We did enjoy our week around the area and a few good meals out.

The hosts have been super responsive, helpful and flexible which I truly appreciate. The apartment was superbly decorated and furnished. I think it will be worthy to warn future guests that there are other owners that have dogs in the compound. It will also be helpful to provide an empty bins for recyclable items in the apartment to ease garbage sorting.

The owner was contacted at once. Her response was to say that she had sent an e-mail to my home computer that morning explaining the situation, this would not have helped as I was obviously unable to read any such messages. As there were just the two of us and there was a toilet in the en-suite we agreed to stay the owner made no offer of compensating us for the inconvenience."Sykes" obviously does not do enough to ensure that the properties in it's listings are maintained to a high enough standard. On returning home I checked my e-mails and found that the message she had sent began "Good evening" which suggests that she sent the message after wehad rung her and not as she had stated. • "Littlestone is a charming, quiet seaside town with a great beach and lots to do in the surrounding area."

It's fantastic for dogs as there is only a small extent of the beach that is not dog friendly all the year round and plenty of good walks nearby. There are good eating places within walking distance or a short drive away and all were dog friendly outside. Watch for the amazing Mr Whippy selling Reynolds Ice Cream on The Green. Yum! It's worth the queue for one of his specials. Littlestone Beach Apartment is beautifully appointed with everything you could want for a comfortable self catering stay and it is so restful and peaceful, being on a quiet stretch of road and directly on the seafront with a wonderful calming view from the enclosed balcony. The apartment was spotlessly clean and had a friendly, homely feel. Parking in the road outside was easy when we were there. The access via the rear staircase might be tricky for the less able. The beach is perfect for children and dogs- a mixture of shingle and sand and a short walk from the apartment across the Green which is just over the road outside. We had a wonderful week despite some inclement weather and came home really well rested. We strongly recommend.

About the location

GREATSTONE-ON-SEA

Dungeness 2.5 miles; Romney Marsh 4 miles; Lydd 5 miles; Camber Sands 8 miles; Folkestone 16 miles; Dover 25 miles.

Greatstone-on-Sea is a coastal village sandwiched between Littlestone and Dungeness. Part of the historic Kent coast-line, Greatstone has long been a popular haunt for those who love the sea, sand and all that it brings with it. The sandy beach at Greatstone is quite flat and stretches from south to north for over two miles, and is frequently 'washed' by the tide of the English Channel. Greatstone beach has long drawn holidaymakers from far and wide. It provides safe sea bathing in the haven of Romney Bay so is a perfect place for families with young children and with miles of fine sand you can build all the castles you want! However it is due to the sea breezes along the beach in Greatstone, together with the flat sandy beach without break-waters, that makes the beach popular with a whole range of sports that use the wind. You will find kite surfers on the sea and kite flying, kite boarding, kite buggys and land yachting and horse-riders on the beach. Greatstone is said to be one of the finest land yachting sites in the UK. Wind-surfing and sailing are also prevalent along the coastline, so if sea, sand or sail sit high on your holiday list, look no further. Greatstone is also a perfect place to have a vacation if you like walking, cycling, birdwatching or just enjoying nature. Greatstone Lakes are located in the Dungeness National Nature Reserve and are located to the west of the village. There are two large lakes nearby offering a beautiful water-based wildlife habitat, covering an area of approximately 25 acres, attracting birds, fauna and flora. The area around the lakes is especially popular with walkers, bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts alike. While exploring this part of Kent why not take some time to visit Dungeness where locally-caught fresh fish can be bought. Said to offer "perfect light" and where artists galleries are scattered between the lighthouse and the narrow gauge railway line, which is operated by the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway. So much to offer and so much to see, Greatstone has been a holiday gem in a hidden crown and now can show itself in all it's glory.
